A regular meeting of the Village Coun cil will be held at the Council rooms next ' Tuesday evening. Work on the center pier and guards for the new bridge it is expected will commence Monday next. The heavy northeast wind this morn ing blew ice in trom the straits as far up the river as the upper end of Humphrey's dock. Street Commissioner Wilson has been repairing the upper end of Main street this week. It needed it badly in places and wn not taken in hand any too soon The Truseott took several passengers to Mackinaw and Point St. Ignace yester day. She must have h id quite a rough trip for the wind blew quite fresh all duy. The drives, where there is sufficient water, are progressing satisfactory, but we understand that those on the upper streams cannot start without more water than there is at present. As will be seen by the proceedings of Council, Justice Sammons has been des ignated as the Justice before when all trials for the violations of the village or dinances are to take place. The Free Press speaks of milk and water Democrats. If we remember dis tinctly there was one who announced last fall that his bread and butter depend ed on securing a certain office. We should judge, from the amount of work promised by the Council at their last meeting Thursday night, that Vil lage Attorney Bell will fully earn the salary allowed him for hi Suffices. We learn that there is quite a settle ment in the section of the county be tween Long lake and Mullet lake and southwest ot' Long lake, and that they are actually engaged in clearing and im proving their hmds. Some slanderous wretch has had the audacity to send to our efficient foreman, Mr. C. J. Hunt, a chromo of a winter scene in Canada, and written underneath it "Cheboygan in May," showing an amount of ignorance surprising In this enlightened age. The regular monthly meeting of the I lire company was to have taken place last night, but owing to the want of a quorum no business could be transacted. An adjournment was made for one week. As (here is tome important business re quiring the attention ot the members of the company, it is earnestly desired that all the members should be present next Friday evening. There was quite a number of settlers from Trumbull county, Ohio, arrived on the St. Joe and have gone on their lands in Tuse.-irora township. Mr. H. A ."ove iu tlie Uiglit Direction. At the temperance meeting 'last Tues day evening the Executive committee suggested and recommended the pro ettring and fitting un a suit of rooms lu some favorable locality for the use of the organization. The proposition consisted in the cstabiishmeiit of a reading room to be supplied with all the leading daily ami weekly papers and most popular monthly magazines, a hall in which to hold the meetings of the organization, and a club room, provided with means of Html ill i lit, and in which smoking would be allowed. We think this is a move in the right direction. If it is expected to prevent the frequenting of saloons it is necessary that some place should be provided where leisure time can be spent In a pleasant and agreeable manner, and this we think the project recommended by the commit tee would accomplish. e understand that the committee have received a very favorable proposition Irom Mr. Howell to let the entire upper Moor of the Howell block and the room on the second floor formerly occupied by the Free Press This we consider a most favorable locali- j ... ,...! .,,,,1 - i i furnishing the requisite room for the purpose proposed, and we hope the pro ject will be carried out. Ot course it will require funds to accomplish all that is desired, hut we have no doubt but that our lending business men will give the j movement a hearty support and render liberal pecuniary aid. There is no question about the practi cability of the inland navigation project proving a success among those who are at all conversant with it. It is true that the inflow of land from Sturgeon river is an obstacle not calculated upon when the route was projected, but it can be remedied either by the dam or the pro posed cut-off, and proposals for both will be received by the Local Commissioner, and the most feasible method for averting the difficulty will be adopted, but of one thing our citizens can be assured the project wiil be a success, notwith standing it has been pronounced im practicable by some who have not thor oughly investigated the matter. A Card front the Point. To the Editor of the Northern Tbibumk. Point St. Ignace, April 26. It seems an article appeared in the last issue of the Free Press, saying that they understood trouble was brewing at the telegraph office at this place, referring to a message sent by Mr. Cornelius Gal lagher, ot your place, to James Maloney, of this place, which required immediate attention, that Maloney claimed the dis patch was never delivered to him. I. the undersigned, sent said dispatch in question at 6:20 p. m., on the 31t of March, to Maloney, shortly after I had received it, and he, Maloney. sent me an answer to said message on the second day of April, at about 6 P. M., to the above mentioned dispatch, to be sent to Gal lagher, and as the cable was not in work ing order at the time I could not trans mit tbe answer to the Cheboygan office, and about 9 p. M., three hours after it was sent by Mr. Maloney, he came to the office and withdrew his answer. Now. how could it be that Mr. Maloney did not"receive the message, as he elaims, and then send an answer to it to this of fice to be transmitted to Mr. Gallagher. Mr. Maloney knows the whole matter to be false ; but as I am not a customer to his rum shop, therefore I do not expect to have his good will, which does not amount to much. Yours, respectful ly, W. H. IIOMBACH, Manager Telegraph Office, Point St. Tguace. The War in Europe. The war in Europe is row a fixed fact. The Czar issued a manifesto Tuesday morning, ordering his army to cross the line Into Turkey. This is the commence ment of perhaps the most sanguinary military struggle of modern times. As it is to a great extent a religious war, it will be the more relentless. What the end will be is hard to foresee, but it is highly probable that all the powers of Europe will become involved. It will have the effect of reviving the commer cial interest.- of this country. Already breftdstuflfe ofevery description have ta ken a jump upward, which will doubt less be followed by a corresponding ad vance In all other branches of Industry Whatever maybe thought of war as a principal, there is no doubt that the United States will reap large commercial benefits from it. We may expect start ling news soon. Clitirt'li Services. We sire rl.nl to annour.ee the arrival oft Rev. Jl. M. Thompson, pnstor of the Con gregational church.
