Mr. and Mrs. Judd visited at bwler Tuesday. The County Commissioners are is session this week. A few of the assessors have made their returns for 1900. The case against the boys was continued to April 12. Doc Anshutz was transacting business in the city Monday. E. A. Twist and family came up from Beaver county Monday. W. T. Bruce and wife were up from the Cimarron last week, Spring crops are going into the -ground at a lively rate this week. Paul S. Woods came in Friday evening and went to Liberal Saturday. Rev. Robinson went to the Cim arron Monday to hold meetings this week. D. L. Baker was in town Sunday and Monday and took home a new buggy. W. J. Woodard was absent last week visiting his old home in Gray county. Rev. Robinson came in from Dodge Saturday to hold services Sunday. Miss Bertha Campbell returned to her home in Emporia Monday morning. Dennis Barragree and wife were pleasant callers at this office last Saturday. Next week we will have another article relative to that dreaded dis ease among cattle black leg. Judge Selvidge arrived home from Missouri last week. He brought a car load of cows along with him. ueo. Kdwards, or Artesian, was in town Monday, and drove home in a new wagon he had just purchas ed. Mrs. Fowler, of Fowler, Ks., was in Meade Friday and Saturday of last week selling books, etc. She met with good success. R. B. Campbell went through Meade last week on his way to Garden City, where he had purchas ed several hundred head of calves. Rev. Enyeart and wife returned to Meade Saturday night, after three weeks absence, in the eastern part of the state. Di. Fee returned Tuesday morn ing from Liberal where he had been called to see John Odell, who is not expected to live. John Harper, of Cimarron, was in town last week with Mr. McCauley in his interest in the suit against Wm. Miles et al. S. B. Weir, sheriff of Beaver county, was in Meade Friday seeing the ex-sheriff, Mr. Reas, and trans acting other business. W. C. Osgood Jr. is papering the room adjoining the pool room of M. Rosenberry, who contemplates starting a confectionery. We have been requested to pub lish a letter from Luke Davis, who is with the 44th U. S. V. I., in the Philippines. It appears in another column. A number of Meade county high school pupils took the examination last Saturday. As to the result, we look to Mr. Porterfield to report for the educational column. W. N. Shamhart returned Tues day night from Richmond, Kas and will reside permanently on the McLean nlace. His family will shortly move to Meade also. Last Saturday night a number of young people gathered at Miss Campbell's," from where they went to the home of Miss Jennie Kessler, where they spent an enjoyable even ing. D. ' ' Henry Burford, one of Fowler's popular merchants, was in Meade Tuesday. A number of the Woodmen from distance attended the meeting Monday night, among whom we' noticed Sam Newby, Nin Ellis and om Novinger. v Jess McKinney and Fred Hamil ton, of Ashland, were in town this week, jess contemplates going into the well-drilling business with ay Ellis. A meeting will be held at the Court house, immediately following the close of the republican county E. C. Kilborn circulated a petition convention, Saturday, April 7, i9oo: ast week' signed by a large number of town people to have the case against the boys dismissed. The sympathy of the public seems to be in their favor. N. R. Bishop says that he has tried the receipe for killing prairie dogs, which was published in this paper several weeks ago, and that it was not satisfactory. He says the dogs are just as lively as ever. H. A. Busing .was bridge business with the county Commissioners Tuesday. They have advertised for bids for the building of the Cimarron river bridge, the contract to be let on April 28. Mrs. Geo. Perry was ' a pleasant caller at this office last Monday. She informed us that she would soon return to her home in Wyoming, but would visit her brother, Luther, who is sick in Kansas City, on her return home. ' At the'dini-ckes. Sunday was a beautiful day and1 services were well attended at both churches. Rev. Enyeart preached at the M. E. church1 and Rev. Rob inson at the Baptist church, morning and evening. The City Election. At the city election last Monday the regularly nominated ticket was elected, with one exception. J. M. Wood was elected to the council instead of E. Rosenberry. It is now Alderman Wood. The day was pleasant and a large number of ladies went to the polls. Attention! for the purpose of initiating due steps for a fitting observance of Memorial day. A cordial invitation is hereby extended to all to join in this movement, and an especial in vitation to the ladies. Signed by sixty citizens. Married- Last Monday evening at the resi dence of Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Tudd, Mr. Ed H. Miles and Miss Minnie Green, both of Fowler, Kas., were transacting united in marriage by Rev. Enyeart. Only a few intimate friends were present to witness the ceremony, Mr. Geo. Fowler and Miss Lizzie Krisle being in attendance as grooms man and bridesmaid. Mr. Ed Miles is a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Miles, of Fowler, and Miss Green is the daughter of Mr, and Mrs. W. W. Green, of the same place, and both young people have a host of friends who wish them much joy and prosperity through life. The happy couple returned Tues day morning to Fowler, where Last Monday night Chas. We are not inclined to think that "thugs and boot-leggers" controlled the city election last Monday. If there are any boot-leggers m this city we don't know them, and as for thugs, up to the present time we have been unable to locate any of this class of humanity. We don't think that any one should say that it was controlled by thugs and boot-leggers. It is an injustice to our better class of citizens. There are too many people who always tell other people what they should do to be better, but don't to think they should do the same things themselves to be better. residence had been the groom, and they at once entered upon the duties of housekeeping. A young man by the name; of Lanham,- from the Beaty ranch' in the southwest part of the county, came in Tuesday and reported that a horse, saddle and bridle had been stolen from the ranch the night be fore. A warrant was sworn out and Sheriff Jones and Lanham started for Garden City. They recovered the horse and saddle, but the thief was not captured. It was supposed to be a fellow going under the name of Broadhorn who escaped from a Texas jail. Santa Fe Monitor. W. J." The County Commissioners, H. E. Hayden, John Conrad and John Innis, are in town this week attend ing the regular session of the board. Meade county tax-payers can con-1 gratulate themselves on having as good a set of commissioners as can be found in this state or any other. Every one of them are men of the utmost integrity and in no manner could they be pursuaded to do any thing otherwise than in the interest of the tax-payers of Meade county. H. E.
