THE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT The Liberal Democrat (Successor to The Independent) Th S.Ward County Publishing Company CARL 0. EOOY Editor and Publisher. Published every Friday morning at Liberal, Seward County, Kans, Entered as second-class matter January ri, 11)11. at the uost office at Liberal, Kansas under the Actor March 3, 1H79. "There's so much good In the worst of us, and there's so much bad In the best of us, that It doesn't behoove any of us to speak 111 of the rest 'of ,us. Straight From The Shoulder At the Kepublican primary for the nomination of a man to till the congressional vacancy, there were less than 20 votes cast here for ' J udge Martin of Hutchinson. Se ward Co. declared herself as be ing progressive, and the county's plurality went to Judge Finley of Dodge City. Now the question arises, has Martin grown stronger or better, or more amenable to the wishes of the voters of the district I sinm the dav that Drimarv was hnlrl in this district! We believe not. There has been a manifesto issued from the republican head quarters at Hutchinson, that the party has agreed to compromise and support Martin. Now this matter of "compromising" doesn't go very well in Western Kansas. People here are forced to stand either for or against the ideas on which campaigns are based. This year will be no exception. Martin is a standpat from A to Izzard. As the mayor ot Hutchinson, he was one of the variety who refused to lend his support for any im provements for the town, and it is said that all of the sidewalks built there during the Martin adminis tration, were built by agreement of the property owners on the various streets where the improve ments were needed. Martin is tied up hand and foot with Billy Morgan who is the real King Bee of the old time regular or stand pat republicans in this district. It is indeed doubtful if even the wiley republican campaign mana gers will be able to force this "compromise" stuff down the throats of the progressive voters in the district. Reno county, where Neeley is probably better known than in any other county, will probably give him a majority greater than that of last year. When those who know a man best rally to his support, it would ap pear that this should be a pretty good indication of the relative ability of the two men who are now asking for the election. Read George Neeley's platform in this issue of The Democrat. It is worth while, and is based on the needs of the Seventh District. The newest thing for the city in the way of a public improvement will be the installation of some sort of tire fighting equipment that will be adequate to the needs of the town. The matter of hay ing such a truck made here was presented to the council at the meeting last week, and was taken under advisement at that time. As it now stands, the equipment . is not in such shape that it may be taken to a tire with any speed. The cost of maintaining the new apparatus will also be light. On the other hand, there will be some question as to whether or not this matter should have preference in the list of expenditures. The Lib eral Auto Supply Co. has offered to take the city warrants at the legal rate of 6 percent. If other things are equal, we believe that the job of building and equiping the truck should be given home people. The labor on the job will amount to more than half of the cost of the new truck, and if pos sible should go to our own men. Hinglewood is to have a new water works system. The mater ial has already been unloaded there for the new plant, which is to be completed, by March 1, 1912 Farm Loans S. W. Snn It is indeed pleasant to see how the street lights are gradually be ing extended to the residence part of the city. During the past week new lights have been placed on South Grant Ave. It is said that there will be several new lights placed on South Sherman Ave. in the near future and an extension is now beiDg planned for several other streets in the residence sec tion. The street lights have proven popular, and will probably con tinue to grow in popularity, as the present idea is carried out more extensively on the two streets above named. The editor of the Hooker Ad vance talks -like a married man these days. In his editorial col umns last week, he said with refer ence to one of our mentions of the suffrage situation here: "We might remark that when Hooker becomes inoculated with the virus of equal suffrage rights, we intend to turn the steering wheel of the moral guide over to someone else and t 1 e to the brush." Yes, on the whole, it really sounds as though Bro. Heibert were married The town of Meade has recently begun to put on city airs. They now have a telephone directory for the patrons of the system there and the telephone exchange is ad vertising in the papers in order to induce the subscribers to call by number. It is hoped that the good people there may be able to learn this intricate bit of business before the close of 1912. For Sale By the owner twenty-four lots in block live of the Terwilliger addition.
