PnhliHhed HtutenienjtH are made to the effect that the proportions of the river and harbor bill now in n epa rations will greatly overshadow previous measures of this character, and that it will require, ac cording to the report of persons who have made inquiries in regard to this, 'or the coming bill about 15,000,( Kioto meet the ('emands. It is said there is, however, good authority for stating that.although the bill will provide in a number of in stances for appropriations considerably larger than have previously been given for the same work of improvement, it will also cut down or omit entirely a number of works of a class heretofore appropriated for, and that upon the whole the bill will not call for an amount greatly, if at all, in excess of other river and harbor bills passed by Congress. How Cheboygan harbor will fare re mains to be seen. It should have a good sized appropriation, and we believe if the importance of the harbor was im pressed upon the members of Congress that a liberal appropriation could be se cured. The trouble has been our citi zens have taken so little interest in the matter, that heretofore the appropria tions have not beeu in keeping with the importance of the harbor, nor with the demands of commerce that the work should be speedily completed. The busi ness of the harbor increases rapidly each year, and the number of crafts that would call here regularly, would be larged increased, if there was a sufficient depth of water to admit steamers of deep draught. llMtrloiiie Society. The dedication of the new Town Hall comes off next Thursday evening when the 5-act drama of "Tifket-of-Leave-Man" will b presented by the Histrionic Society. This Society is composed mainly of home talant and have been re hearsing their several parts for some time until now they feel certain that they can produce the play in good style. The improvements on the hall, of which we have given a full and complete des cription before, are about finished, and this together with the new chairs, paint, lights and the fine, new scenery will have the effect of considerably astonish ing many of our citizens who have not realized what improvements have been going on there for the past few weeks. The old chandiliers have been moved np forward in the hall and set on each side so that they will not obstruct the view of persons seated in the rear end, and a row of double bracket lamps placed along each side of the hall. The play of itself is intensely interesting and all our citizens will'be well repaid for attending. The Histrionic society has gone to the expense of putting in the new scenery and other stage pharaphanalia, and the cost will amount to about $300. It will be the property of the the village, al though the society expect to get their money back by giving entertainments. Lake Disaster. The first Lake disaster! of the season occurred Wednesday, near Fort Gratiot light house, at the lower end of Lake Huron. The schooner Clayton Belle, which wintered here, and went into com mission last week, had a collision with the schooner Parsons, and was injured so verely that she sank in seven minutes, in 8 fathoms of water. Her captain, F. A. Colvin, and three others were drown ed. She was loaded with pig iron from St. Ignace. No reason is assigned for the accident, but it looks like at clear case of carelessness. We understand a telegram was sent Saturday to have the cargo insured. It was valued at $17,000. The vessel was valued at $6,000 and was fully insured. Man MlNalti- On Wrednesday of last week a man by the name of Patrick Murphy was seen on the dock beyond the railroad warehouse, and since then nothing can be ascertain ed of his whereabouts. This and other circumstances, his leaving his boarding house without saying where he was go ing, and leaving his overcoat, although it was cold day, and being a man sub ject to tits of mental aberation, it would seem that he must have found a watery grave, either intentionally or by ncci dent. Army of the Poloin Iteu nlon. There is to be a reunion of the Army of the Potomac at Detroit, June 14th and 15th, and arrangements have been made with most of the railroads for half rates. There are a number of old veteraus in this county, and already quite a large number have signified their intention of attending. All interested parties are re quested to hand their names to II. J. Miner, as a meetiug to effect organiza tion, and make arrangements for attend ing iu a body will soon be called, and then they will be notified of it. The re union promises to be one of great inter est to all who were companions in the war, and a very large attendance is ex pected. Election passed off quietly, and with a good feeling, the Union ticket was elect ed straight. Dr. Beech received the ap pointment of examining surgeon of the pension department, a good man for the place. We presume the Dr. would not trade his appointment for allof the town offices combined. Some of our young men here are mak ing themselves notorious by writing in sulting remarks about ladies, on the boxes and buildings. Ou Saturday a young mail was caught while in the act aud came near being shot by the lady who he was trying to place an iusult upou. She drew a seven barrel revolver and only for his sudden disappearance from the place he uo doubt would be a corpse.
