TfflB ADVOCATE AND NEWS.
PUBLIC OPINION
IN
Wichita Eagle (Rep.):
TVtrh montf rh1tnarlaa arA
UtNtnAL. being writtea about Pop
ulism. Populism has a way of crawling
out of the hearse at the very graveyard
and biting the undertaker, which should
not now be forgotten.
Wichita Commoner (Pop.): Kansas
must give to Nebraska the honor of
being the leading Populist State In the
Union, that State having elected a Pop
ulist Governor three terms in succession.
Wichita Beacon (Dem.): The Topeka
Capital prints an appeal for aid to the
destitute and a eulogy on the DIngley
bill on the same page. It Is very nat
ural that distress and high taxes should
go hand In hand ever, though the Cap
ital did not Intend it that way..
Clay Center Dispatch (Pop.): Every
Interview of the kind J. Mack Love and
other prominent Democrats are, giving
out these days means Just that much of
an addition to their stock of regrets for
1900. The co-operation propositions
may be coming from the Democratic
ide about then.
Olathe Tribune (Pop.): Senator Hanna
admits that the Dingley tariff is a fail
ure as a revenue getter, and, therefore,
tea and coffee will have to be taxed and
the war stamp act continued. The elec
tions are over and the people will now
have a taste of the latest there Is In
practical republicanism rigidly applied
to their pocketbooks.
Medicine Lodge Index (Pop.): An
old-fashioned Populist campaign, says
John Breidenthal, will carry the party in
Kansas to success in 1900. He does not
believe in catering to new fads every
year, and he attributes the Indifference
of farmer Populists to the fact that too
little attention was given during the
campaign to vital reform issues. Mr.
Breidenthal's head Is level in this in
stance. Parsons Eclipse (Pop.): The rural
Populist vote in this county that stayed
at home on election day is now being
heard from. In the vast majority of
cases it was over-confidence in the
chances of the success of the fusion
forces, and as they are now regretting
their action, they will have an oppor
tunity to regret It more and more dur
ing the coming two years of a Republi
can administration.
Marlon Times (Pop.) : When the
facts a3 to the management of the cam
paign are made public, Chairman Riddle
will receive the credit due him for hav
ing conducted the campaign with the re
sources at his command financially cir
cumscribed within extremely narrow
limits with good Judgment and skill,
wisely aggressive, and always In a spirit
of fairness and honor In contrast with
the bribery, duplicity and falsifying of
the "peculiar genius" on the other side.
Spring Hill New Era (Rep.) : Senator
Hanna believes that some features of
the war tax must be made permanent
Our larger military establishment, oui
Increased navy and the necessity of
maintaining both military and naval
protection in new and distant quarters,
will be an expense until such time as
these possessions may be made to yield
sustaining revenues. That's It! There
Is nothing in the expansion business to
the ordinary man but increased taxation
to support a large standing army to
keep in subjection a lot of half-breed
natives.
Mound City Torch of Liberty (Pop.):
To-day word Is brought by the dailies
Chat another bank under the "best bank
ing system the world ever saw," at Em
porta, has had its doors closed. And at
lift closing It is found that over four
teen thousand dollars of the money
gathered from the people in the form of
taxes waa tied up in it, also that officers
of the bank are bondsmen for this
money, and also that the president of
the bank Is a heavy borrower. Of course
the circulating notes issued from this
bank will be made good by the govern
ment, but the depositors will have to
take "pot luck" and get what they can.
Clay Center Dispatch (Pop.): The
boast of the Republicans in the late
campaign that they were the only pa
triots in this country ought to have de
feated them if there had been no other
reason for It It was the most con
temptible campaign cry that was ever
raised when it 13 remembered that the
party was actually forced Into the fight
with Spain. Even after the destruction
of the Maine, President McKinley and
other party leaders contended that
"Spanish honor" could be relied upon to
make proper reparation and do what
was right and honorable. Every neces
sary and Important war measure was
heartily supported by all political parties
in both houses of Congress, but this fact
did not deter Republican orators and
papers from braaenly boasting that It
was a "Republican war" and denouncing
the members of all other parties as ob
structionists. ,
WaKeeney Independent (Pop.): A
political party without a party news
paper is like a Bhip without a rudder.
This is proven by the experience of the
reform forces both in Trego and Gove
counties. Prior to the starting of the
Independent in this county, Trego was
considered reliably Republican. And
even the most 'sanguine could not have
contemplated the change of condition
that has taken place in Gove county.
For years it has been a strong Repub
lican county, and while the Advocate
la yet less than a year old, the fusion
ticket this year was elected hands down.
Brother Harrington Is entitled to con
gratulations for his noble work.
Kingman Journal (Pop.): Brown of
Pratt drew a railroad bill practically
the same as the Campbell bill of 1S91,
the same as the Householder-Leedy bill
of 1893, the same as the real Harris bill
of 1897, yet each arrogated to his own
bill absolute right and condemned the
other, when they were all alike. The
people began to read. They became dis
gusted and voted listlessly, or stayed
away from the polls. The good legisla
tion of 1897 could not rouse them. Mc
Nall could not They had a reason to
feel as they did. The party stood de
feated in the State election by 30,000
majority. The repeal of the metropoli
tan police law helped them. The dec
laration for a constitutional convention
made votes. Stanley's wishy-washy
campaign made us votes. That lethargy
will continue until after this session,
when the spirit. of the people will again
assert Itself. The Legislature elected
will fall, and in the comparison that
will follow Stanley will be burled deeper
by a full vote of all the parties than we
were defeated by a stay-at-home vote.
This election was n landslide. It was
a failure to vote. It makes no change
In sentiment.
Lincoln Beacon (Pop.): J. Mack Love,
Atwood, Overmyer, et al., resoluted
against the Republican party for twenty
five years when the only Issues they
could think of or trump up were, first,
the fact that they "wanted In," and
afterward the prohibition question; and
during all those years the Democratic
party didn't amount to as much as the
gob of mud on the end of a cow's tail,
so far as being a legitimate factor In
Kansas politics was concerned. For
twenty-five years its existence was the
only excuse the Republican party had
for existing, and kept It alive on war
Issues. If the Democratic party the
"secession," "ku klux," "Bourbon" bug
aboo which it always was until the revo
lution of '96 had been allowed to dis
band when the war ended, the Industrial
Issues which the Greenback party first
championed would have swept the Re
publican party out of power and them
selves Into dominance long ago. And
now comes J. Mack Love, since the elec
tion, and unmasks the whole Taubeneck,
lim Weaver, Marion Butler conspiracy
to destroy the Populist party. The fact
Is, that the party spirit of Populism was
never stronger than now.
