The following anecdote is told of Ma-! t hows, the actor : The great comedian sat opposite to a gentleman on one occasion, at dinner, who, after using his tooth pick, laid it the side of his plate; on seeing which, his next neighbor took it up aud did the same., Mathews was horrified, and said quietly': . 'I beg pardon, but do you know you are using that gentleman's tooth pick?" "Oh, yes," was the reply; and in a few minutes repeated the same trick. Mathews was1 now unable to contain himself, and shouted at the tip of his voice: "Sir, do you know you are using that gentleman's- tooth pfek ?f: 'Well, sir, suppose I am; I mean to give it back to him," was the reply of the offon led citizen'. njsjjT Have the courage to aeknowl erlge jour iige to' a day, and to cptnparc it with tlit- avefsige life of man. Vt- Dixeny the may editorof the Setd pe, dissects the dietic qualities of a por ker as readily as he slashes into the anat omy of diseased humanity. Either the doctor 13 right, or Moses of old i wrong. "The wisdom of the jewish law which prohibits the use of pork wili soqn be ac knowledged by all rational beings. That swine are afflicted with scrofula and tubercles, we have repeatedly shown, and every killer of hogs knows it ; the indi gestibility of the flesh ia acknowledged, and if people were enlightened, the hog would only be raised for his fat alone. This is available in all cases iustead of whale and other fish oils a few ex cepted of the finer kinds for eating. Mutton and beef, if our farmers ever become enlightened, may profitably take the plat e of the hog, and would add great ly to the health and dignity of the far mer s household. Hog husbandry is debasing. The influence of pork-eating on the farmer is degrading. Good husbandry would furnish other fats for the farmer, to say nothing of butter, which the present catalogue of grasses, cereals, and enlightened irrigation, fur nish in abundance. If and we ein.nlir.i ically aver it a correct criterion the ma terial and getting up of the family meal classificsjth oecupint of the household among rational and intellectual beings. then we say that those on whose table pork is most Treqiiently found are the least intelligent and most irroveHin;; iu their views. We know distinctly, the full bearings fo what .v ttc.c,4n.dj precisely now- it will be received, nor do .we care a far thing for the anathemas that will be hurl ed at ns for the assertion. What mo tive remains for his elevation, if human being is. taught to look no higher than to such a repast for the nourishment of the body, and to the nearest priest for the welfare of his soul ? Observe the farmer, such as we have often seen- him at the family meal ay, as you may now find him all over our country, with his salt hog, potatoes and sour rye bread, and his miserable husbandry, and a thousand excuses for not raising sheep; protecting and feeding bis cattle, aud chanjiing and cultivating bis fowls and seed aud attendinor carefully to a good vegetable garden. You need but small search for his pig-pen his fowl bam yard, his vfhigkey bottle and his tobacco-box, or his nauseous pipe. He will largely defend his favorite luxuries ; the hog is hisgrand excniplarof maimers aud phys iologies, his omnivcrous animal labrato ry that converts the products of his farm into the great stnplc pork. Poor Sir Walter Raleigh ! we have often shed a tear for your sad fate : but our wicked faBcy has often pictured yc making an offering to the devil of a hog stuffed with toliaCCO. Hie devils, we think, selected a very appropriate lodgement when they besought the baviour to send them unto the hogs 5 it is a great pity that the en tire family of swine were not comprised by that sam: two thousand." Washino Calicoes. The following method of washing dresses or printed muslins, so as to preserve the colors is recommended by competent authority. The dress should be washed in lather, and not in the usual way, by applying the soap direct upon the muslin. Make a lathur by boiling some toap and wa ter together'; ahaiet'it stand until it' is sufficiently cool for uso. Previously to putting the dress into it, throwing in a handful at salt. Uiose the dress with out wringing it, in clear, cold water, in to which a little salt has been thrown. Remove it and rinse it again in a fresh supply of clear, cold water and salt. Then wring the dress in a cloth and hang it to dry immediately, spreading it out as open as possible, so as to pre vent any part lying over another. Should there be any white in the pat tern, mix a little blue in the water. Cold Bedrooms. A person accus tomed to undress in a room without a fire and to seek repose in a cold bed, will not experience the least inconven ience, even in the severest weather. The natural heat of his body will very speedily render him even more comfort ably warm than the individual who sleeps in a heated apartment, and in a bed thus artificially warmed, and who will be extremely liable to a sensation of chilliness as soon as the artificial heat is dissipated. Washing Yindovs. The nicest ar ticle for washing windows is deer skin, as no particles come off to adhere to the glass and make it look like as if washed with feathers.
