THE COMPROMISE JUGGLE "FLIP A COPPER" AND DONE WITH IT. In another part ef this paper we give the Compromise measure reported by the conference cemtuittee of both Hou ses of Congress. Compromises are u-u ally lemporieiiigexpedUnts which cure notl iug, settle not bin, but merely con sent that a thing shall be without r' tablishing its righteousness, or chang ing the convictions of thoi-e who make it, in regard to the rights involved. .'The proposed compromise U the Te ry weakest and wickedest, because the most mischievous, of any that has ever beeu resorted to bridge a difficulty or delude a people. First, because it is an admission that the Constitution is a cnature of Con gresx, and may be tampered with at will, or be tet aside at pleaure, whet ever one party or the oilier cees fit to raise a disturbance because it has not legally obtained control of the Genera! Government. Second, because, if Congrew can set aside, at will, one provisiou of the Con stitutiou, it can, at will, set a:de any other provision, or the entire Coustitu lion. And instead of ha viug a govern ment of stability, we will have one like Reuben, "uu table as water, thou shall not excel,'" aud for the wtue reasou begotten by the constitution, by it will the constitution be defiled, should Con :r ps adopt the bill reported. Third because it in a direct, flagrant and ui justifiable tio'ution of the Con Ktitntiou, iriHsmnch as it practicnlly amends or sets aside a portion of it. con trary to the provisions of Article V., which says: Congress, whenever tw-t thirds of both H"Uses nhnll deem it necessary iDnlicatiou of the!- i.latnres .f t wo liirl of the several State, shall call a 7iall propose amendrntiits; or on the j ... rt-ne .! .it be vlid to i Hji iutt-ntsamt purposes. k prt of the Constitution, when ratified by the L-g ot three toiirtnsoi tne several SttiS. or bv Cotiventioi.s in three fourths thereof, as the one or the other' mode of la tllcaf'ou may be proposed j ,.y fjonKress." Fourth. because it v a violation of the j )eU. r fp;rir BUj iIltet. f the scoi d , caU9e f g tion one Article II of the j I 'No Senator or Representative, or holdine office of tiustor nrofll. i Constitution, which deel res that uiit'er the Uniled States, shall b up pointed au Elector." , It appoints both Senators and Rep reseatatives to perforin duties esseu tially the same a those of the Elector They are, by the clause quoted, estop ped from belngeleetors uud as such vo ting for President, because theij are Senators and Representatives; yet, b this compromise proposition, they are constituted a Board to judge returns which, by their offices, they are disqnaL ifled from having anything to do with mtkiog. There is only one provisiou (ee Art. XIL,) which permits them to te or judge the matter, in eaee of a failure on the par- of the people to elect, when the House.asthe Represen tative of the People, votes for and elects the Presi. lent; and the Senate votes for aud elects the Vice President as its presiding offlm-r. They aet separately not together. Tfo provision is made for the two Houses acting together in this matter, either as a whole or ptrfs of a whole. This same clause effectually puts a quietus u..ou the claim that the Congress shall count the votes. How absurd is the proposition that they may do collecticely what they are disqualliti d from doing individually. Even iu the case of failure to elect, they do not lo this, but decide the matter by a di rect vote by States. ' : But the worst feature of the propo ition is that it destroys the reverence and respect so far maintained for the Constitution because of a belief in its inviolability, and s'allishes a preee deut dangerous alike to the government mid the people. It constitutes Congress poweraoovetue uoiiyuiunon insreao f under it. Aud instead of Cot gr-ss reiuiiuiiig the servant of the people, will become, bv the adaption of this otu promise, the people's master. We intend to cut loose from it as soon as possible, it lutlf our friends 111 the country get mad; and iu the future we won't give two yeara' time on any thing eolec'ahle. We enn't stand it, uor can any business men. We last week cut off over one h uud red uaiuea from our subscriptions, of those who were indented for two years' subscrip tion, ($4 00) aud we will continue to drop ou such as do not pay at least at the expiration of' the year, in future. We must pay for everything we get and use in cash, and within CO days, aud we CHimof give long credit, to our pat rons, and exhaust our little capital for the fun of prii ting a newspaper. We are vry thankful and glad to have persons subscribe for the Democrat. ui to advertise and give us their j.ib work, but we consider tlmt to all we give value received, and those who think oihi rwise bad better not deal with us. Those lio d. al with us do so of thei- own tree will aiitt accord, and we ex pect theiu to be as prompt in their payments Hs we are 111 de'ivcrit.g the goods. Business is business and our business is not different from any other business Ples bear this iu mind. Kenton Democrat. Your head is level, David mighty l-vel; and though viiu are a Deiu Democrat, we admire your posish on toe fliihiiciiil conduct of a printing shop. Like yourself we have 'cut off a large list, and will do so some more when occasion requires. When we can get a few more "rooral roosters" to see the tbirg iu it proper light, we tuny eXct to luike the business prof itnble, but not till then. Too many publishers liat gon to the charity idea, and cure too lit le about makirg their papers wtTty of support. Hence they nccept py wheu thy get it, aud iu ry j shape it comes, whether iu rotten dead wood at double the price they would pay for a solid article in cash, or in '.diips or whetstones' that they would be better without. TLere is no reatoo .why this should be any more so cf the printing business than any other; but every reason why it should not. The printer psys for his -stock as the nier chant pays for bis and should do busi ness on tlie same general principles. No merchant would sell his goods where he expect no pay.
