Scientific, Agricultural, Mechanical. J. AUSTIN SCOTT, Editor. Fast Homm Agriculturally Conoldcrcd. In nil oar horae Ulk unit writing, we liv pollen .liap.ragingW of tli.it claw of borne tha only merit of which m, lbt they are merely ft. Theo guulcggy pidertht eta Uu nolliing but run, re bout m u.wkas in the world u those fancy venllemen in flaehy TeiU.whogeoorally attend them in tbeir airing. Aim we nam uu rew mjmuj with the gambling attendant upon tl meel Iniriof tui clM of men and hornet upon the turf. We have never atended alien a UMtinir. and have no deaire to. Thua much for our ditcUimtr. Of l.ifl. auite a reaoeoUble portion of the agricultural prewi, and many of the nuwa and literary pupera, nave ouinw mvwm -t" trial of Deed" at agricultural faira, which the aaf i onlr horde tacin, under another name. Well, it it hard to ay jul where we paia the line of healthful rivalry, when once ma enter the oath of oompeiitioa. Mr. Smith an l Mr. Jone both compete for the beat ten lba. of butter. Mrs. Jones doe her best, but Mra. Smith doe a liule better, by her upe nor drxurity with the akimiujr or the ladle, .n,l aha win. Here is a woman race, with all of it rivalriea, ixjtcUlions and disap n..iulmenta. on a smill scale. Almost every body ay it is right ; we shall not dispute with them. CUilt has a Suffjlk pig, be be lieves iu Suffolk. Wh te b a liyfield, he believes in ByfiVld. (Jnik set out to see which will m ike the best porker in n given time. Oae tries the jugglery or ground ana cooked feed, the oilier the mystery of steam ed potatoes and corn in the ear. Oue beat, of course, and th oilier thinks he cheated. Hire is a hog race. Judge B. and Uen. C. .being troubled with pletnoric puree and am bitious braiua, go to K igUud or Timbuctoo, and each buy another olf, which is educat ed and brought up far more carsfully than those who cad thtm ftthur, and at a proper ti.ne inhibited for the big prize. Here is a bull race a sleportuiu advance of the oth er. Cuarley hu a nice filley, with thin, slop ping shoulder, lunf bip.and such a gold walk er , be would like to see the ng tint could out-walk his filly. Charley is ridiug to town, and Jim cooks' up on the same erntnd, an:J having leiinRtTllie stite of Charity's mind, accomodates him to a w.ilk with his sorrel for a quarter of a mile ; the stakes are the good opinion of each boy for his nig. Olmr- lev lose Nobodv ever thought that w is a race : well, imy bo it wasn't. At the coun ty fair, had Jolin a Morgan and Will had a Ueltounder : Bl inding gun, inr jtnges couu not tall which wusbest.nud as one or the oth er hid to be best, the in Iges Bard, "Iel's see them move." John tro:ted, and Will trot ted, John t;o'.ted f.ister, and Will fasler.JoIio trotted as fast as he could, and Will trotted as fist as he could, and they both trotted a? fast as thi-r could, and kept 0.1 trotting ; an 1 the people gathered about, and each one of the live llio.isand made up his or hermin 1 which horse th'iy would rather have, and so did the iud 'es. and the trottin ' w 13 over. And then sj.ua folks thought they begin to smell ahorse race! and some foik? have a very nice and discriminating sonss of smell. Our olfactories are not that sharp. But enough of this pleasantry. We are willing to tike a more serious view of the subject. Oae o'jector says, " Fast horses are not an agricultural necessity, nor even an agricultural product. No pr.ic ieal firmer need be told that the rearing and training of such horses is at utter variance with agricul tural success. Fast horse flesh has no prac tical value since the introduction of railroads and telegraphs." That is what a young gen tleman wrote of the late exhibition of tha U 8. Ag. Society at Phil tdclpliia. Is it an "airricultuial necessity" to raise fifty bushels of wheat to the acre, and so get fifty dollars instead of fifteen dollars for your crop t Is a two thousand pound bullock an "agricultural product ?" Let us abolish these Railroads, so that the beeves we send to Gotham will get nice and tough as in former Tears, by a four weeks travel on loot, Do cause thesd New Yoikers are getting better teaks than they