perity; a circulating medium to pay her deb's,
tools to work with, and ahe will stand upon her

it be with Virginia, it y u allow her through her
Hanks, but respite.

The National Intelligencer contains n very spi- J
rile I debate on the proposition to moke a loan to
meet the pressing engagements of the Government,
nnd preserve the public faiih inviolate. The im
mediate proposition before the Mouse, was an
amendment offered by the Committee of Waysnnd
Means, in pursuance of the request of the Admin
istraiion—to permit the public Stock to be sold for
whatever it would bring. This piopovilion provok
ed the wrath of Mr. Wise, who denounced it (sup
posing it erroneously to be a Wh g proposition) ns
the severest stah, which could be given to the public
credit. Denunciation from that quirter of a proposi
tion of the A Jministraiion itself, was treated in a
proper manner by Mr Fillmore—who furnished the
written proofs—thnt the Committee had only acted
in accordance with the wishes of the Administration!

The debate wav continued by Mr Pickens, who 1
could, with difficulty, suppress his scorn of the Ad
ministration. "It did not beenme him [he saidj to
sustain the credit nnd the measures of those who
bad brought the credit of the country to its piesent
degradation. When the i uestion was nikt.il, who
struck down their credit? he answered, it was the .
profligate expenditures of this Government, and the !
reckless disposal of the public revenue from the j
Public LanJs.”
Several other Locofoco orators followed on the i
same key—oil denouncing extravagance, public '
debt—the authors of it, flee.—and arcribing the ex
isting embarrassments of the Government to the 1
Distribution. These gentleman were all taken in;
band l>y Messrs. Wm. C. Johnson, Marshall)
Sallonstall and Stanly; who gave point and di
rection to the invectives of the Locofocos, and
showed, conclusi-ely, that the Icon sought to l.c
authorized was simply to pay adrbt contracted by
the Van Durcii dynasty. Van lb re n and his pro- !
digal Administration were the authors of the exit
ing embarrassments—They bad consumed J* mil
lions a year more thnn the reve me amounted to,
and had been, luckily for them, kicked out of office
just at the tune, when their waste and prodigality
could no longer be concealed, anc' when it was ah'
aolulely necessary to make pro sioi to preserve
the National honour. As to the proceeds of the
public lands being ordered to l.e distributed among
the States—producing oil the emlisrras-nient*
spoken of—it was admitted that only $200,000 had
yet been received fram that aouree, and how was ii
possible that that paltry sum could redeem 12 mil
lions of debt, including Levi Woodbury’s treasury
notes? Much money, it was hoped and believed,
would be received from the public lands, and dis
tributed among its rightful owners—but if more
had been received than at any former period—it
would still have been wholly inadequate to supply
the vacuum in the Treasury.

cnfocoism in charging the Whigs -villi extravagance
in making provision to pay the debts of its creation:
“This debate has, as fir as it has gone on, afford
ed food enough for comment, in no merry vein, nnd
yst in some of its aspects, in its connexions nnd its
conjunctions, as well as its abs'rai linns, it docs fur
nish matter for mirth rather than for any opposite
sentiment. Who but must smile at Ibis proposition
for an extended loan being opposed, now with fierce
denunciation and anon with excruciating raillery,
by certain gentlemen who descr-e to he esteemed
leaders of the parly siyling itmlf ••Democratic,”
and styled by others “Loeofoco ?” By some ofihese
gentlemen an irrepressible indigna'ion is felt and
expressed at the atrocity ol thispr ijcct for the crea
tion of a National Debt. Oihcn, innocents that
they are, have no name for such r perfidy to Whig
principle* and Whig profeassions ! No mortal man,
instructed only by the vehemence of these expan
sions of sentiment, could for a rnoi lent suppose that

Happy for the coun'ry (wish not.’) that these
same Wlugn got the reins out of it e bands of these
great economises at the end of the last four years,
or Il-aven knows where they w mid have landed
us, having contrived, during those four short yeirs
of profound peace, to spend seventeen trillions of
surplus revenue which they found in the Tr-osury,
nnd to contract a debt of some twenty millions of
dollars beside-; and, wlial is the worst of if, without
leaving anything to show for the enormous expen
diturc."

The joint resolution for adjo irnment to-day,
was yesterday rescinded. The rdjournment may
take place Friday—tho' the prohibilily is, that it
will nut before Monday. The amended hank bill,
nnd the James River bill, have both to he acted
upon—besides numerous other bills or local nnd
genera! interest.

It will be perceived that the managers have ap
propriated the Inst night of the dramatic season to
IheBenefitof Mr Pearce. Those good nnd liberal
citizens, and others, who havs tended lo supply the
deserving Corps within the Citadel, should not, on
this occasion, forget the s otinel who has been so

Ltile, known here in the palmy days of Oiifert
