Make your mark on the 19th century, A forever opened mouth has a great uore. Life is our opportunity to evince our ntness for immortality. io no truly great ti to be radically uinerent from what you are. Charity makes the best of everything and labors to make everything the best tnarlty is meek, will not be glorified, but giveth all the glory to God, who is love. Let your mental hand reach beyond the mere fact if you would grasp all the fact implies. in tue ereat world's exposition of brains, the space is not all taken up or even applied for. The omnivorous mosquito can fetch a very jerky and impious prayer from the lips of a pious saint. tnanty bears with mistakes, pitieth infirmity, strengthens the weak, forgiv eth sin and cleanseth iniquity. A notby does not advance the world in wisdom any more than a man is made handsome by being all mouth. As the ideals of intellectual effort be come higher the sincere worker becomes more thorough, serious and efficient. That peculiar statesmanship made up of maneuver, tact, compromise and dodg ing has the elementsjof a first-class polit ical dude. in mis worm common place persons and silly things draw more than intel lectual force, but the numbers drawn lack quality. Better be true in hell than false in heaven, but such a thing cannot be, for the truest is the best, and the best will survive as fittest, with an infinitude of joy. Parents cannot curse their home and offspring more effectually than to teach by precept or example, the baneful vice of idleness, for where this fatal night shade is fed upon all is death. To look at the present congress, re membering Hamilton, Webster, Clay, Sumner and Garfield, II not favorable to the theory of evolution unless evolution has side shows of intellectual decline. Hypocrisy deceives the hypocrite with the brazen falsity, that man can be suc cessfully two persons, two diametrically opposite characters at the same time, so as to present such a heinous fraud be fore the Almighty, in the way of chal lenge, for his protection and blessing. Traditional dogmas contain some fragments of truth and error mixed in one consolidated compound, but truth contains all that is pure, true and di vine, without any admixture of error, therefore, let our search be for truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Life ll a charming scene, a magic picture, a royal banquet, a harmonious festival, a luminous circle, a brilliant diadem, where beauty, worth, sympathy, tenderness, courage, charity, endurance and legions of angels dwell, minister to, and mako perfect, those who are amiable as a child, braver than a lion, and as loving as Christ. The air, the thiugs wo cnt, the slum bers of rest, society in which we move, the friends of our choice, the nectarean joys of reason, tho elysium bliss of home, the earth on which wo live with so many happy and varied employments, business and pleasures, none of these can bo ap preciated or enjoyed by the lazy loafer, by the miserable sluggard. There are men and women who go around with a chip on tho shoulder, anxious for a quarrel. They will quarrel over religion, politics or the weather, over line fences, chickens or children, over dresss, cats, dogs, or even such small things as themselves. Auything will answer for a quarrel rather than miss. Avoid such nuisances. To disbelieve in tho nobility of work, and have faith in laziness is the most hopeless and wretched atheism. 6od exists to perform. The glory of His mighty acts shineth from the beginning. What He hath brought forth exists to labor. Activity is written on wind and water, upon tho heavens and earth, upon matter and spirit. Idleness is anomoly, the irregular production of sinful man. Tho professional quarreler has no faith in the good, but sees an immensity of bad because of his own wicked heart. His life is made up of tricks, and being mean and malicious, he suspocts many things that do not exist, and always at tributes the worst motives to outward acts. He will injure, insult, and then to save himself from the consequences of insult and injury, will equivocate and lie. Ttiere are 6,000 Americans living in Paris. Such rapid progress has the study of botany made that the number of species of plant known increased from 92,000 in 1853 to nearly 150,000 in 1882. During the first five months of the year 9,942,810 tons of anthracite coal wore raised, an increase of 1,392,375 tons over the corresponding period of last year. Sim ply incarceration for life In Jackson, where he will be well fed, lodged, and not overworked. I ask, is this adequate punishment for such a monstrous crime as that perpetrated upon this little girl, hardly yet removed from tho nursing mother's lap? I know you will agree with mo that it is not; and every father in Christendom will say amen! Murder is becoming one of the tine arts of Mich igan not perhaps in the action itself, which is just as red-handed and diaboli cal u over, but in the aesthetic (?) efforts of tho unscrupulous lawyer to shield and finally clear the criminal, at tho expense of thrice blinded justice, and the befog ged minds of 12 men selected to pass up on tho case. Said an old Scotch judge;o a criminal in the dock before him, "I'm thinking, my mon, a little hanging will do yo na harm." Tho same sentiment will apply to some of the "red handed"' criminals of this state, who, were such the law, would cause fewer "Martha Whitlas" to be fished out of Detroit river. I know I but echo the feelings of a vast majority of the people of Michigan when I say that tho false sentiment which caused the repeal of capital punishment in this state has had its day, and should give place to the edict -old as time "Whosoever shedeth man's blood by man shall his blood be shed!" Can we won der that tho sword of tho avenger of blood follows hard upon tho heels of those who have set the laws of God and man at defiance to gratify a lust for re vengo or brutal passion? Long years has Maine tried the abolishment of the scaffold, to finally return again to it, and if Michigan would keep "Judge Lynch" and his court beyond her borders, she will retrace her steps to tho time when her legislature made the blunder of expunging capital punishment from her statute books.
