i 0 y:. THE GREAT METROPOLITAN DAILIES. To the Editor of Ths Advocate. A glance at any of the New York dailies shows that they are run for reve nue only that a position involving prln clple Is seldom taken save with an eye to the financial outcome. They all cal culate shrewdly In dollars and cents be fore taking any position on a public question, and are more often right than wrong only because In the long run honesty pays better. A careful reading of the principal New York dailies yes terday and to-day shows that not one of them dare take an honest stand for the rights of labor as against the demands of capital. The World attempts to play the part of the demagogue and pretends a sympathy it dare not carry out to a log! cal conclusion. The Press, for the sake of the Republican party, makes a de mand for arbitration with a view to take the men back and thus avoid the general revolt among laboring people all over the Union, which It fears will bring utter de struction to Its party. The Sun is the bitterest enemy of labor of any paper published in the east It demands for capital the right to deal ia human labor according to the' law of supply and de mand, Irrespective of any moral question involved. It is a sad commentary on our Christian civilization that every law on the subject has been framed to enforce the right of capital to do as It pleases in Its trafficking with human souls, that the entire militia and police power local, state and national must be called out to enforce that right This moral question involved will not down, and under the banner of the People's party will be thrust again and again upon the atten tion of the 'public Every just right, both of property and men, should be carefully guarded, but If this position be taken then capital cannot be allowed as at present to ignore the moral right of human beings to receive an honest day's pay for an honest day's labor. The ques tlon of what Is an honest day's pay for any class of labor should be settled peace fully and authoritatively, but by neither the despotic greed of capital on the one hand nor the angry, unreasonable de mand of labor on the other. It is the duty of our government, if It be Chris tian In Its laws, to protect labor in its rights as well as capital, to treat both with equal Justice. The justice of this position cannot be ignored, and no power, even of arms, can'long enforce In a free country the demands of capital while i'g norlng those of labor. The people must demand new laws. One danger all good citizens should foresee and avoid, which Is the taking of extreme positions on either side. The people of the east misunderstand and misjudge the political uprising In the west and south which has culminated in the People's party, and onHhe other hand the members of the People's party mis judge the people In the east. Educa tion and a correct interpretation of pub lic needs, will bring all fair-minded citizens together, and then, let us hope, the conflicts otherwise sura to result, ill be avoided. God grant that this may re Bult before the torch of popular indigna tion shall fire our whole national struc ture. Sikcxbttas.
