Within the last ten vears the progress of discov ery in every department of knowledge haa made a new work, of reference aji imperative want. The movement of political ff:iir has kept pace with the discoveries of science, and their fruitful application to the industrial and nsefal art" and the convenience and refinement ofaoci.il Mfe. Ureat wars and eoieijunt revolniions hare occur red, involving national cahnges of peculiar moment. The civil war of onr own country, which Wat-at it height when the last volume of tho old work appeared, lias happily been ended, nd a new course of commercial and industrial activity has been commenced. Lar-e accessions to our geographical knowledge have beeu made by the indefatigable explorers of Africa. The gr.'at political revolutions of the latt deeate, with the national result of the lapse of time, have brought into politic view a multitude of new nion, whose names are in every one's mouth, and of whose lives every ore is curious to know the par ticulars. Great battles have been fought and im portant seiges maintained, of which the details are as yet preserved only in the newspaper or in the transient publications of the day, but which ought now to take their place in peruiaucnt and authen tic history. In preparing the present edition foi the pres, it has accordingly been the aim of the edit-rj to bring down the information to the latest possible dates, and to furnish an accurate account of Ilia most recent dicoveries in science, of every fresh production in literature, and of the newest inven tions in the practical arts as well as to give a suc cinct and original record of the progress of poliical and historical events The work has been begun after long and careful preliminary labor, and with the most ample resour ces for carrying it on to a successful termination, one of the original stereotype plates have been ascd, but every page has been printed on new Cyc lopardia, with fee same plan and compass as its pre decessor, but with a far greater pecuniaiy expen diture, and witb such improvements, in its compo sition as hare been suggested by longer experience and enlarged knowledge. a The illustrationa which are introduced for the first time in the present edition have been added not far the t-ake of pictorial effect, but to give greater lucidity and force to the explanation in the text. They embrace all branches cf seienco and of natural history, and depict the roost famous and remarkable features of scenery architecture, and art, as well as the various processes and mechan ics and manufactures, .tit hough intended for in struction rather than cmbelishnient, no pains have been spared to iuaure their artistic excellence; the cost of their execution is enormous, audit is b4ieved they will tind a welcome reception as au admirable feature cf lb Cyclopedia aud worthy of its high character. ; .
