CIVIL AND RELIGIOUS PERSECUTION IN FRANCE. [From the New York Herald.] A difficulty has arisen in France. It Lj a new difficulty, and one which a few weeks ago we were scarody prepared to expect. When Marshal ilacllahon came into power be said that with the help of God and the French army, he hoped to be alJe to maintain "moral order" it was a much discussed question at the time The difficulty to which we refer goes far to explain the President's puraic, m weu as to illustrate tae epini -wiac.i animates the majority of the French Assembly. Some time about the middle of Jnne M. Broussea. member cl the Assembly for the AoIm, died, and, of course, had to be buried. M lirousses was not a member of say religious denomination. He was not a Churchman, ior a dissenter, but rather a Voltsrisn, as such peor.le are commonly caded ia trance, isj his own direction this man was buried without any religious ceremo nial. In other words, bis burial ia what is called a civil burisl. Ac cording to a very stupid rule which till has force in France, the corpse of any member of the Assembly has to be attended to the grave with a guard of soldiers. On this occasion - toe officers in command, finding that there was no religious ceremonial, abruptly and very unceremoniously left the cortege, taking, of courec, their command with thetn. Fierce citijen indignation was the result. Indignation took it more alarming shspe when it was known that M. Ducro. Prefect cf Lyons, had issued an order that funerals celebrated without clerical aid should take-place at 7 o'clock in the morning in winter aid at or before 6 o'clock in tie mnrnlmr in cammer. What gives intensity to the feeling which still prevails is the tact that the wording of the order reads almost like an ex tract from the decrees of the Council which followed on the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. . . . ; I . It was supposed mere migiii te some mistake, and the whole matter wss brought before the Assembly at Versailles.' All over France the Vol tarians or non-clericals felt insulted, and it was hoped that the Assembly might redress the wrcng or the 'Jov ornment ofUtT some . satisfactory ex planation. What was the result? The Minister of War, General de Barrail, defended the course taken by tie offi cers at the funeral of M. lirousses, and justified the order of the Prefect of Lyons. The Minister of War was loudly cheered by the Rigtit; the Left Centre showed signs of sympa thy witfa the Govenment, and M. Ducro's crder at Lyons was sustain ed by a vote of 413 to 251. We have little to do with the arguments on I of the Government side. The greet is that the French Assembly, as the French Assembly is at present com posed, has decreed that a non phris tianisa sort of a dog;, who oagbtto be Iftrried out of eight and iiuried in darkness. ' M. Thiets. it ia aid, was with difficulty re-strained from going down to the Assembly ; and when he heard what the Assembly had done he declared it to be his pur pose, notwithstanding the oatward respect that he had always shown the Church,-to hare it putia his will that bis own funeral should be of a civil, not of a religious LcL This may mean "moral order according to MacMahon and the Assembly, but to us it seems persecution which must bring about revenge. Of this funeral and of this order wo shall bear more by and by. Wrings of this sort are not easily forgotten or forgiven ; and we may rest assured that Gambetta and his friendc, al thouch silent are biding theit time 3' CAUGHT IN THEIR OWN TRAP. A-conple o( California convicts re cently quite cut-witted themselves in planning -a ingenious escape from jail. They managed to store them selves in a large box in the j wheel wright shop where they worked, and had tho box nailed and so arranged that when they arrived in Saa Fran cisco, and wera landed on th4 wharf, . they .could open one end and crawl out Unfortunately for theni, when the box came on the boat, one of the deck bands turned it up on end in stead, of leaving it flat. This was more than the convicts could stand, one of them stood on hi Lead, and the rush of blood was more 'than he had bargained for, while the other criod out :this box don't stand right' The deck hand was as tonished at this exclamation,' and his first idea was that ghosts were on board. A council was held, and the captain decided to break open the box.. To the utter astonishment of ev erybody, as soon as the iie were broken off, two live men came creep ing out in a state, of perspiration. They were at once recognized as convicts and were at once sent back to the prison. J Th Vic or thbAgb, A lively sermon on the "Vice oi the Age" was preached in St. Louis recently bv Rev. Dr. Holland, of that t'lty, and in the course of his rerairks he said "The middle classes em-nd tl.tir income in keepifig up false appearan ces.