deserve, and our cattle feed ers are getting too much money. Let in have a moral reform society, and petition the Lfg islature to pass an Act, forbiding any f irmer to raise a colt that can trot faster than a mi'.e in fifteen minute, or that shall be worth over fifty dollars at four years old, because "fast borse tlesli has n practical value njw, and five bundled d llnr colt is " not an agrtcu! tural pioJuct." O.i (Jeorge! It mty do to talk that way in in Sleepy Hollow, but the very Quakers of Ohio would laugh at you for telling such stuff out here. You should have seen French Joseph put his Black Hawk around the ring at 1WeUnd.and r mends VVilliam.and James fad Thomaa, and Johu, and lots of others among tl.e fastest and most successful 00m petitors. D you say Ethan Allen is notag ricultural product? and our champion Black Hawk 1 lying Cloud T Highlander T Mon arch ? Hassan ? Kennebec ? You never sat m the buggy with Heber of Lancaster, after his black mare, or brown of lrumoull 1 Iter his grey, or rode through the 01k openings y the Darby witn r ullington beside his Uor gan stallion, chasing cattle. Take a seat with onr larmer rriena alordiecai i-.ee, 01 stark after his r ly, and when the wind begins to whistle in your ears, ask Mordecai what h will take for the mare, and see how quietly be will tell you she is not lor sale ; and alter a little more such experience learn some good hard horse sense, and confess tint the raising of such stock is not "at utter vniance with agricultural success." We can hardly bring our pen to write se riously on this subject, after all. Life is all but a race of one kind or another, mid the beat advice we have to have to give, is, not to run against each other's su'keys, or leap ditches bo wide that you will sliek in the mid dle. Don't get out of breath, ant don't fret. So e will all come to the eud of the race in good order. Ohio Oultiontor. pi on tin a of of tl I Camdli Wicks. The wicks of tallow candles that require no snulling, are made in a peculiar manner. One thread of t e wick is first impregnated with subnitrale of bis muth ground up in oil, and the strand is bound round with this thread spirally. The several strands one, two 01 three are then spirally wound round a very thin wire, which is placed in the centre of the inuld, and the tallow is poured iu : when coll, the rod in withdrawn. On burning such cun lie the wicks uncurl and form so m ny separate flames, while their ends comii g in contact with the air at the ede of the ffuna are con sumed. Any plan, however, by which tin wicks ean be made to uncurl during conibus tion, will obviate the necessity of using snuf fers : sucb wicks, however.are liable to nmk. eandles gutter, or, to use a common upm ion, "run." Ex. Cheap Electrical Machine. MsssRt. Editors : In making'some exper with eleotricity, and not being able to procure the necessary apparatus such as are generally used I found that by a combina tion of the principles of the Leyden jar and electrophorus I could 00 s'rvct an electric machine cheaper, simpler, more compact, so. Take a piece of indU rubber or gutla perch, sixteen inches square, cover it on both sides wiih tin foil, in the manner of construc ting a Leyden lar ; this I call a Leyden nte ! place it on a table or ot'itr suitable place, and put another piece of india rubber the top of the first, rather larger than the foil. Next place a circular piece of tin or other metal witn an insulating handle on the uppermot piece of ind; rubber, and connect slip of tin foil with tha surface of th tin foil oil the upper side of the Ltyden plate, and double it over sj that when the circular l'iece tin i placed on it plaea it will come in eontact with it. By exciting th npper piece india rubber with a piece of fur, and then putting the tin plate on it, a (park will pass from the npper surface of the leyden plate ro I'h the slip of tin foil to tha tin plate, which, on being raised by Its insulating handle, will give a spark like a common elee trophorus. This being repeated several times, the electricity is literally pump .'d out of the upper surface of the leyden plate. On mak ing connection