The Lincoln Democrat publishes two lines of tho great epic upon Gen. Jackson, written by n western bard : , f . v "Whcn -ou see their eyes glisten, then my men Were the last dying words of A. Jackson, Esquire." And also revives a lament for Alexander Ham- "ton: 4 ;,, . . ... .:. . .,. -"01 Aaron Burr, what have you don 1 ,. ( 1 YouVe shot great General Hamilton " ' ' J ' - You got behind a bunch of thistles, . And shot him ded with tu horse pistuls." , We remember the following, ns good as ei ther, by a "down-east bard," as an ovation on the Presidential succession : . ; ; ' " Come on brave boys with good Intent, ' And fire the guns of government; ; You load and I will tend tho vent, 1 1 Touch her off and let her went." : A HUMOROUS STORY: Tho editor of the Knickerbocker has repeated ly asserted, with as much eloquence as truth, that ours M is a great kedintry." This proposi tion may bo demonstrated by that other nove and seldom quoted proverb, which asserts that ' " one naif the world don t know how the othc half lives." The Northern part of the United btates aro even yet in profound ignorance of so cial life in the West and South. .The exajnrer ate'd, statements of professional tourists, and scribblers, whose aim is to make a good storv who "draw upon their imagination for their facts, and their memory for their details," have been by our Northern neighbors readily gulphed down as actualities, and taking a part for the whole, they. have formed singularly erroneou ideas of us and our daily life. The fact is, one great element in Western character is a consti t utional tendency to hyperbole and exaggeration Travelers, especially those who are professedly in search of material for a book are the peculiar victims of this tendency. No sooner is the not book drawn than everybody is ready with Btoro of little anecdotes of personal experience not onooi vvuicn is even "lounaea on iact. Marvels most marvelous are rapidly transfer red from the hps of tho oblim friend of fellow traveler to the paos of his victim, who is hoax ed, canarde, or in Western pliraso " put thro'," fooled to the top of his bent. That dear, good old Mrs. btowe is a rich example of what w have been saying. Poor old lady ! her victim izalion in this way is really laughable. We are not certain, however, that for a sum of money equal to the profits of her Tom foolery.we wol'd not now consent to undergo an equal amoun of humbugging.' " You have a very large hand Captain," remarked a slender younsr New Ens: lander, who. had been fiercely threatening to publish an account of his tour in tho slave States to a raw-boned boatman on the Ohio ' u I should say I had," replied the Captain, ns he thrust forward his hard, brawny fist within nn inch or so of tho youngsters nose. "I should say I had," and here the young gentleman began to retire from the formidable assemblage of over crown bones, flesh and muscles. . "Do vou know how I got it, fir," shouted tho Captain, in a voice like the roar of tho surf, and following up thctourist as ho retired. "Do you know howl got it sir? I'll tell you; I made this hand hard, sir, by knocking down niggars. That's the way it got hard and I know many a man's that s harder, from the samo cause, bv bir." Tho young Abolitionist precipitately retired and not long after the Captain had tho satisfac tion of receiving an abolition journal, wherein i was gravely asserted with becoming indignation that the brawny hands of tho Western boatmen had often been made the subject ol comment and they were occasioned generally by the hab it of knocking tho heads of the negroes in their employ, a fact of which they boast loudly in ev cry company. . This is not an isolated instanco of tho exercise of this malicious humor. Ilundrcdsof such can drides are practiced everyday, on all conceivable Bubjects. Dress in Olden Time. Much is said of tho extravagance of tho present generation in the matter of dress, and there is undoubtedly too much of it. Our forefathers, however, were not wholly free from tho folly of indulging in finoclothes. The upper classes andlhesodis tinctions of society were far more regarded than at present made a great display in this partic ular. Scarlet and gold were the favorite colors. Could some of our ancient citizens walk down Middle 6trcet in their full costume, they would create a great sensation. Mr. Joshua Freeman, n prominent citizen hero during tho latter part of tho last century, thus describes, according to Willis, the dress ho wore when he went a court ing, in 1750. He said ho wore "full bottomed W12 and cocked hat, tcarlct coat and small clothes, white vest and- stockings, shoes and buckles, and two watches, one on each side.'" This surpasses any foppery of tho present day 1 The ladies were by no means behind tho oth er sex in their display of finery. They indulg. ed in high head-dresses, rich stomachers, bro cade gowns, with ruiHes nt the elbows and neck, and 6carlet or crimson cloaks. These articles were often imported from London, at a high cost. Col. Jacob Wendall, a merchant of Boston, who died in 1761, is thus described : " His dress was rich, being a scarlet embroid ered coat, gold laced cocked hat, embroidered long waistcoat, small clothes, with gold knee buckles as the occasion or business required; full rufiles at the bosom or w;ists, and walking . with a gold headed cane." It was quite common to trim coats and breech es with gold, and gold buttons and buckles arc often mentioned in wills. Snow Storm, is Olden Times. Tho year 1717 is memorable in the history of New Eng. land on account of tho unusual quantity of snow which fell February 20lh and 24th of that year. In thoso two storms the earth was covered with p.novv from 10 to 15 feet deep. Many houses of one story were buried, and in numerous cases, paths were dug from houso to house under tho snow drifts. The visits wcro made by means of snow shoes, the wearers having first stepped out of their chamber windows. One gentleman, wishing to visit his lady love, walked three miles with snow hoes, and entered her residence as ho left hia own, namely: by the chamber win dow. He was cordially received, as ho was the first person the family had seen from abroad for n weekl Cotton Mather has left a manuscript account of "this great snow storm," and tho many marvels and prodigies attending it.
