from which mankind suffer over a large part of
toe Rlabe. is the consequence ot a diseased action
in the system, induced by tbe poisonous miasm of
vegetable decay. This exhalation k evolved by
the action of solar heat on wet soil, and rites with
the watery vapor from it. While the sun is below
the horizon this vapor linsen. near the earth's sur
face, and the virus is taken with it through the
lunn into tbe blood. There it arts as an irritating
poion on the internal viscera and excreting organa
of the body. The liver liecomea torpid and fails to
secrete not only this virus, but also the bile from
the blond. Both the t iru and the bile accumulate
in the circulation, and produce violent constitu
tional disorder. The spleen, the kidneys, and the
