The weary and brain worked statesmen returned to their tasks to lay, having in the interim of adjournment tasted the sweets of the seductive cider ami are now, like giants refieshed on new wine, ready to tackle at this drug store capital me great questions relating to rule and tig ure work the amending of the rules and tiguring out how they shall makeabout S50 per day out of a per diem salary of i'i. It at ways takes the first two weeks to get the haog of legislation, new members must be broken in. They are a 1 il le da.ed at coming to such a metropoli tan place as Topeki and sitting in mahogo ny chairs in a room, the finish alnoe of which tost $130,000. After they get the lay of the house they feel more at home aad the Demosthenian Hood of eloquence begins to llow and the birds take wondtr derful flights of oratory, Then the long concealed cat in the meat bag begins to mew; the steals that have been illy hiddtn are brought out from under their corers and the brassy and brazen legislator com mences his raids upon the treasury. A CIIEIL AJI.VKG YC. If it was not for the uewspaper-3 the buildings of two thirds of our states would be orn down and carried off in chips in members' pockets. Xo dome of a capitol would besafe; but while the papers pre eut a vat amount of corrupt and corrupting legislation, they fail in many instances to procure the affirmative legislation that is so much needed. Take the school bjok ques tion, can anyone give any good rea-on why we have not long since had legislation on this question that would have secured uniformity of school books and n change of text books for a period of five or ten years? The farmers an 1 poor people of this state are being rob bed more methodically, more systemat ic dly and more effectually in the sacred n itnc of education than by the Goulds and the Vanderbdts who have operated their thou-ands of miles or railroads. If our ... . . ... state legislators and the national congress would turn their attention to the education if tho Twtnli' and tlt- nrntection of the people in securing their education, i would be infinitelv better than tinkerim with interstate commerce, something the average congressman knows as much about w "" as transportation on the surface of the moon. The popIe are simply robbed awl plundered by the school book monopoly. There ars five great houses in the coun try that have a monopoly of furnishing the peop'e with the school books. A book that can be printed and furni-hed for ten cents, they charge thirty-five to forty cent?. The state printer Hon T. Dwigiu Thach er, ten years ago olicretl to furnish the school books for the state at 50 per cent elow what we are now paying. Tne Hon. A. T. Sbarpe. of Ottawa, who can give 3 bond for anv amount, offered to do the same. H hy is the loony tnrocgeti every year with these book fiends, aw! with j agents, and with repre-entatires of these great publishing house iaonop.lies?
