NORTHERN TRIBUNE. Entered At the Postnfflce at Cheboygan Mich., as Second Class Matter. SATURDAY, JUNE 26, 1880 NATIONAL REPUBLICAX TICKET. For President, GEN. JAMES A. GARFIELD, of Ohio. For Vice President, GEN. CHESTER A. ARTHUR, of New York. good Avon IIS. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, a Demo cratic paper haa the following good words to say of the nominee of the Re- mblican party for President. It is quite n contrast with some of the'efforts of the "mud slinging" papers of the party. Not only i3 it a good word for the candi date of the Rebublican party but is a tribute to the only country on the globe which admits of such possibilities and when we think that the great majority of the party represented by the Eagle is composed of men who tried to destroy the nation, and that as a party they are laboring to secure by the ballot what they failed to gain by the sword we can only wonder how it is that recognizing as the Eagle does the advantages of this government it can go hand-in-hand with those who did all they could to blot it out of existence. The Eagle of the 9th, inst. says: Excluding political rivalries from view for a moment, it mast be allowed that there is much in the career of Jame9 A. Garfield for every true American to take pride in. It is our boast that in this land there is no honor or dignity to which the son of the humblest person may not, by diligence, attain. In that this is not an empty declamation appears the pre-eminent reason why the day laborer, should, of all oth ers, stand resolutely by the constitution, and be the first to repel any demonstration against the order of the Republic He must, indeed, have a churlish soul, who living under institutions like ours, does not delight to see the equality affirmed in the fundamental law, proven true by the achievements of a man born in obscuri ty. There i9 a victory won for humanity every time a friendless boy, by dint of persevering self denial, rises to a station of honorable com mand in the world. A thousand arguments against the pretentions of casts, or the vanity of wealth without wisdom begets, would be fertile were there not ever recurring illustra tions that nature often choses to cradle her real kings and princes in the abodes of pover ty. The candidate before us carries with him something of this heart warming lustre. Thirty-five years ago he was a barefoot boy driving a horse on the towpath of a canal. Later he was busy at the carpenter's bench toiling at day break and far into the night to earn the means wherewith to purchase knowledge. Un aided by any friends save his own willing hands and ambitious brain, he secured the education of the collegian, and began the public part of his life welTequiped in intellect for the battle. Surely Democrats and Republicans alike may stop discussion for a moment and join in at least one round of applause for the success which has thus far attended a career so gal lantly opened. When we point with pride to Andrew Johnson going from the tailor's bench to study the alphabet, and to Abraham Lincoln, wearied with rail splitting; poriug over his books by the flickering light of a winter's fire, let us also say a good word for the flaxen-haired boy of the tow-path, who no less luckily risen to be a leader in the land, the champion in the great organization, the standard bearer of an army that numbers many millions. A LUCKY SPEECH. At the Indianapolis convention the Hon. D. P. Baldwin was a candidate for Judge of the Supreme Court. Judge Woods was nominated instead, but the convention concluded to call Mr. Bald win out and see what he had to say for himself. He responded in the little speech given below, and then left the hall He scarcely got out of doors when the convention, amid great enthusiasm, nominate him, by acclamation, for Attor ney General. The nomination was to tally unexpected, but Mr. Baldwin's speech struck the popular chord, and he went through with a whirl. The follow ing is the speech: I don't understand why you have so loudly called me out. A defeated candi date is usually expected to take his grievances upon his shoulder and retire to the rear and sulk. But I shall do no Buchathing. Iam enlisted in the Re publican army for the war the whole war, and nothing but the war. My term of enlistment is not contingent upon my personal success. Iam this moment more of a Republican than ever. Gentlemen, our army is composed of two classes of soldiers the regulars and the volunteers. It won't do for the volun teers to sneer at the regulars as "machine men," nor for the regulars to sneer at volunteers as green hands. We have lately seen what the machine, the power of organization and discipline, can do in the way of making political soldiers. I happened to be one of the top seat men at Chicago week before last. As I look ed down into that sea of heads and saw the serried Grant column, under fire in that battle, IJthought of the charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava. "Cannon to right of them, Cannon to left of them. Cannon In front of them, Volleyed and thundered; Stormed at with shot and shell, Nobly they fought and well, Fourht Grant's three hundred." Not a man faltered during .the thirty four charges; yet, when on the-thirty-fifth the volunteer forces, by a majority of only one, carried the battle, every Grant man wheeled into the Garfield line and the old corps took its position at the center, and there, with the right and left flank of volunteers the Blaine and Sherman corps they will all. be found next November, the same old' in vincible Republican party. Gentlemen, in this campaign we are all Grant men; we are all Blaine men; we are all Sherman men; we are all Gar field men. Our individual preferences are all merged in our united choice. Garfield is the youthful leader of the youthful and only progressive party of the United States. We, theRepublicans, have conquered slavery; we have con quered secession; we have conquered fi nance. It now remains for us to con ques the Democratic t party. We have met and captured each successive issue now we propose to meet and capture the party itself. As a boy, Garfield drove mules upon the canal. He is now pre paring to drive Democratic mules up Salt River. Indiana in this campaign expects every Republican to be at his post, and every man to do hi3 whole duty. There must be no faltering. We have no time for grievances. For one I. am! glad 1 1 amj defeated. Judge Woods must now stay at home and cork himself up. A Judicial candidate can't talk. I am free, and with God's help I expect to be at my post upon the stump in Indiana this fall to make the fight for Garfield and glory. . Mankind was reminded of the exis tence of Jefferson Davis and, of the sur vival of the mingled vanity and false sentimentalism characteristic of