WOMM AND HOME.
REPLY TO A JOURNALIST'S CRITI
CISM OF THE FAIR SEX.
Amusements for Little Convalescents A
Creole Brother's Advice "Womr.n's In
dividuality Different "Ways of Crowing:
Old Titled Englishmen Homo Hints.
A man down in Hartford, who probably
introduces himself as "a journalist," is terri
bly and pitiably ignorant of this fact Ho
sprcatcd forth the other day in quite a har
angue of which this is a portion:
'This apartment of th9 household will
bo found an interesting locality by those
young ladies of the present time who are de
voting themselves to novelties. Triiilo it is
true that the rolling pin, in red plush dis
guise, bos ventured into tho parlor, it does
not signify that it is all there is of interest in
the kitchen from which it came. There are
several art iclcs of usefulness Li a well reg
ulated kitchen to wliich our 3"oung ladies
thould be introduced, before their 'cardb are
filled.1 A cotillon with a cooking range for
a partner, a pan of biscuit and joint of beef
in the sot, would prove most enjoyable; a
waltz around tho floor iith a mop handle,
mop en train, would bring tho roses to the
chec!r; a schottibche a la washboard de soap
bubblo party would bo 'awfully good;' whilo
a polka mazurka with vegetable dinner ac
companiment would place the laurel crown of
usefulness firmly upon tho brow of tho wives
of tho generation just stepping acioss tho
threshold. An exploring expedition to search
for the Lite-hen should Ik; formed in each house
about 0:30 a. m.'
Now this is all very 'well for a man that
likes that .sort of thing, but in words like
unto his own, '-It won't w ash." It is not gal
lant, to say tho least, and worse than that, it
is not honest. I would like to ask the man a
few questions, first, of course, stipulating
that he drop all old habils and tell Iho truth.
I'd like to ask him if he ever took a full quar
ter's scions in dancing these same schot
tisches and walt7cs and cotillons and polkas.
If ho had personally enjoyed what he asserts
to be so enjoyable; if he had ever in thissamo
way bi ought roses to his cheek; if lie had
proved for himself thatsuch amusements
were awfully good;" if ho had ever, of his
own accord, taken similar exploring c.pcdi
tions at (5&0 a. in.
I would like to ask him if ho would think it
truly reasonable of any desirable young wo
man to i ef use the offer of hL protection and
loj-ally and general allegiance unless he could
provelhat it was ltis daily habit, as well as
his desire, to always black his own boots, to
keep the ashes from accumulating in front of
the furnace door, to shave himself, to do up
his own laundry bundle, to walk invariably
tohLsoIlico and to always be ahead of his
mother's request to se about spring doors and
awnings. I'd like his bold n&scrtion that
nothing pleased him so much as to spend tho
hour from (5 to 7 a. in. in bending a back over
an empty stomach pulling -needs in tho front
walk, rakingJhe rubbish from besido tho car
nage licuse, or octtcr yet, currycomumg
Uilly tho horse.
I'd like to know iflio won equally as read'
to obey his father's lightest law and save tho
old gentleman as many steps as his sister or
tho girl that he has in mind, w hen he so se
verely maligns tho sex, is to obey and servo
her mother.
With ono more question I think I'd bo will
ing to let him go, on condition he'd never say
ruch a thing again. I'd like to ask him v hat
Und of a young v.oman, and above all what
kind of an old one, arc his especial admira
tion v.heth'T ho likes best of all the gills
whoso finger nails aie broken off by contact
with that same aforesaid ''mop en train;"
w ho has felons from pulling clinkers from out
tho grate; who gets all hot and red faced
from .scrubbing and doing diskc, and all
Smelly'' from cooking; whether ho admires
most tho old lady with hand like horn, knotty
and twisted wilhj'ears of labor; with tired
old feet that can hardly bear her slender
weight; deep drawn eyes that look as if they
had seen tho sun rie fiom tho woodshed door
for the last sity 3'cars, except on the daj-s
w hen she was too sick to be able to go out
through the wet grass and pickup chips to
cook tho 7 o'clock breakfast by. Whether
he likes liestsuch pictures to dwell upon, or
whether tho-e that please him best are, after
all, tho gill wIiomj linger tips are pink and
whoso nails are bright, who comes down ro-y
and laughing to breakfast at the same lime
he does, and v. ho is as f rcsli as a i ose all tho
day k.)g, and tho snowy haired old lad',
with kind, happy eyes and light hands and
softly stepping .old feet, who has seen a few
of life's pretty things and enjoyed them right
well, andean now give to others tho pleas
ures that others have given to her.
What do you suppose would be the sub
stance of tliis poor, foolish fellow's confession
could wo once got him into the proposed jul
aco of truth, with every door shut? If he
were liko mast men he'd own up like a man
that ho was simply tr ing to bo funny at the
expense of his mother, his sister, his w ife and
women in general. '"P. li. 31."' in Xew York

Thcso figures arc taken from tho census of

Sliangluu is the home of the musquito, being
specially noted for a striped hind called tho
"tiger."' of peculiar ferocity and stinging

wise unpleasant, not to say dangerous, and
not by any means a desirable bedfellow. Sep
