Mr. Workintine's sister is working for Mrs. C. J. Hayes at present. T. E. Boyd is touring this burg in the interest of the Red Cross. L. S. Hatch and wife are the hap py parents of a little baby girl. Pete Kinsinger has been working with a force of teams on the road iast week. Stephen Miller, the section fore man, recieved six large rolls of wov en wire fenco which is to put up long the right of way to keep Bas inger's soeep off the track. David L. Basinger writes from, "Somewhere in France" that he is enjoying good health also Europe is about a century behind America and tbat he is glad that he is an Ameri can. Mertilla Township The farmeas are wishing for rain. The Sunday school at Liberty Knole is growing steadily but we need YOU. Miss Evah Fish has secured the chool in the Northcott District. Rev. Dent, of Plains, preached Sunday afternoon at district 62, his sermou was good and enjoyed by all. He will preach again June 9th. Mr. Northcott and Mr. Taylor Boyd were appointed to solicit funds for Red Cross Diive May aoth to 27th. Mrs. Gum and Mrs. Perkins cal led on Miss Jenkinson. Mr. and Mrs. Gowdy and Mies Tattent took dinner at the Fish some Sunday and attended preach ing service. Miss Lorena Bird, has just return ed from a visit with ber uncle, El wood Bird of Pratt. A number from this community attended R. N. A. lodge at Plains, Tuesday night and assisted in put ting on the degree work. Mertilla Red Crofs Auxiliary is doing some very creditable woak. The Blue Bird May 24tb and 25th Will Raise Rates Tbe Light Co. is making' every effort to give good service, and everything considered, there is little, if any. fault to be found. After due consideration, the Light Company bas decided to make a small raise in their rates and beginning June first, the minimum will be $1.50 The raise comes as tbe result of tbe big advance in the price of pow er oil, and all other materials necessary tor the making of e!ec tricity. Mr- and Mrs. Clark Leach, of San Diego, California, arrived in Meade last week, and are now at the home of F. W Fick and wife. The Blue Bird Matinee, Satur day May 25. The weather has been uncom fortably warm for the past few days. Miss Ann Ott, who is teaching in Pratt Public Sabools, spent Saturday as a guest of Miss Gwladys Jones. F. S. Sulivan left Sunday for Pittsburg, Kansas where he goes as a delegate, to K, P. Lodge. Remember tbe Blue Bird, next Friday and Saturday at the opera house. Roy Vangieson left this week for a ten days stay with his sis ter, Mrs. Geo. Creek, at Byron Oklahoma. Mrs. Ida York, who is now night operator at Plains, was in Meade a few days of this week visiting ber mother Mrs. Lizzie Noland. Mr. W. Orelup is the new sec ond trick operater at the Rock Island, and with bis family is now comfortably located in tbe John Wehrle property. Ed. Layton left tbe first of the week for Woodward Okla homa, where he will take charge of his father's farm in tbe ab sence of a brother who will shortly go to war, Mrs. Ralph M. Peed, of San Diego, California, arrived in Meade last week for a stay with her grandmother, Mrs. Allen Miss ElnoraRedmond left last Friday for her home in Walnut Kansas, after closing a success ful year in the Meade school. Her friends will be glad to know that she bas been employed for another year. County Clerk Pressly and wife are enjoying a visit from Mr. Pressly's mother, Mrs, Anna E. Pressly, and , sister, Miss Jane Presslv, both of Erie Pennsyl vania. Mrs. Pressly and daught er are enroute home from a win ter's stay in Oakland, California Miss Ethel Barnhart, accom panied by her mother, left Sun day for Erie Kansas. Miss Barnhart was a teacher in tbe Meade schools this year and has been employed for anotberterm. Wm. Merkle, of Fowler, was in Meade Tuesday on business. He recently purchased the Dew ey ranch, south of Meade, and wat returning to his home in Fowler, after spending several days on bis recently acquired possession. Wheat in all parts of county 11 needing rain. Many fields are now in bad condition, but the benefit a good rain would do would be surpr'iHing. Moisture must come to make tbe row crops safe, alio.
