THE GRAND RIVER TIMES, Juke 24. LOCAL AND MISCELLANEOUS. OUR NEW EXCHANGES. Within the few weeks last passed, and since we assumed the editorial charge of tho Times, we have received the following named newspapers as addi tions to our exchange list. We would express our thanks to the several editors and publishers of the papers especially to those at a distance for their gentleman-like and liberal courtesy. Maine. Gospel Banner, Augusta. Vermont. Citizen, Vergennes. Massachusetts. Investigator, Boston. New York. New Jerusalem Messenger, N.York City. A ge of Progress, Buffalo. Ohio. Spiritual Universe, Cleveland. Journal, Callipolis. Indiana. Jlepullican, Valparaiso. Herald and Bra, Indianapolis. Crisis, Laporte. Illinois. Ledger, Chicago. Commercial, Feru. Journal, Marengo. low x. Pioneer, West Union. Democrat, Osage Minnesota Ter. Herald, Falrbault. Sentinel, Red Wing. Wisconsin. Cayuga Chief, Ft. Atkinson. Jour nal, Fox Lake. Home, Ripon. Alabama. Herald, Notasulga. State Rights Democrat, Elba. Florida. Phoenix, Milton. MicniOAN.lryua, Romeo. Jtecord, Allegan. .Gazette, Ionia. Since the Times has taken an independent stand, many of its exchanges in this state (mostly demo cratic) have discontinued their favors. This leads us to sunnost that thev are of that class who will receive nothing as good unless it comes from their own party, and revolves in the same sphere with themselves. We can part with them, however, since it appears we must. Still, we have faith to believe, that with our present list of exchanges, we can furnish a good and acceptable variety of reading. It frequently occurs that city papers, especially those of Boston and New York, refuse to exchange with country papers, considering theirs the most valuable. It may bo so. They certainly are cnti tied to be their own judges. But we have known . instances of city papers receiving subscribers thro' the influence of the country press. While we think that we receive some excellent Journals, we would not ask other people to bend to our opinions, nor admire a thing because wo do. Yet, should any of our patrons wish to subscribe for a paper published at a distance, we will, at any time, be pleased to exhibit our exchanges, and will receive and forward subscriptions to the publshers Lumbermen's Bank. Messrs. E. L. Fuller & Co. have opened a banking and exchange office mndcr the above name, in Grand Haven, first door west of Cutler & Warts' store. In connection with the transaction of a general banking and exchange business in which they intend to invest $73,000 or $100,000 they propose to engage in the buying and selling of lumber by tho cargo, &c. We do not know how much of those branches of business there is to be done in Grand Haven but certainly wish Messrs. Fuller & Co. success in their new enterprise. By tho politeness of Mr. Patterson, the gentlemanly clerk of tho steamer Huron, we re ceived on Sunday morning last, New York papers of Friday ; and Chicago papers of Saturday which contained telegraphic dispatches of the same day, from Washington, New York, Boston, Louisville and Quebec, being 4 days in advance of the mails. A mail route from Chicago to Grandllavcn would be of great advantage to Ottawa county. 0C7"We would tender our thanks to A J.Leooat, of tho Washington House, for favor of late Chi cago papers1 07" We learn by the late telegraphic reports, that the rain has caused much damage to the X. Y. & Erie R. R. Such injuries will occasionally be experienced by any road ; but with the efficient and thorough management by which this popular route is governed, such obstacles are 6pcedily and admirably overcome. Self Reliance the Basis of Renown. An excellent communication on this theme, from " Marco," was received too late for this issue. It will be published next week. TnE Markets. For the benefit of farmers and others interested, we publish each week, a report of market prices in this place, Detroit and Chicago. We intend to have them carefully corrected, and reliable.