him, by his appearance in court as a witness at New Orleans last week. The case was that in which the heirs of the late Sarah A. Dorsey seek to set aside the will in which shebequeathedjherestate'to Davis. This i3 asked on the ground of undue in fluence exercised over her by him. The case involved the question of her mental soundness, as to which Davis testified she believed the Confederacy still exist ed; that its truths were eternal and should prevail. He believed the same. If that were insanity they both were crazy. KDITORIAL. NOTKS. The late ConfpiWAtA rvn trvaaa no a been most extravagant in its appropria tions, inev amount to noarhr -nnmn. 000, and yet they will go before the' peo ple aim appeal 10 them to continue them m power on the score of their remarka able economy I Over in England every candidate is ex pected to open a barrel. From returns recentlymade in the campaign for Par liament it is shown that in Manchester the candidates spent $100,000; in Birm ingham, $65,000. in Bradford, $50,0001 in each of three other constituencies the expenditure was $30,000: in another. s:v- 000, General Garfield has requested Gen eral Logan to accept the Chairmanship of the national Republican Committee, but the latter feels that the placelshould be occupied by some other member of the committee, and, if possible, by an original Garfield man. The matter will be determined at the meeting in New York. There are plenty of precedents for the asaults on Gen. G arfield. Thomas Jeffer son was called a Red Republican and an atheist, Madison a coward, Monroe a milksop, John Quincy Adam3 a bargain er and corruptionist, Jackson an adul ter, and Van Buren a libertine, while Lincoln was stigmatised in terms too indecent to repeat. The uncertainty of the political com plexion of the next Congres may be ap preciated when it is remembered that sixty-seven Republicans and forty-eight Democrats in the present Congress were elected by pluralities or by very small majorities. There are thirteen members from Pennsylvania, mostly Republicans, who were elected by plu ralities. The census enumerators claim that the population of the city of Washing ton will be 140,000, which is an increase of about 35,000, or thirty-three per 3 cent, in the in ten years. The population of the District of Colum bia is set down at 172,000 being an in crease of 40,000. This shows a very prosperous condition of affairs at the National Capitol since "Boss" Shepherd ruined the city by his terrible ring frauds. The receipts and expenditures of the treasury from July 1st, 1878, to June 1st, 1880, were: Receipts customs$171,012, 126; intersal revenue, $113,088,930; mis cellaneous $21,181,739; total $305,282,817. Expenditures civil and miscellaneous, $58,940,473; war, $35,921,240;navy, $1,319, 900; interior Indians, $5,109,641; interior pensions, $43,215,173; interest oq public debt, $92,333,514; total, $243,161,944. This exhibit does not include the postal revenues or postal expenditures. The Republican state convention of Indiana was held on Wednesday of last week, and Hon. Albert G. Porte,r of In dianapolis, was nominated for governor on the third ballot. Mr. Porter was a member of Cengress for two terms, from 1S59 to 1863 He i3 a prominet lawyer, and for three years has been First Controller of the U. S. Treasury There were several candidates on the first ballot, General Streight being the strongest by two to one. According to the previously announc ed programme, the House adjourned, leaving the Washburn-Donnelly contest undetermined so that the next session should-,there be a possibility of the.Presi dential elections being thrown into the House, the Democratic majority may perpetrate the larceny of the Minnesota seat, if it be sure anything can be gained by it. The majority was conscientious about it. The seat will not be stolen except upon profitable occasion. The crop report of the Department of Agriculture shows cotton to be in a bet ter condition than at this season a year ago, the prospect now being put down as three per cent, better than at that time. In spring wheat a light increase in acre age over last year is reported. In Iowa the decrease is estimated at 12 per cent. In Minnesota the increase is put at one per cent, in Nebraska at 9, and in Cali fornia at 12. Winter wheat is reported in 4 per cent better condition than was the crop at the corresponding period last year. The Supreme court ofjlndiana has de cided that the constitutional amendment changing the time of holding the elec tion from October to the second Tuesday in November, the day the Presidential election takes place, was not ratified. The court held that it not only required a majority of all the votes cast. A great many ballots were cast by persons who did not vote either for or against the amendment and while a majority of the votes cast upon the question were in its f avor,Jyet there was not a majority for it of all the votes cast. The death of the father of Senator Bayard recalls the extraordinary promi nence of the family in the history of the United States Senate. James Ashton Bayard, father of the late ex-Senator Bayard, was a Senator from 1807 to 1813. His son, Richard II. Bayard, was twice elected Senator, in 1836 and 1841. Rich ard H. Bayard was succeeded in the Sen ate by the late James Ashton Bayard, his brother, who was elected in the Senate in 1851 and remained there until 1864, when he resigned because he would not take the "ironclad." The sugar refiners are making loud complaint at the glucose adulteration of the article, and declare that it is slowly pushing the better qualities of pure yel low sugar out of the market. The de based product is sold, it appears, under the representation that the discovery of a new process of refining has enabled the manufacturers to undersell an article refined according to the familiar method in use in first-class refineries. Other dealers erase that part of the label which shows that the article is not pure sugar, and bring it into direct competi tion with the better grades of unadulter ated yellow at prices at which the latter cannot be offered. A whole family East were poisoned by eating lettuce growing near a potato patch where paris green was used to destroy the bugs. The wind carried enough of the poison to the lettuce to produce the serious results mentioned. Every year witnesses more or less disas ter from the free use of this poison. Everyone using it should remember how deadly are its effects. A prominent phy sician in Indiana carelessly left a plate in which he had mixed the poison with flour where a valuable horse reached it and ate enough to kiU him. It is a doubtful agent, and it will be strange if, upon more careful examination, so dead a poison scattered over plants will not be found incorporated in some way with the fruit of the vine.
