John has been at that for years past,
and the man who "puts In" more than

There aie over 2,000 national banks
in the United States, since the aate oi
their, organization sixty banks not
600. as the Democratic press has It-
have rone into liquidation; but not
single individual holding their notes
has ever lost a dollar by the failure or
suspension of a national bank.
The Democratic press may assail Dr.
Updegraff to their hearts' content, but
his record as a friend of the greenback
and the greenback's country,' stands
out In honorable contrast to that of his
assailants, who shone ss conspicuously
in the hour of our country's trial as the
friends of graybacks and the country's
destroyers.
The Democracy never had a better
prospect than at present of sweeping
the country this ml.Uazelte.
Well yes, and while you have the
broom in band don't fall to carefully
sween out the offices of the 19 default
in? Democratic County Treasurers, in
Ohio yon might sweep" np a little
odd change, to help the deficiency.
The only proper place for working-

In consideration, we suppose, of old
Fernandy Wood's effort to force free
trade apon the industries of the coun
try, and. the steadfast refusal of the
Democratic party to pas the Home
stead law, for the benefit of working
men. A pretty place for worklngmen
to go, indeed.
The Bellaire Leader is now attempt
Ing to beslaver the Nationals with its
puerile praise after pouring out the
tiny vials of its wrath on them for not
again sneezing when the nnterrlfied
tak"a sor.ff. Webster once said of an
opponent, "when be traduces me I can
smile complacently, bat when he es
says to praise me, Lord have mercy on
iny reputation."
The average profit on bank circula
tion Is 2.62 per cent.; and when the
four per cent, bonds are substituted for
the sixes it will " be less than two per
cent The reason why the banks are
bo quiet and indifferent in the midst of
the out cry against tnem is that they
ao not care mucn wnetner iney retain
their circulation or not. It is not
worth making a fight for.
Whex the question came, Shall we
Lave a country? and shall we have
greenbacks with which to pay the
"boys in blue" for defending the life
of the nation? Dr. Updegraff was found
on the side of the "old flag," with his
nest energies, upholding its bcnor, and
the justness and Integrity of a national
currency, while D. T. Lawson was con
spiring with traitors, dishonoring his
nag, discrediting bis nation, abusing
its currency, and seeking the utter
overthrow of ail. Daniel, you won't
do.
When such papers as the Bellaire
Leader undertake to assail Dr. Upde

and oi the greenback they simply dis
play a lamentable ignorance, only pitl
ble. Dr. Updegraff was an able, fear-
jess, and unfaltering advocate of the
nation's credit and the national mon
ey, and a courageous defender of the
nation's honor, when his opponent was
plotting treason with Vallandlgbam
nanailing the public credit with Pendl6
ton and Thurman, and with them try
ing to anve from xne eartn trie green

rags', and sending greeting to the
graybacka' Sooth. Dr. Updegraff ever
stood ior the old nag, lor his country,
for her honor and her money, when
these worthies did the(r beet to destroy
all forever. .

The Republican party has, to-day, a
cause as sacred as any ever entrusted to
it. It stands alone for the maintenance
of honest money, for the upholding of
national honor and credit, for the pro
tection of all our people in their prop
erty rights, and for the preservation of
social order. The rights of labor are
those most dangerously, assailed. The
right of the laboring man to get for his
day's work dollars that will buy a dot
lar's worth of food; and the right to
keep bis money after he has earned it,
instead oi having it stolen from him by
a form of law those ere among the
sacred rights for which the Republican
party now gives Daiue. .
The true policy is to strengthen the
Democratic party, which has steadily
opposed the bad laws which are
now crippling all enterprise,and taking
employment from thousands who are
reduced to want and destitution.
Gazette. . .
This in the face of the fact known to
every intelligent working man in Bel
mont county, that the last Democratic
Congress was organized in the interest
of free trade, and that during the en
tire session, Fernando Wood, the chief
arx3tle of Democracy in the House,
spent all his power to force upon the
country his free trade policy, which
awakened thunders of indignation on
every hand. Talk of workingmen
seeking refuge in such a party, under
sucn leaders, wiin such a policy. Only
increased distress awaits them if they
neip sucn a party to power.
There is nothing that disturbs th
equanimity ol the Republican leaders
so much as the peace, good order, qui
etness and increased property In the
Southern States since the establishment
of Democratic rule. GazetU."
If the "pestilence that walketh in
darkness and the destruction that
wasteth at noonday," in the South,
since "the establishment of Democratic
rule" down there, is to be taken as an
evidence of the "peace and prosperity"
attending "Democratic rule," God
save use from any further Bcourge of
"the establishment "of Democratic
rule." Yellow fever and "Democratic
rule" are more than any people can
bear.
Any one who still doubts that the
Democracy of Ohio Is truly a reform
party, conscientiously bent on carrying
out all the high-sounding promises of
purity ana reiorm mat were made dur
ing ;the legislative campaign of last
year, has only to cast his eye towards
Tom Ewing's district, where they have
assessed ail the employes of the State
Reform School from five to fifty dollars
eacn to create a corruption fund for the
election or Ewing to Congress. This,
we beg to repeat, is practical Demo
cratic reform. In Converse's district
the assessment on the officials and
employes or State Institutions is ten
tnousand dollars. There are two em
barrassing questions about this money
mm, uow a iruiy reiorm party can
raise corruption funds in this way; and
secondly, how ten thousand dollars can
be honestly used in electing Converse,
Cleveland Leader.
