The hot weather still prevails, but can say it is remarkable how vegetation is holding out green. Some early corn is needing rain now. Late crops look good and continue to grow. ' There is no serious illness in this neighborhood, and no- one is re ported hurt over the 4th of July celebration, as the Fourth was celebrated at different places this year. W.M. McWethy and family, A. Burch and family and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Prough were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Cawlield, Sunday. Tom White and family spent Sunday at Mr. Snyder's. J. F. McWethy and family spent Sunday at G. W. Brown's. Everybody invited to Sunday School and worship at 10 o'clock m., at Ervin every Sunday. Bring your bibles. Lesson for July 9th, Rom. 5th and 6th chap ters. Preaching at 11 o'clock by Bro. Gibson from Liberal. Quite a number have been suc- cesful in gathering plums in the hills the past week. We understand the Holiness people were to hold an all-day meeting in Mr. Willkin's grove the 4th of July. Owing to abreak-downaiLthe ice plant at Liberal, they cut the orders down for ice from the dif ferent places, but what we did re ceive was used to good advantage and appreciated by all. The picnic held at Mr. Samuel Prough's was quite an enjoyable success. Fifty-four people were in attendance. Ice cream, lemon ade and cold drinks were served all day. Music, croquet and swing ing were the chief amusements of the day. A bountiful dinner was spread to which every one present gave justice. : Mr. and Mrs. Holland and son from Sharpcreek joined' the pic nicers at Mr. Prough's in the after noon. Wo were glad to meet Mr and Mrs. Holland. As they were strangers to some of us, being Beaver couuty old-timers, they could te manv interesting narra tives. A number of people from this vicinity spent the 4th at Liberal. T ipv rennrt a eood time, the en tertainments being alight. Mr. F. A. Smith returned from Mineola. Kans.. to spend the 4th with his family. It is T. D. Ervin's intention to move his well drill to the XI ranch the latter Dart of the week. He has two wells to drill there. Obern Observing. , 23 miles Northwest of Liberal. , John Jerman purchased a new header last week. ( M. B. Cooper and family and Rev. A. J.' Murphy wdnt to Lib eral Tuesday to celebrate the Fourth. John Wear came in from Kan sas City Wednesday for a visit with relatives and friends. Claude Davis iost one of his fine horses last Saturday. The cause is unknown. W. T. and John Wear, Coleman Downing and John Schallert were the guests of Macie Jerman Sun day afternoon. 1 There was ouite an excitement last Sunday night when W.. T. Wear's team ran away, leaving the buggy in John Jerman's wheat Geld. Robert and Grace Sloan and Mrs. Buster called on Mrs. M. B. Cooper last Sunday afternoon. Everybody is busy cutting wheat. Will Mixon is enjoying a visit with his father and mother from Oklahoma. Bess M. Odneal left Saturday for Liberal where she Intends to enter the Normal. We wish her success. Downing spent uesday with her mother, Mrs George Rowan.. " Jarrett Convicted After a fair and impartial trial lasting a little over three years, the firm of C. S. We t rust that every. one felt patriotic and gave the good Lord thanks because we have such a good country to lite in. Even though It is dry, we have such hne nights to sleep In, so we awaken refreshed for another clay's work. Did you ever think about our living one day at time? A number of relatives gathered at the Traver home to eat ice cream on the Fourth. The guests were: L, W. Parker and wife, L. S. Parker and wife and I). II. Heath and wife. These gatherings are not as frequent as they ought to be. In the early days the social gatherings of neigtt bors were common; and we seemed to get along as well then as we do now when we can scarcely find time to go to a neighbor's house on an errand. A number from the Traver settle ment went to Hugoton to celebrate the Fourth. We had a nice rain the evening of the third. Mr. Weaden who went to Arkansas about a year ago writes back that not only Is it very drv there, but the nights are so sultry that they cannot get much rest or sleep. He says we ought to be thankful that we have such nights out here. What a pity that the hum of the cream separator is not heard in more homes. Iinkel of the Menonite Church preached on "Co-laborers with God," 1. Cor. 3;9. After which Sister Crothers treated us to i gallons of tine Liberal ice cream on the M. E. Church lawn. At this feast Gertrude Marriage, S. 3. Dodd, E. .E. Dodd, Geo. C. Iinkel, and Catharina E. Hinkel handed in their, respective names for membership in the Seward County Holiness Association, mak ing twenty members received since the June camp meeting. At 8 p. m., Rev. A. M. Gibson preached a spiritual sermon and ascertained that almost every per son present was in the "Canaan Experience." A business meeting was held immediately at the close in which J. S. McNeal. in the current number of the Farmers Mail and Breeze gives a little free advice about western Kansas. He don't picture the prospects any too flat tering but just about hits the nail on the head. He sizes it up in part about this way: It is better to be a land holder but in western Kansas than a rent er on high-priced lands ' back in eastern Kansas or over in Mis souri. It is quite likely that he can 6nd land that will grow alfalfa and if so he will ,have the world by the narrative with a down hill pull.
