Commonwealth: W. F. White, the en terprising and indefatigable passenger agent of the A.. T. Jfc. S. F. railroad company, ha devised a scheme and per fected arrangements by which through tickets are now sold at most stations on the line of A., T. A S. F. to near ly all the minor station of the east. By the old coupon system, ticket were old only to important places, and the traveler had to pay local fare from such point or boy a through ticket to some large station beyond his destine tion and stop off at an interme diate station, thus paying for more than he received. All this trouble, annoy. ance and loss ia obviated by the new system. . Passenger are ticketed clear through to their destination. The form of ticket ia extremely simple, and easily understood, and the most careless travel er will be less likely to be diverted from his route than by the attempted study of the complicated form heretofore in use. The Santa Fe ia always foremost in in augurating - improvements which are likely to contribute to the convenience and profit of the traveling public. A aarew aUae-ster. One day laat week C. The committee have authentic information from every section of the slate, that the prohihitory law is being very generally observed ; that in many counties there are abso lutely no violations of the law, and that throughout Uie entire slate the law is a success. The committee is confident that in a few town where the law is be ing violated, convictions will folio pending prosecution, and that soon pro hibition will be absolute, even in the larger cities. The committee deny that there is any reaction in public senti ment, but on the contrary that public sentiment is growing in favor ol the law. Notes af Travel. Garnett is improving this season. The late burnt district is being built up with good brick and stone buildings. The hotel are being improved ; the Baptists are just completing a new church ; the Methodist are building an addition and tower to theirs ; the United Presbyterians are preparing to build a new edifice, and there are a number of new residences going up. The prospect of a new rail road, is creating some excitement in town and country. The farmer around are fighting weeds and grass with a will, Ottawa is a beautiful little city. Her broad streets, fine residences and bcauti- ful tree attract the attention of the traveling public at once. The business street Is adorned with a number of fine two and three story blocks. There are some substantial improvements going on now. The farmers in the vicinity are complaining of the almost constant rain, Some of the corn on the low lauds is really drowned out. . Williamsburg is having a mineral well excitement. Rev. S. E. Pendleton has leased the well and proposes to erect buildings and invite the afflicted to the healing waters. Thus one by one our ministers are being drawn off into secu lar matters. I hope they may make money, and keep out of trouble and save themselves from the love of "filthy lucre." C. R.R. What Emporia Needs. In view of the very patent fact that Emporia cannot hope to maintain her present degree of prosperity without some permanent manufacturing interests which will afford employment to her present population and invite accession thereto, and calling to mind that a can ning factory has been frequently men tioned in connection wtth the prospective industries of the city, we take pleasure in reproducing what is said by a Chili cothe correspondent of the Ohio State Journal in relation to an establishment of that kind located at the above men tioned place : "A new feature in industry here is worthy of note. D. W. Archer & Co one year ago in the grocery business, corner of Town and Fourth street, Co lumbus, are now here extensively en gaged in the lruit canning business. They began late last year, and did not do much more than make an experimental effort, although t an extent sufficient to warrant a vigorous prosecution of the work this year. They have had about fifty boys and girls making cans all the spring, and now haven stock of over one million. They have about 150 acres of peas, 50 of beans, 50 of pump kins, 400 of sweet corn, 200 of tomatoes, and expect to handle many thousand bushels of ber ries ot various kinds, of which portions of this county abound. During the ac tive or packing season, they will employ fully 800 band. They receive their sheet tin by the car-load, and all the work, even to the making of their packing-boxes, is done on their own grounds. Last year they shipped fifty -five car-loads, thirteen of which were blackberries, mainly to the Chicago market. Going hurriedly through the buildings where all this work is going on, I confess I was astonished. It looked to me as though our friends must have an army contract, and all to be ted on canned fruit. With no ill luck they, will ship 200 car-load out of thia city thia year." Everything, it seems to us, point to the feasibility of such an industry in Emporia. We are in the midst of a superb fruit country, the product of which in plentiful years goes to waste by the wagon-load; all sort of vege tables grow in this vicinity in the greatest abundance ; we have the very best facil ities for transportation and the towns and cities and mining camp of Colora do and New Mexico afford a prime market for tons of the class of goods in question. The New ha again and again called the attention of our capitalist and bus! ness men to the necessity of establishing permanent industries in this city which will afford employment to labor and thus stimulate trade in all of its branches, and we earnestly hope that another season will not be allowed to pass with out taking some decisive step ia this direction. Let us have a canning fac tory by next spring, by all means. Three or four car loads of St. Louis beer are transferred from the Missouri Pacific to the Santa Fe almost every dsy at the junction. It generally goes to Dodge City and other towus in the western part of the state. The Hartford News. EDITED BT "JINGO." Tucrsdat, June 23.
