New York Goromcrcial says that the
attention of men of scienco lias been
drawn to nn extraordinary discovery
made in a neighboring depiitment. A
grave-digger, tlroning up some earth,
camo upon a body in a sate of perfect
preservation. On examinatiop.il prov
ed to be that of nn individual buried
thirty-seven years'affo. lie had died
from tho effectsoftho bite of a road
do;. The shroud and the coQin had
fallen to dust, but the body remained
intact. This is the third exhumation
made within twenty years of bodies of
the victims of hydrophobia, under
similar circumstances; and it would
really seem that they arc beyond the
reach of decomposition. Tlio registry
of deaths was consulted, but no men
tion of the cmbalmem of the body was
found.
How to Drive awat MosQuinp.s.
Everybody is interested to know how
to drive nway mosquitoes. Camphor
is the most powerful n"ent. A cam
phor bng hung up in an open casement
will prove a mos effectual barrier to
their entrance. Camphorated spirits.
Applied ns perfume to the fnco and
hands, will proe an effectual pre ent
ire; but when bitten by them, aromat
ic vinegar is the best autidote.
Cunious Fact. The Xeie-Iavcn
Register states ihat towards the clnsejof
the Revolution the onncls of the North
Church in that city sent to Boston for
-nails to make rep.tlis with, when one of
the kegs sent in return for the order
was found to contain Spanish dollars.
The deacons wrote to the Boston roer
chant that there was an eiror in ship
ping the goods' but he answcied that
the nails were sold as he bonjil thini:
of a privateersraan, and heeould'nt rec
tify mistakes. So the silver was melt
ed up, and mado into a service of pUti
for the church, which is in use at the
present day.
Fever and Ague,
join which mankind suffer over a Urge part of
the globe, is the consequence of a discasal action
.n the system, induced by the poisonous miasm of
vegetable decay. This exhalation is evolved by
the action of solar heat on wet soil, and rises with
the wa'ery vapor from it. "While the sun is below
the- horizon tins vapor lingers nenr the earth's sur
face, rr.d the vini3 is ta:en with it through the
limis iato the MoDd. There it arts as an irritating
poi-ou on the internal isccn and excreting oktsm
of the body. The liter becomes torpid and fails to
snjrete not otdr this vims, but also the bile frrtn
the blood. Bot!. the virus and tho bile-accumulate
in the circulation, and produce violent constitu
tional dl 3rd"r. Tne sn'een, the kidneys, and the
staiiach sympathise wnh the he-, and become
disordered also. Finally, the iustUet of cur or
Rinism, as if in an attempt to expel the noxious
infusion, concentrates the whole blood of the body
in the internal exerctmes to f ?rce tbsrn to cast it
out. The bbol leaves the surf ice, and nul.ee. to
the central organs with congestive violence. This
is the CaiLt.. Bat in this effort it fails. Then the
c cvci follows, in which the Uo-d leav es the cen
tral organs and rushes to tne surface, as if in
aiathcr sJ-ir to cir-cl the irritating prison through
that cJior RrMt excretory the skin. In this
alo it falls, and the system abandons tho attempt
cihauited, sad waits for the recovery of streigUi
to repeat the Inpless effort another day. These
are the flu or piroxvsms cf Fever axs Ague.
Sach ccnititutional diarcU:r vrill of course under
