SHENANDOAH HERALD ?S PlBLISIillD WKKK.LY BY JOHN H GRABILL aa: ~ . I Sa ?5f WOODSTOCK, VIBGINTA. FRIDAY FEBRUARY 21, 1908. The Republican County Con? vention is called to meet in Ed? inburg, on March 7th. CLASS LEGISLATION. Senator Mann has introduced in the Senate of Virginia a bill which provides that "if any person, company or corporation shall damage any public road, bridge or causeway by hauling logs or saw-mill timber thereon and shall not repair the damage done within flee days after being notified ot said damage by the officer having charge of said road, causeway or bridge, or by any member of the Board of Supervisors of the county in which said damaged road, cause? way or bridge, is situated, he shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be fined not less than ten or more than one hundred! dollars or be imprisoned not ex-l cceding thirty days, &c." If this is not the rankest kird of class legislation, what is it ? A man with a traction engine, a heavy load of rock, wheat < r Other farm product may break down a bridge with impunity, but if a man with a load of tim? ber should break down some in? significant corduroy bridge, or cut a deep rut in a soft road, he is liable to be jerked up, and cast into prison, or fined not ex? ceeding one hundred dollars If the Legislature of Virginia is to be engaged in the discus cussion and passage of such bills, we can readily see why Gov. Swanson is opposed to an extra session. It is now as certain as any political future event can be that Taft will be the nominee of the Republican party. The Presi? dent is very much interested in the nomination of Taft for the reason thau Taft is expected to carry out Roosevelt's policies. It would be more creditable to the President, it, at the expiration of his term of office, he would retire gracefullv and permit his successor to carry out his own policy. It is not difficult to be? lieve that it would be possible for his successor to make a great improvement. While not as sure as Taft of his nomination, it is more than probable that Bryan will be the democratic nominee. There is a general feeling among democrats that Bryan will be the nominee, but at the same time there is considerable doubt about his election. The democrats have more than a good fighting chance of winning theelection, if they could nominate a conserva? tive man who could command the influence of Mr. Bryan and his party followers. Today Mr. Bryan has a better chance of se? curing the nomination than anv other democrat in the party. Yet there are other democrats who would stand a much better chance of election than Mr. Bryan. The republicans realize the situation and are really anxious to see Bryan nominated. They do not want a man who, thev believe, could carry a few of the middle states, and seve? ral of the middle west. The Southern states are counted for Mr. Bryan or any other good democrat, w nai inc ucuiociaiK party needs is a ticket that can carry New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Indiana, and seve? ral of the Western states. If the party is able to select such a tick? et, its success is almost assured. Senator Ward oilered a bill providing for the sale of stock held by the State in Internal Improvement Com-j panies where no dividends have been paid for fifteen years. We do not understand the ob? ject of this law unless it be that j the state stock in turnpikes be sold. Stock in these roads have been soli at a nominal price, probably as low as 5cts. on the dollar. While the State has re? ceived no dividends, she has been paid for her investment in the enhanced price of lands and the large increase in revenue to the State. What has the State or the people to gain by throwing this stock on the market, to be gobbled up by some corporation?. We would like to understand the ? Object of the bill before we com- j ^Qent further, 1 mmmmmmmti a, tmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm^ ?LET US HAVE PEACR." The time for the reorganize tion ot the Republican Party is j at hand. Let the Republicans of the county remember, "united we stand, divided we fall." Let them come to the rescue of the I partv in Old Shenandoah County, which of late years has tuen rent asunder bv factional leader? ship; let them determine that such leadership shall cease, and that our party shall be reorgan? ized alon honorable unselfish lines; recognizing everv element of the party; doing equal justice to all?with such an organiza? tion we can present a solid front to our opponents in the fu? ture and prevent tl em from oc? cupying the field, which belongs to the Republican Partv by rea? son of superior strength. Li I us again have an organization, whose purpose shall be to right the enemy, and not to wage a crusade against Republicans; which latter course has resulted in the loss of two of the most im? portant county offices, and which it continued will surely result in the ignominious defeat of our party in the future. Is there a mun in the county, worthy to be called a Republican v.l.o is not willing to subordinate selfish con? siderations, and personal feeling; willing to 4'let by goues be by goncs;" willing to "let the dead past burry its dead," for the sake of harmonizing the Republican Party in Shenandoah county, upon an honorable, fraternal bnsis? If there is let him stand aside for the good of ""theparty, or be marched over by the Re? publican column. Let delegates be sent to the County Convention determined to elect some intelli? gent youngman as County Chair? man, and a County Committee pledged to carry out the above suggestions, and the Republican Party in oki Shenandoah will be united again not only in name but in fact, and will roll up a handsome majority for the Re? publican candidate for President at the November election, and will be invincible in the county in the future.
