Yesterday was court day at Abing don, and as usual, the world and his wife were there, little men aud big men, old men and young men, ugly men and pretty men (not many of the hitter,) blue jeans men and gray jeans men, all were there. Our American peoplo will go to court, it matters not whether they have a cose or not; there can be no court without them. It Is a sacred duty that eannot be neglected without running against their own consciences. In the court room, the most jrotm nenl object was a little mau (be be longs to the class of pretty man,) oc cupying the seat of justice, with evi dent consciousness of the dignity and responsibility of his position. Though young in. years, his honor has the rep utation of being one of the best Judges in the State. His bearing on this oc casion and prompt manner of dis patching business created a very fa vorable impression on the writer. Outside of the court room the usua amount of trafficking and trading vast g)ing ou each auctioneer trying to outdo his neighbor in efforts to be wit ty and to attract the largest crowd. A9 they strenuously plied tluir voca tion in tones that would excite the en vy of old Stentor himself, thej' seem e 1 to realize an ecstacy of bliss in being 'lie observed of all observers. These men ure periodically happy every court day. Bat to conclude. Abingdon is beau tiful for situation, is well supplied with public buildings. Hotels, Schools, Churches, has many handsome private residences but the only sign of growth most note worthy, consisted in the Kreen grass and the spreading trees. uothed with bloom and beauty inci dent to the season. , , T mcbburg 4 50 r-x and 5 a m. Denny, who announces himself a candidate for the Senate in the next Legislature of Tensessee. He is too well known to need praise at our hands; suffice it to say no better man could be found to fill the position, and we trut his an nouncement will meet with (generai approbation. A CARD. To the People of the Second Sen-: atorial District, Composed of the Counties of Sulli- van, Hawkins, Clal- " borne, Hancock, . and Hamblen. I take this method of announcing to you that I am a candidate to represent you in the Senatorial branch of the 30th Geueral Assembly of your State. In making this announcement, I am free to etale, that I have no disposition to disregard the wishes of the people, but on the contrary, I cannot be in duced to lend myself to a ' policy that will, in any way, disturb the harmo ny of the party or contribute to Us defeat. Knowing that the people are perfectly competent to make a proper selection, I shall hold myself ready to submit to their wishes, be.they what t'jey may. - ... .. Respectfully. L. H. Denny-. April 27th. 1S74. Communicated., " , Dear "News : If t'ae "Local" of the Courier had taken the pains to read my article "On the late fire," he would have found, that the colored man, was not excluded from my roll of honor. Indeed it would have been wron, to have done so. "Honor to whom honor is. due"- is a part of my creed. . . - f In my account, no one of the 50 or CO who deserved credit for their ef forts to save the Store House occu pied by Col. Dunn, was given prom inence over the other. This , may have given rise to the - Courier's re marks, if so, it was unmerited ; for I had no time to watch the personal heroism of each individual, and to determine their order of precedence. Where so many were engaged, doing the very best taey co dd to extin i!u:sh the Amies, I doubt the pro prietv of making "Inviduous distinc tions." Though the few who are sometimes singled out of a crowd, may richly deserve the exclusive praise intended to be accorded to them ; this much I kaow, it is never received with general approbation. Though "coiitiriEations strong as j. loots of Holy Writ" am! as numerous as the sands on the sea shore, were produced t prove that tlie proprietor of Dr. Side's Catarrh Remedy is in earnest, and ncans what be says, when he offers Sr-V ivward for any case ot Catarrh which lie can not cure, yet there would be some skeptics and logics who would continue to shout "JJumfniyr' 11u.mi:ug:!;' "It cannot be, because Dr. llon.espnu says Ciit tarrh cannot le cured." Now, this Dr. Homespun is the identical, good Matured old fellow who Jiiies!ly be lieves and persists in declaring, that Uils earth Is not round or "spherical; but as lliit as a "slap-jack," and does not turn over,-otherwise the water would all be spiiled out of Deacon Ba-eom's mill pond. But astronomi cal science has potitively demonstrated and proven that Dr. Homespun is wroug in supposing the earth to be fiat and stationary, and medical science is daily pioving the fact that he is no less mistaken and brhtnd the times in regard to the curability of Catarrh In short it has been po.-tively proven that this world moves, and that medi cal science isjwojr&sstue the opinion of Dr. Homespun to the contrary not- i withstanding, thousands who have used it attest.: ' '.
