I night Saturday, all day Sunday, Sun I day night, and Monday till 12 o'clock. the lire swept on, blocks upon blocks, street upon street, and palaces were all rapidly involved in one common ruin. The tiremaii were driven from one station to another, and from one bari caile to another: blocks of granite weighing tons, were burst lo pieces, burning plunk and goods went Hying through the air setting still other blocks and buildings on lire, until the people became frantic and fled for their lives. The same scenes that were witnessed in Chicago, were re-enacted in Boston. The entire heart of the great city is burned out, nothing leit but a mass of smouldering ruins. All the residences of Fort Hill, including Gridlcy, High Learned streets, were destroyed, ren dering thousands of families homeless and destitute. The amount of ground burned over was estimated at two hundred acres at 12 o'clock on Monday, making a grand total loss of upwards of one hundred millions of dollars. The Chicago tire may have been greater in extent, but it is claimed not so great in value. We await anxious ly further news which we expect by to-morrows mail. The Topeka Comir.emccalth and Leavenworth Times, both issued extra-, for the prompt receipt of which they have our thanks. latti:b. The fire was got under complete con trol by blowing up all buildings in its path. Many of the insurance compa nies of the East must go by the board. The total loss to the city is ascertained b estimates of insurance companies to be over ! 100,000,000. Thousands have been thrown out of employment. Chicago sent $100,000 to the suffer ers. The mayors of all the larger cities are telegraphing that they will send aid immediately. Gold went up to 1,33 on Monday, but the secretary of the treasury and other financial men were uing every en deavor to pre. cut a panic. THE HORSE DISEASE. The Chicago Inter-Ocean thinks that ;i rea-onable explanation of the pre- i vuiliivg horse epidemic in the United States may be found in the marked difference in the weather prevailing in the ears 1871 and 1872. The ear 1871 was an exccplionably dry one all over the country, in New England, New Yoik, and more particularly in the northwest. The jcar 1872, on the other hand, is except ionalily wet, with pievailiug northeast and southeast winds. The disease is one that affects thoe organs the throat and lungs most likely to be allcclcd by humidity in the ntmosphcic. The (jnotion is whether it is not produced by the-e extreme atmo-pherie changes which we have lately experienced. At any i ate, it is evidently propagated by at mospheric currents, and nirjjravated, if not supei induced, by uoitheast and southeast winds. CinHiiuli nee of the Ka(.lk. WICHITA GRADED SCHOOLS. For this last trial of jour luck, j ou pay lilty cents, for a conspicuously printed cocr-list of most wondei ful contents, rated at re tail i ice, $1.00. What a temptation! You are promised on the embellished and fanciful cover, "a prize," from ten cents up to two dollars and a half, in gold: marvellous ! Now if you arc in search of information, and haven't cut your wisdom teeth, he sure and buy this last "portfolio." Open it, and ou will find damaged and inferior note paper, in all not worth five cents, ten flimsy, inferior envelopes, never cost ing by the package over ten cents per dozen, making 4 cents; then comes one sheet of blotting paper, rated at two cents, of which there is about the va lue of one-fourth of a mill at retail rateB : one penholder, live cents, which ou can buy am where for two cents get a better article; one steel pen, one pocket almanac, live cents, a simple condensed table, covering not more than three by four inches; one hun dred receipts and fifty popular songs each ten cents for the complication and a map of Chicago, showing the burn ing district, rated at fifty cents. The receipts, map and songs, are now to be found in any daily print or illustrated newspaper, which is sold where print ed, at five cents a copy. As an offset to this, you receive ten cents in scrip. The whole contents are not of money value equal to thirty cents; which amount would purchase better articles elsewhere. Now this is small fry, one may think, and especial ly for newspaper discussion, but it shows how young men and boys may be educated for fraud, and the worst shades of dishonest traflic. These arc the little seeds, which, planted in the habits of the young, dcvelope them as ' gamblers and knaves. This is one of tho-e harmless ways of selling the vic tim, which though practiced by older heads, and in respectable places, has become the banc of honest dealing and commercial security. We really think that every such fraud, w hci cevcr found should be nipped in the bud, or this nation will grow a harvest of swin dlers such as no modern age has pro duced. It is a subject of vital interest, and 2spcciallyas regaids the future of our country, and our name.
