part of the fractured bono was driven some inches

Ohio State Fair.
The State Fair will be held nt Dayton on the 10th
11th, 12th and 13th of September. The Hoard
have decided to hold two fairs successively nt each
point hereafter. J. II. Klippart, Corresponding

"Brethren, Let Us Drill."
When the news of the repulse at Manassas reach
Camp Meeting at Desplaines, III., Uov. Henry Cox,
the large hearted pastor of Wabash Avenue M. E.
Church who was preaching nt the time the intelli
gence was received remarked, on closing his ser
mon, " Brethren, wo had better adjourn this camp
meeting and go home and drill."
Trouble with the Seneca Mutual.
Tho Tiffin Tribune says considerable excitement
prevailed in that city, in consequence of the new
assessment made by Geo. Knupp, Receiver of the
Rcncca Mutual Insurance Co. Many of tho people
are assessed for largo amounts, and some who
years igo took up their premium notes and hold the
company's receipts. It is believed there is "sumc
thing rotten in Denmark," and the ntlair will be in
vestigated. An advisory meeting was called for
Friday evening last to consider the matter.
Wool for the English Market.
It is stated that English agents are purchasing

What is an Ambulance.
An ambulance is a light carriage, the body being
mounted upon tw o wheels and supported by very
light, clastic springs. It is a little over six feet in
length. There are cots for two inside, with beds,
head pillows, ic. Tho top is ovvral with black

Col. Steedman's Regiment.
This regiment had an enthusiastic reception horn
last week ; the men being generally in very good
condition. This regiment, it will be remembered,
was in two engagements ; the one at I'hilippi and
one at Curricle Ford. Of the four killed, two lost
their lives by the carelessness of their men. Elev
en were wounded in all, two badly. The wounded
were brought limii", together with seven others
sick with Cover. A military hospital was nt once
established, on tho arrival of the regiment, nnd
under the kind treatment of the citizens of Toledo,
tho invalids arc fast recovering.
The Crops.
Our f.irmji's are now reaching that period w hen
they can tn ik.' s tfe calculations upon tin ir crops.
Corn is generally said to be very goo 1 in nppear
auca. The lata hot weather has brought it forward
rapidly, au 1 it promises well. Potatoes look much
better than ustial. Some, of the earliest varieties
begin to conw to market. Th i apple prospect is
very poor. Pears arc but lUile better. Soma va
rieties ara entirely gone. Of tho Hartlett there will
be scarcely enough to bless our eyes, leave ulone
tho satisfying of tho appetite. Of peaches, with
ono or two exceptions there are none worth speak
ing of. Tho s.ima may bo said of cherries and
quinces.
What Gen. Fremont Thinks.
A gentleman who conversed with Gen. Fremont
at Columbus last week, called on us a day or tw o
since. He says tho General is remarkably pleasant
in his conversation, and expresses his sentiments
freely. In speaking of tho recent defeat nt Cull
Run, he gave it as his opinion that the effect on the
Union troops would be such us to causo them to
rally with redouble I zeal around the stars and
stripes. He thought our loss, considering the cir
cumstances, was very small. Ha believed the war
would be brought to a speedy termination, and said
ho "ho did not seo how it could have any other ro
Bult than the perpotuity of tho Union."
The Way to Stop a Paper.
An exebango well says "if you wish to stop your
pnper pay for it in full to the time you ceasa taking
it, as au honest man should do. Don't go sneaking
to the post master and tell him to send your pnper
back "refused," but send your bill ; Uepoiit the
money with the postmaster and tell him to forward
it or go the office of publication yourself, and pay
your honest dues like a man. Somo people com
plain that they cannot stop a paper that they have
once subscribed for, but there is no difficulty if they
take the right way. Pay up all you owe and if tho
paper is continued contrary to your orders, you nro
not liable for it. Don't undertake to cheat the
priuter out of his dues, whether it bo ten cents or
ten dollars."

able, not to prove fatal wo ever heard tell of. The
ball took etl'ect in tho right hip, aui passed com
pletely through and out of tho opposite side, touch

