Seneca Bible Society.
The anniversary of tho Sentva County Bible
Society txk place at Iho M. E. Church, la this
place, on Sabbath evening last. There was a
lnrge attendance from the different churches.
After the preliminary exercises and the reading
of tho varioir. . porta, which were adopted, the

aeveral of the ministers present and by the Clon

Particulars of the Camphene Murder at
Republic.
Tho lady, who was burned to death at Repub
lic, Inst week, was a widow, hired in the family
of Mr. Hnrknoss. While tho family were absent
at a "mite," alio undertook to fill a fluid lamp,
while burning. Tho fluid caught fire, which
communicated to her clothes and, in a moment,
she was in a hlar.i!. She rnn into a bed room in
her fright ami sot tho bed-clothes on firo;shethcn
ran across the street and tried to cross over ft
fence to a neighbor 'a house, but her hands were
so burned that she could not and she fell helpless
to the ground, where she was soon found with
her cloth", entirely burnt off. She lingered un
til 6 o'clock next morning, when sho died, and
was brought to Tiflin next day for interment.
She is snid to have a child living in Toledo.
Fortunately the house of Mr. II. was saved from
destruction.
Fire in Scipio.
A serious conflagration occurred in Seipio
township, alxiut a utile and half north west of
Republic, on last Tuesday about 13 o'clock, In
which thcdwollingof Mr. Norman Benlmm, with
iU contents, wns entirely consumed. The soot
in ono of the chimneys had burned out during
the morning, which Mr. B. watched with great
care; after which, feeling satisfied tlmt all was
safe, ha Went to Republic with load of wood.
Shortly after his dcpiirtiiro, his wife heard a
crackling noise up stairs and, on going up, found
tho upper part of tlio house In a blase. No one
being near to render aid, the whole house wns

The Weather.
Considerable snow fell last Thursday and Fr'.
day, which, followed by a slightrain and a hnrd
freoio, made pretty good sleighing and every
thing that went on runners was brought into im
mediate requisition. Saturday wns the cohleat
day of the sensor,, tha thermometer indicating iu
the morning 13 below xero. The river was o im
pletely frozen over and the skating propenaitie.
of Young America were fully gratified. Every
thing remained "tight as a brick," until Tues
day, when it began to "ense up."
Fine Penmanship.
Mr. Wm. Warren of Oberlin has taken a room
in Tomb's Block and proposes to give instruction
in Penmanship, if a class can be raised. His
specimens executed by the pen, which may be
seen at his room, are tho finest wo ever saw and
wo would advise all, desirous of Improving their
chiroraphy, to givo him a call. See his card in

Improvements in Fremont.
Upwards of forty dwellings Lave been erected
in Fremont during tut past year thirty one on
the west tide and the balance on the east side of
the river. Notwilhautndiug this addition to the
habitable buildings of the place, the demand for
d llings still continues. There is not a house
lu town, at all fit for habitation, that is without
its tenant. Two elegant ehurohes, (laorman Re
formed and Lutheran) have also len erected,
ami many residences have) been remodtle4 and
oruumeuUMl in handsome stylo, giving them tlio
apHMrencc of uuw buildings. Fremont tt thus
steadily throwing off the rough shell of tlio at,
and donuitig the habiliment, suittd to her ad
vance in prosperity apd wealth. The pposeot
is that during the present year our town will
make still greater strides in improvement and
business enterprise.

pushing its way west, and will beopen to Kusto
ria iu a few weeks, and oen to Fin. Hay at an
early day thereafter. This will greatly add to
the business of Fremont and may be excled to
add materially to its population during the pit;

tune, lie wanted for that reason to knew what
the legal eff.et would be of burning in the pros
eucc of reputnblo witnesses, and some one of the
State officers, that amount, and let tlio matter
rest. This was, at ho slated, to avoid adding
anything to tho publio excitement prevailing at
the time. This matter was the sul ject of several
consultations, and I finxlly went to Columbus to
seo to it. I was informed on my nrrivnl there
that the State officers had no knowledge of the
transaction, and thnt the engraver's account, with
tho books ntnl papers in the office, showed a va
riation of less than fivo hundred dollars between
the securities on deposit, and tho circulntion of
the Bunk. Under the circumstances, I thought
it best to await tho arrival of Mr. Johnson, who
wns telegraphed, before holding nn interview
with any ono connected with tho Treasury.
On Mr. Johnson's arrival, he wuj called before
tho Grand Jury, and after his examination there,
explained tho matter In my presence to Mr. Stone
and oth-TS in tho State offices. Thcro certainly
wns no claim, at tho time, in my presence, Hint
tho facts had boou learned from any "loose mem
orandum," or from any other source than Mr.
Johnson himself. The questions mainly talked
of with those gentlemen wero tho proper course
of tho Treasurer under tho circumstances, and
tho relation of the State to tho bill-holders. It is
proper to add that Mr. J. at all times exprcsied
to me a determination to correct any error there
might be in tho tmnsa.tion.
It may not bo improper to call attention to an.
other item which the Receiver introduces under
tho head of "Books closed and stock xiid back."
It is as follows:

April 25, 1857, tho Bank, in on dm, closed its
business and books, by paying off its stockhuld
crs the respective amounts of their stock, and
transferring the indebtedness and the assets of
tho Bank ta new Bunk, ostensibly organ iied
under tho luw of 1851, but which, I believe, has
not tcn formally or legally rocognixed."
I would ask Mr. C. if ho has looked at the
Ohio Suite Reports, vol. 5, pugo 171? If ho Tins
Dot, I would recommend him to do so. I think
ho would find reasons honorable nn 1 prudent for
the resolution of February 2d, l57,nnd the sub
sequent close of books and settlement with the
stockholders by tho Bank. It would bo well for
him in his further researches to look into the of
fices of tho Executive Department. If he does so
ho will find, uuless tomo omission has occurred,
a full recognition of tho ni.w ohoanizatio.i or
the Bask. At least, if he will cull upon the
Bank itself, he will find a certificate, bearing lha
seal of tho State, with tho proper signatures, con
ferring tl Km that organization banking powers

A Suitors Accidknt. We regret to announce
that our neighbor, R. D. Dtimin, Esq., of the
"Democrutio Union," met with a very serious
and distressing accident last week. Ho was en
gaged iu the otlice, and a crock containing Icy,
which was standi g on the stove, becoming very
hot. he took hold of it for the purHse of placing
it in a trough, which is used for washing type,
and which was wet nt the time; the instant tho
crock touched the dump trough it exploded,
dashing the boiling ley into the face of Mr. D ,
burning it horriblv. It was auiiosf d for a time
that ho would either lose his slgjit entirely, or
mar, ins eyoa would oe very seriously injured;
but it affords us great pleasure to be able to an
nounce tlmt his eyes have nut been injured, at
least nut to any great extent. Air. 1). is now do
ing well and we hope he will be able to resume
