SHENANDOAH HERALD ?? FUBLISB?D WEEKLY BT JOHN H. GRABILL WOODSTOeTK, VIRGINIA. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, i907. Mr. Editor: For the past two months I have been reading political ar? ticles in your valuable paper ove: the signatures of "Republican," "V\ etc. I don't know who this "republican" is but I do know that he has attacked every lepublican officeholder in this county that has been Elected by the people, and has never touched the 'Federal appointees.' Let this "Republican" throw the "limelight" on this class of "of? fice sharks" and see if they give the people the service which they are supposed to give, and are paid large salaries fe>r so doing. If this "only fair Republican, in this county, will do this, I know of one post office in this county where the patrons will receive better service. A Republican, from principal and not for office. We are informed Mr. Lorenzo Rittenour, of Powell's Fort, has caught ..the bell Buzzard, which has been wearing the bell so long, and which has been seen in dis? tant sections of the country. From the way his Buzzardship flopped his wings and proudly sailed over the county her looked very much like an officeholder. But "Lon" has taken off his bell and will let him return to the woods, without his usual badge of distinction. Now wont that Buzzard be lonesome, with? out the tinkle of the bell he has woru so long ? 'Tis about as lonesome as Messrs. Logan, Spik? er and Hutcheson will be after Jan. 1st next when the official bells will be taken off of them. Rush H. \\ illiamson is we are glad to say u.eeting with great encouragement. Mr. Williamson is a young man of fine appear? ance, pleasant address, ano thoroughly equipped for the of? fice of Commonwealth's Attor? ney, and if elected will make Shenandoah county a fine official. Mr. Logan his opponent is a inuch older attorney, and has business independent of his office of (Commonwealth's attorney and as lawyer. He is also connected with the Shenandoah Valley Building and Loan Association, which position doubtless pays him a good salary. Let us aid this young man on election day. > * * The secret organizttion now go? ing on in the ranks of the repub? lican party for the purpose of or? ganizing to overthrow the reign of the "Office Grabbers Trust", of the republican party, of the county, shows a determination on of the part of republicans of this county to still stand for fair plav and equal oppurtunities to all, and to strike down any man or any set of men, who put them? selves before party or party loyal? ty. The doctrines of the repub? lican partv are eternal. These doc? trines relate to principles, and not men, a man who calls him? self a republican and will not re? spect his party creed, is not a member ot that, and the people should not permit themselves te be fooled and deceived by sud people. Dan'l Spiker, J. C. Hutcheson, W. W. Logan and B. B. Bowman when they refus? ed to submit their names to a partv convention for nomination according to party authority, but upon the contrary had Albert G. Shaver & Co., to proclaim them as the nominees of said party, ignored party law, and put them? selves outside of the party, this bein? true, the republicans are at liberty to vote against these men, and not be violating party obli? gation. Deiwn with such l-oss ism, once and for all. A Republican. Had Tetter for Thirty Years. I have suffered with tetter for thirty years and have tried almost countless leroedies with little, it any, relief. Three boxes of Chamberlain's Sahe cured me. It was a torture. It breaks out a little sometimes, hut nothing to what it used to do.?D. H. Beach, Midland City, Ala. Chamberlain's Salve ls for ssle bv Walton A Smoot. Governor Swanson has appointed David V. During the County campaign >f lf'03 a great cry was raised tgainst the candidacy of Capt. j. W. Koontz for re-election to he office of County Treasurer because, it was openly and per? sistently stated, that the people )f Shenandoah County "wanted i settlement" after Capt. Koontz's incumbency of the office for more than twenty-five years, and the statement was also made, not secretly, but publicly, that if this settlement 'was made Capt. Koontz would be short. This argument had telling effect on people, who, on reflection, should have known better, and by its persistent and insidious advocacy resulted in the defeat of Capt. Koontz by about twenty-seven votes. So the people were en? titled to their settlement, and what was the result? After a hounding and persecution the like of which has seldom been in Shen? andoah County, he turned over to the Board of Supervisors his check for $17,000.00, the same being in full for all money in his hands due the County anel State, and was, without objection, re? leased from his bond and his bondsmen discharged from all liability bv the circuit court of Shenandoah County. And since then not a word that even the most acute ear could mistake for "settlement" has been pronounc? ed by his opponents, while their countenances take on a greenish tinge whenever the word is men tioned in their pres- nee. And now, the people of Shen? andoah County having defeated Capt. Koontz for re-election to the office which he so long honor? ed on account of the unjust sus? picion raised by his opponents that perhaps, because he had been in office so long he would have used the County's money, are they going to allow bim to remain in private life with this unjust stigma upon him? Not if the people of Shenandoah County know themselves, and they rather think they do. They are goini: to reward the man who handled the funds of Shenandoah County for twenty-five years or more and settled at that time to the cent, by putting him back in the Treasurer's office by a majority which will show that the people of old Shenandoah recognize when they have made a mistake and have acted unjustly, and are willing and anxious to rectify the injustice done four years ago by the only effective means in their power. The sentiment ol the people all over the County seems to be "we put him out four years ago because of false charges, and now that they have been proven false the onlv thing that we can do by way of recom? pense is to give him another term." Justice. A passenger train of the Southern Railway wa* derailed and wrecked near Kyan's Siding, Nelson countv, shortly before 6 o'clock Sunday morn? ing. .TS passengers were slightly in? jured, but no orse was killed.
