MILES. Tho loud ringing of a bell called me from a melancholy meditation, one gloomy morn ing in April. I bad been sitting for fome time in my room dreaming of days gone by, when I had been a happ3' child, a gay maiden and ahappybrido. But those daj-s were gono to come back to me never more. I thought of a bright-eyed boy who had played i.bout 1113' knee in those remombered days, whoso prattle and laugh were to mo my world. Outside of the pleas ant hours I passed with my beautiful boy my time was occupied by keeping my husband's account. I go back now to the last time I went to his desk. It had been my custom to go to the desk at about ten in the morning. On this partic ular morninc I had gone to the desk as usual, taking care to see that baby was comfortable before I left him. As I entered the office room I noticed nothing ont of place or dis arranged in any way. I had only sat a few moments at tho desk when I felt or heard a strange awful nise, a horrid burning in my head; and 1 remembered no more. Three weeks from that day I aoke to find that I was deaf and dumb and that my baby and my husband were mis-ing. I was able to walk about the room and pick up hero and there a broken toj" or some little trinket which had been my darling's. M3' nurse and physician wrote on n slate and told mc I had had a narrow escape from death, that 1 had been shot in the head, and that it was quite probable th.t I would never hear nor speak again. 13' first question was to ask where the bab was, and ni3' husband. 1 saw the doctor and nurse exchange glances and by tho movement of their lips I could tell they were consulting each other. I would have given tho world had I possessed it to have spoken to them or to have heard their conversation. Dut speech and hearing were denied mo and I wrote on tho little slate; "Tell mo where 013' darlings arc or 1 shall go mad." I felt nryself grow we-ik and diz7AT as tice was fraud, and that my little boy lived and that I should find him. I began to lay my plane. I went first to my husband's desk and examined everything carefully. I tried to recall everything that passed between my husband and myself previous to going into the office room. I could not remember that he had looked in the least out of humor or excited. My eyes wandered about the room when suddenly I saw tho corner of an envelope peeping from beneath the carpet. I sprang to snatch it out, when a picture fell from it, then I noticed a letter inside. I took it out, unfolded it and read a letter in a delicate fern nine hand. It ran; 'AIy Dearest Paul: "This is probably- the last time you will ever hear of me; I write to say, good-bye. Why is it we have to live separated? You don't love her; she is not yours, nor never will be. I alono am the one to love you and make you happy. But as you still cling to her on ac count of the boy, I must bid you good-bve, my darling, tho' it breaks my heart. Should anything ever happen to you or to her I shall haveyour little child. "I sail tomorrowf or London. Farowell. Anna." My fingers dropped the paper as though it had burnt them. Great God! My hus band false to me, and I be so blind. I picked up the picture , Oh! such eyes, such lips, such hair, my eyes never saw a fairer face. Had that beautiful viper taken my little child, and had she put the cruel sea between our faces? Tho thought was maddening. I should go to London. I called my nurse and informed her that I was going to take a trip to London and she would begin packing at once. In a few weeks I was snugly fitted up in a little room in London. I went out every day, I went everywhere. I was looking for a face, one I knew nothing could erase from my memory. One day I was visiting an Art Gallery, and in looking over tho pictures I recognized tho face of my dear little boy. Oh! Joy beyond measure, he lived and I should again feel his little arms encircle my neck. I mado inquiries as to whose child ho was and the students told me he was the child of a wealthj' widow living in London. Could they give me her name? No, but tho lady would bo at the place on Wednesday at two oclock, if I would call I could have tho pleas ure of seeing her. replied that I should call. I drove back to my rooms and sat down to think over the past events. Could I but find my boy and get my speech and hearing. Tho latter seemed hopeless. While the tears trickled down my wan cheeks and I mourned for my lost loyo and tho days of happiness that I knew were lost forever, and the crushed leaves of a mistaken trust were lying dream lessly over a heart that wa3 broken. Ah! What was that? A sound? Yes, my reverie was broken bv a dim clamorous noise. Yes. Oh Joy! it was really the sound of a bell and no dream. A loud nois3 bell. I stood up half paralyzed with hope and fear. The door burst open and Xursc rushed in frantically, grabbing mo around the waist and jerking me out of the room and gasping "Fire!" I tried to mako a noise but nry poor tongue was dumb. I found myself in tho streets surrounded by a lot of frantic women and children. I never noticed the angr3' flames licking up tho building, but my' oyes peered nto the crowd of strange faces about me. Suddenly there was a terrific yell and every body rushed toward a clump of something white lying still upon tho pavement. I saw a womans form lifted and a beautiful dead face was held toward me. Groat Ileavens! it was Anna's face. But whero was my bab3? Why had sho not him with her? I looked wildly about mo for a child that might be 1113' own. I heard a gruff voice of one of the fireman say; "Here is the bab3 all safe but his mother is quite dead." I turned to where tho man stood, holding the little fellow in his arms. I went up to him and held out 11:3 hands. It was my baby, lie looked pale and weak and tho lips lisped; "Dat is my aser mamma." I screamed and snatched my bab', I called him once more by name and pressed him to my bosom. I could talk, 1 could hear, I had found my baby, I cared for nothing now only to go back to 2?scw York and carry my darling. I heard only that tho beautiful cruel woman had leaped from her window to cs capo tno flames and was instantly killed While I was searching for her sho was living in the Fame building with my own child. I took m3' baby home with me and a content 01 1 WBRBN MORTGAGE Al TRUST CO., CAPITAL, $100,000. Farm Mortgages, No Delays. Interest at Lowest Rates.
