Two quite im portent measures were discussed in the senate today without final action being taken, the woman's suffrage matter and the labor question. The latter came up on Senator White's bill requiring eorjKjratious and companies "to .jmy their employes weekly and making nine hours a legal day for labor. Senator Kelly of Sedgwick", moved an indefinite postponement. lie said such a bill was impractical and inerfi cient and could not apply to farmers and farm laborer who will comprise sitty per cent of the state. The bill will probably be defeated. It was received rather coldly by the senate. pithy i:epauti:e. The municipal suffrage bill for women was more warmly received and it is thought it will become a law, though no final action was taken. Some -en able arguments by Senators Blue, Green, and others were made in its favor. Senators Pickler and Hark ness who made a minority report against the bill were presented with boquets by Mrs. Helen M. Gougar, the celebreted fe male suffragist. The following notes passed to Hon. Mr. Pickler with the com pliments of ITelen M. Gougar: '.May the veifume of thee flowers be more lasting than anv intention vou raav have to vote against the pending municipal suffrage bill Plea-e note the fact that history records the names of those with di-honor who have hindered in any way the progress of human liberty, and women are human." A similar note was attached to the bo quet sent Senator Harknes. Seaator Pickler replied: Mrs. Hetea Goujsr "Der Mad.vji: Your Ijeauiifci bo quet received ami also your kind note. Mrs. G. is, in many particulars, the most eloquent woman in America; resembling in many respects Mrs. E.Cady Stanton, who is now too old to actively work on the platform. Mrs. Gougar has recently delivered several lectures here, on Ireland and the Irish, the Right of Woman to Vote, and other sub jects. The audience at each successive lecture has been more interested in her ad dresses. She has doee a powerful work for municipal suffrage for woman. Kicking Emu.