with the bands or otherwise with the tin plate and the under surface of the leyden plate, a shock will be received in nower according to the siie of the machine. This is a brief description of the method of constructing a new eleotric machine, vo. Machines constructed on this plan, and ot materials like those mentioned, combining simplicity, compactness, and durability, would be suitable instruments to introduce into com mon schools. Sritntiific Amir. J tlil A How to grow Cabbages in a Dry Season. I linre often licnrd it said that to have good cabbages, you must get n Dutch womnn lo hoe them. rVs I hfiva a drop of Celtic blood in my veins, mtr faith in the Irish is too stronz to believe 111 tit rut or bis Ju ly could not hoe cabbages as well as tbe plodding lutch : hence I cave my poor tenant some of my best pliints and sweet corn for seed. 1 he result w,is, lie plowed and narrowed Ins lot, Bet out Iih plants lute but well : but as a friend from the Emerald Ilecamu and claim ed that hospitality which Pat never refuses tl e orn w.is not plurted, but in the place of it he had a monster crop of May weed, de noting tha richness of the soil as well as the quality of the limmt. Judy, although she t id bring the bottle, from uncle's shop and tike a sup out of it )t Pat should get tipsy, tended the cibbv;e3 after a fashion, but they only grew up a hire masi of lenvej refusing to lv ad. But that which shakes my faith in the aforesaid adage, is, that every one ot my cabbages from the same plant bed.nnd plant ed on the snmc tied of chy soil headed well,' even better than ever bt-far, and I nm more Welsh and Irif li than dcufi-he. To h ive cabbages head well, the plants should be string nnd set early, and l.o-id of ten in dry weather. To set out plants late in the season, to prevent the heal from cratk- ing b) over-growth, i3 a great fallacy ; when the bead is lull an 1 liable to crack, break the large roots by b -n ling the cabbage on one side. All l uo planted cabbages h ive failed this season from the effects of drougV, while the early planted were never bet er. I often have to reflect ho w long-sitflerfna. nature is, waen her seasons have to bear the blame of so many short crops. Ohio Cultivator. Chromatic Poitj Prixtino. This is a mode of printing lex ile fabrics by the chem ical action of light. The anthor, fcfr. ft Smith, of Lin Ion, prjpj'ei to employ this cnemical action or agency in dyeing or stain ing textile fabrics, initead of the present mode the cloth, whether wool, silk, tlax, or cotton, being tint steep id in a suitable solu tion, then dried in the dark, and subsequent ly expxed lo the action of the light, those patterns which are to lorra the' pattern being protected by pieces of darkened paper, or some other proper material, attached to a i ol glass. When the desired etlecb 16 produced, the time for which varies from two to twenty minutes, according to the nature of the process, the fab r is has to be removed, in or'er to undergo a fixing operation, whilst a tresn portion ot it is exposed to the light. This is all easily effected by the use of very simple mechanical arrangement, so that anumoer ol pnotigrapnio engines may be placed side by side and operated at once. E.vuravino sr Light. The process of en graving by light and electricity appears now to be fully established. Soon after the dis covery of photography, it was thought that if it could be applied to assist the engraver in transferring pictures to plates, to be engrav ed, an important object would be obtained. Many men of science, and art sU, devoted thenuelves lo accomplish .hU end, and amongst tlid most success lul in this held ol research, has been the eminent N. Niepce de St. Vic tor of Paris. Another distinguished person age is H irr Paul Preisch, of Vienna, who seems to have attained the whole end desir ed. The impressions from the photogalvan ographic plates exhibit a tint much superior to mezzotmto or aquatinto, wliil-t, whatever touches appear in iriiure, are reproduced at the printing press with a fidelity which no ar tistic labor can rival, and which, iu many cases, tue numan nana would never en grave.