The wound is now doing well, and shows a ready
disposition to heal up. During the uttack Col. N.
wore a blou se, to conceal bis rank, an 1 this was
ornamented by a number of shots, evidently aimed
at his person. After tho battle, Col, Norton, with
the other wounded, was taken into the rebel camp,
where he was stripped to cxamiue tho nature of bis
wound and during this examination some one car

furnished him. Uj thinks he will bo able to be up

he proposes to raisa another regiment and " off Ut

Letter from a Virginian.
CAMP POCATAHLICO, July 19, 1861.
Mr. J W. It Aii.sr : Your Wood county boys are
here, and we thank God for it. They have been in
the Kanawha Valley six days, and have cheered up
the Union causo In Western Virginia. AsaYii
ginian for tho Union, it has been my good fortune to
become acquainted with some of your boys. On
the 2ith day of May last, I was assailed by a guer
rilla band of secessionists, with cocked rifles pre
sented at mi, the cap glistering on tho tube, the
finger on the trigger, and with the most horrid o.uhs,
they said they would blow my heart out of the
wrong side of ma if I attempt d to plow Southern
soil; that no man with five-soil or not (hern pri ici
ples should plow deft". Davis' soil. I, as you would
suppose, took the only alternative, nnd led for Ohio,
the " land of the free and the honu of the brave."
Scarcely conscious of my course, 1 came to Galli
ixifis, where I found your regim nit, ha I an intro
duction to Chi. Norton, whose sympathy nn.l m inly
treatment of me and my countrymen in the same
condition, has placed us under a debt of gratitude
we can never repay or find words to express. 1
have been more or less with your boys ever since 1
was with them on the 4th of July, when they m ide
a rush UMn Ripley, tho County seat of Jickson
county, Va. They made a gallant descent on the
town in double quick time t surrounded the place,
but to their utter astonishment their game vvas
gone. Spies gave them timely notice of danircr.
and they went in such a hurry, 'that they hit their
breakfast on the tables in the "court house. Altera
close examination of the place, they unfurled the
stars nnd stripes from the lolly spue of the court
house: and may they wave in the Ineeze of the Old
Dominion as n 'memento of the gallant sons of Ohio
ns well ns to the Union of a common country. On
this expedition your boys sign disced themselves
with a nobleness of soul commonly unknown in
warfare. Thev were often seen to nlmost weep
when cheered by the matrons of exiled sons and
husbands, which occurrence was comm. in. They
appear to be made of tiie best materials of nature.
They have, as by instinct, every qiulilicalion that
is necessary for the station they are tilling, with a
full appreciation of what is right, and a strong re
sentment against all wrongs. I have followed them
on this expedition to capture Charleston, the main
seat of the rebel army in Western Virginia. They
arc camped within li miles of Charleston and l'j
miL s of the main foi tress, which is two miles be
low Chaileston. 1 must now digress for a few
lines to give you an explanation of the cause of my
having to leave my family in the mountains of
irgiuia. The seecssiouiit calls me a Southern
man ilh Northern principles. So lar is truth.
Thev also say 1 urn an Abolitionist, which is abso
lutely false, so far as I understand the t M m. 1 am
for leaving nil the races in tho world in the bi.okof
fate where they are placed, nnd, claiming to be of
the anglo-saxon or European race, 1 think more of
that race than of nil the other races on the face of
the earth. 1 am against the extension of slave ter
ritory or slave labor, vv here it conies in competition
with white labor or the interests of the while rare,
l am a Virginian by birth, have been raised in Vir
ginia, have never claimed citizenship in any other
State: it being the place of my forefathers' graves.
But living in that portion of Virginia whose prox
imity to Ohio nnd her sister Free Slates, the lights
of their arts and science havo shone upon us; they
have sent the spelling book with ils instructor
among us : they have' sent their steam mills to
grind us our bread : they have shown us the equal
ity of society, nnd have' let us seo that we have an
equal right with our aristocratic brethren. And
now, we of Western Virginia bound by these fra
ternal bonds of biotiierhoi d to our sister State of
Ohio ; with the love of a ooinni ni country, our in
terests are inseparable. Yet the " rulers,'" as they
term themselves, have transferred us to Jell". Davis,
from whom we look to your generous chivalry to
interpose to keep us from being swallowed up in
this great Southern vortex. While 1 am writing
I am amidst your boys. They appear to be intent
on sweeping s 'cession from the face of the earth,
whilst thev, joking in nil the gay vivacity of youth,
innocent in their diversions, ma'nly in th.-'i' ifepoit
men!, yet terrible in bat le. Well' may their m oth
ers be proud of .such oti'spiing, and may their on I
be in peace. I must give you Mime of 'the exp 'i i-
ence of your noble boys. Tho oiomy placed a
masked uauery at fc.try livi k, 4 miles above tins
place, with the intention of destroying our boats.as
well s to ambuscade tho advance of the army.
But tho vigilance of the pickets discovered it in
time to keep us from being entrapped, mi l there
was a move made to destroy tiie works. The as
sault was mule with two cimpanies of the Hist,
lucked by part of the 12ih regini in. The action
lasted upwards of two hours, in which the rebels
lost between sixty an I one hundred killed an 1 their
battery knocked to pieces. So they found by expe
rience that free boys can tight oil Southern soil
and teach them n lesson they have long wanted
instructions in. The time for which your boys vol
unteered has just expired, no I they are coming
home. In as much as it must be a source of joy to
welcome them to the bos -.ins of friends nnd rela
tives, w e who would be glad to keep them as friends
mi l citizens ns well as ddirrs, have cheerfully to
submit. May heaven's blessing follow them to" the
bojoin of their frien.Is.

