THE ' PERRYSBURG JOURNAL;
Dr.i.v Soitndixos. It is known that ven
dee p soundings were made by ihe north Pa
cific ( xpediiiun, 13 y a new contrivance, in
vented by Lieu tenn nt Hiooke, the. lead was
carried down 1,700 fathoms nearly 2 miles,
and four goose-quills full of the bottom
brought up. Insects of the extietnost little
ness were found in the sand, which showed
that they had bven alive, until the enormous
pressure under which they had their b. ing
was removed. Many think ihi to bt a dis
covery, of no special consequence; but it
was precisely by means of such that Lieut.
Maury demonstrated 1 lie possibility of lay
ing the submarine telegraph to England.
The delicacy of the insects which wer'
drawn up showed that there was no ennvnt
across tho line of the te.egrapaio cable to
disturb its posit ion.
