Scientific, Agricultural Mechanical. J. AUSTIN SCOTT, Editor. THE WEATHER. Th lsl Autumn was a oharming one weather iu delightful the roads una sally goood. and nerer In finer condition. The people enjoyed exoelluot health, and a remarkable flow of spirit. A mild winter and open winter at the west, era universally predioted iron the Alman ack Maker teemed to hsimoniss with tie multitude in regard to the weather, when lo and behold in November the winter set In, In earnest, it commenced raining and free ing at the same time producing iee and covering the arth with it cold mantle. Then a light snow succeeded, and the cold became intense, and continued with little or no abatement until the very last days of January, when suddenly it became Mild, at evening the sleighing, was delightful ; but when the morning came the aaow bad disappeared, and we were permit ted once more to look upon old mother earth. .' The weather continued mild, and even summerlike for several days with a (oft warm brecie from the south. On the night of the 4th of February, there was rain,' frcd'tig again ; when the morning of the 6th Came the ena arose with unwonted sp'endor, sn I iis soft, and cheerirg rsys fi 11 upon th.- ice covered treeiand shrubs prodicingoneof the lovliest semes I have ever witntsied, at the same time l.eaiing a rumb ing in lb. heavens like distent thunder and turning my . aye towards the nest, what ws my astuuish ' menl o i beholding adark heavy thur.d r c oud from whence came lightning and thunder which would have done no discredit to a hot - summers day. The scene altogether, was on of .the most splendid I have ever beheld combining both the sublime and beautiful. 1 was led to wonde r in aslonisbmi nt 1 1 the beautiful panorama before roe, and excltim, can all this be chance ? No No it was indeed the handy work of the great Creator, and 1 was led to look through nature up tjca'arcs God. ; With a few days exception the weather ha been mild during the month of February There was another thunderstorm on the 14th, altogether the month just cloicd, hat b en one of the mildest I have known for the last twenty years. Usually February, hits been our coldest month during the year; but this is a changing world, and the Prophets of the present duy, are no profit to themselves or any body else. Many farmers have employed the golden opportunity of ploughing their sward ground during the lAit-munth. It becomes a!l good formers to plough while they can during the present month, all who have grass land to plow for corn the coming season, should not delay ; but improve the first opportunity to do it. Spring is upon us and there are many cares, and anxieties attending our business as agri culturist. March is the time to put our fences in good repair, remi ruber this brother farmers and be ubout it, new manure too should be put on the ground you are to plant, If any of your neighbors do not take the Amulet lend them yours so that they may read these gentle hints ; but the better plan would be to take it Tor themselves, and they will readily se the necessity of supporting so good a paper, one that take so deep an interest in their profession. Brother farn-ers f Lucas, and Wood county you cannot afford to do without it. Original. The Manmee Valley. Intelligent observers have remarked that the Maumee Valley, including Wood Cunnly, is lb garden spot of Ohio. The country being generally level, the crops have suffered in wet seasons. The summer of 1854 was dry, and consequently large crops were raised, while high prices afforded farmers a handsome remuneration and prompted them to occupy . asncb greater breadth of land the following season. In the fore part of the season, corn and other crops promised well, but the rain came in torrents and lasted long, submerging many farmers and almost totally destroying their hitherto promising crops. The God who . sent the rain, followed it by a most favorable season for ditching tho land, and the people : wisely improved it. Wood county occupies , the noble position of having dug more ditches ' iu one yeai than was ever before done by a . single county. It is estimated that not less than 800 mile more made during the past year. There haa been much arxitty to see the risa," and the " rise " has come. The ditch as have movi d off the water with astonishing speed, and the expectations of our farmers bare been more than realised. A FEW SUGGESTIONS. Some, if not mo it of the ditches, ahoulJ be deepened. This will keep the water below the surface, which is very necessary. If dit .hes were deepened in the middle, instead of being It ft flat on the bottom, it would wear out the otnter and leave lets water standing in them. Would it not be a good plan to sink most of the ditches in the cenler from six to twslve inches ? Whea ditch is to be advertised, great care Sould bs taken to include those lands which its construction will benefit. A straight line is generally followed, and the land on the iniile of the line heavily taxed, though it may receive bat lilt.' bene.fi from the ditch, while a piics ( land cornering on the Bamj, but otuside of the line, though being moat benlfited i 'ot These lands should be remembered in deap . aning or laying oat dkches. . In running dkches; swales should be fol lowed, units to do a would require too Pat a angle. It la not advisable to rub' a ti lo through high ridges, as the banks are liable slide under the action of the frost. Before the ditch is ran, learn how much territory is to be drained. Middle ditches are often made twice as large as neeessary, whioh make the (mall amount of land benefited thereby pay an unnecessary tax. All ditches should be made dnep. Better aaka them narrower and deeper. A SUBSCRIBER. Wood County, March 1857. BOW TO MASS NlAOABA FlLLS UscTDt, AS WILL as BiACVirvL I lately hear. Apple and Piab Cuttings, wa observe in our European exchanges, that the German Nurserymen have discovered a method by which to strike apple and pear cuttings. In early sprint? tney select a piece ol around with a northern aspect; make a couple of drills nine inches apart, and about three deep; then select cuttings of strong wood of last year's growth, and from one two feet in length the latter sua is the best; have the thick end cut smooth, press it into the soil in one cf the drills, btnil over the small or terminal point of the cuti n, and insert it m tin- o:her drill leaving a strong bud at the huh. st part of ihe bow; tann all up, w.th the exception of the upper bud; this will swell and throw up leaves, soon form roots, and sometimes three or four of the other buds will do the same ; they can be divided in the following fall or spring. Tiiis rathod is worthy the attention of our horticulturists, nnd can be easily tested during tne next season. Mrs. Partington's Last.