A Boy Shot.
The XjrAtcetf fays a small lad, named William
Cadwalader, aged about nine year, son of Mr.
Cadwalailer, of Napoleon, was mortally wounded
on the morning of the 20th ult., by a ram-rod fired
from a gun in the hands of Clonics Tyler, aged
about 12 years, son of Dr. A. 11. Tyler, Tho cir
cmnstniiccs are these i The two boys, with otheis,
had crossed the river for the purpose of play and
enjoyment, ns was their custom almost every Sat
urday, tin ro being no school. Young Tyler took
with him a gnu t shoot birds. After exhausting
the shot, he concbi.led to p-st what cHiciey there
was in the ram-rod, and pi .iced it in the barrel of
the gun. Young Cadnaladtr coining up at the
tim Tiler requested him to leave p home, or he
won! 1 shoot him. The lad supposing him to be
jesting, gave no heed t the ivni'ik, Tyler again
warned him to lea e, an 1 nt the snne instant, ul
m nt, the gun diseha: ged and Cadwalader tell, the
ram-rod entering his right side between the li est
and s.cond lib, passed forward of tho apex of the
right lung and impinged on Ids spine ; then passed
behind the apex of the left lung out through tho
upper portion of the left shoulder blade, paralyzing
the body from the chest down, both in sensition
nnd motion. Tho wounded boy was immediately
carried home; and Dr. Mclluiry called, who is do
ing everything ill his pow er to allcvijlj the sutler
er. but with no hopes of his recovery.
That the shooting w as in "rely a thoughtless nnd
reckless freak, without a know ledge of tho conse
quences, we have no doubt. It is but another fear
ful commentary upon the use of lire-arms in the
blinds of youth. There is scarcely a day that wo
do not read of some deplorable occurrence, the re
sult of beys handling what are ut best dangerous
implements of amusement in the hands of persons
Inore advanced in years.
Shall We Sell?
The Bucyrus Juurunl, in spcating of the policy
which should prevail in regard to outstanding
dues, says: This question is asked every day by
farmers who have wool and other produce which
they nre loth to dispose of at the present low prices.
This is a query which is dillicult to answer. If
prices nre sure to go up within a reasonable time,
it would be of coi.ise, policy to hold, but that "if."
No one is capable of foretelling whether it will or
not. We doubt whether wool will bo nuy higher
this year. Tho fact is, the prices run so high upon
wool, that the business of growing it became too
profitable. Farmers turned their available land
into pasture and meadow for the purpose of raising
sheep, ns at from 3ti to BO rts. per pound, it is more
profitable than any other branch of agriculture. In
a fe.v yours the supply got bevond the demand and
that is nil that is wrong with the w ool market. The
warehouses uud factories of the oast nre full of
wool, and there nro largo amounts in Ohio, that
have never gone forward. Until this is worked up,
sold mid worn out, there is very little prospect for
a rise. But one thing is true, w bother you sell
your woid or hoi I it. Every fanner that owes a
dollar should sell enough produce to pay that dol
lar no difference what the price is. All over
enough to pay deb'.s, you have u right to hold or
sell, ns judgment dictates, but enough to cL'aryourself
of the book of your merchant, grocer and ine-
ctranics, you are in Honor ixiuml to sell. this is
the time of all others that they need w hat is due
them. General fright has seiz.-d everybody. Those
