Worthy Brother: In obedience
to instructions from ourState Grange,
requesting the Master to visit all the
counties in our State during the year,
having Granges therein, wo left home
January 26th, arriveil at Emporia
same evening, and spent a part of the
following day in the Secretary's oflicc.
We found Brother Maxson and his
efficient clerk busily engaged in the
work of the oflicc. Notwithstanding
the very large amount of business to
be transacted in the Secretary's office,
there seems to be no hurry or confu
sion. System and order prevail.
The good resulting Horn the work
done at the lust meeting of our State
Grange is now being seen and realized
in the reports from Subordinate
Granges, now coming to the Secre
tary's office. Our domestic Grange
are rallying, and delinquent Granges
that have not made any tcports for six
or twelve mouths, arc now sending in
their reports and paying up their dues.
In the afternoon of the 27th, we
took the train 011 the Atchison, Tope
ka & Santa Fe railroad, wc6t; and run
down to Cottonwood Falls, twenty
two miles, and in the evening wo vis
ited Falls Grange; Bro. S. X. Wood
presiding as Master. This Grange If
iu excellent condition, having at that
time ninety-eight members on the roll,
and other applications in. They have
ft commodious hall, nicely fitted up
with all the paraphernalia necessan
to the perfect working of the Grange.
The next day, tho 28th, wc met the
County Grange of Chaso county.
There was a good turn out. Even
Grange iu the county was represented
but one or two.
There has been a joint stock Grange
tarted in Chase county, but up to tin
present it has not met with the suc
cess that it should in a county having
as many live Patrons in it as arc in
Chase. But they assure us that the
will now go to work in earnest, and
make their agency a success.
On Saturday, at one p. m., wo met
Bazaar Grange in the same county.
This is the Grango W. G. Patton was
Master of which he and five or six
other memberf. attempted to destroy,
and after passiaga resolution dciiounc
ing the Order, sent up the chartcr,aud
declared the Grange dissolved. Bui
ixtccn of the members of the Grange,
not being willing to be thus summari
ly thrown out of the Order, petitioned
the State Grange to restore to them
tbelr charter, which was done, and al
ready the Grauge has increased its
membership by initiations, aborc the

seuters withdrew. Tho old members
told me their Grange was never iu
better condition than now. In this
wc are furnished another example of
the weakness of individual effort iu
trying to destroy any part of our or
ganization, although such efforts will
sooner or later react upon those who
&re engaged in such work.
We have traveled through Chase,
Greenwood, a part ol Butler and Mor
ris counties, and are now at this point
in Mariou county. I will hold three
meetings iu Mariou, and then go to
aarrey, ana so on west, we Una m
our travels, so far, much to encourage
as. Our meetings are well attended,
and in every locality yet visited, there
has been a strong determination mani
fested to push on the work.
The plan of co-operation wc submit
(the same as recommended by the
State Grange) meets with universal
favor, aud I think will bo taken hold
f by onr Patrons, and put into prac
tical application.
The present seems to be an appro
priate time to talk up co-operation.
All seem to appreciate the importance
of immediate action Iu this direction.
The coming-year is the one for work
ia oar Order. Let every deputy, lec
turer and officer of the Stale Grange,
si wen a) every Patron in public or
private .-tation, who desires the suc-
of oar cause, go to work, aud as
sist to the extent of his or her ability,
in bui'ding up and making it a power
for good in our State. I consider the
Order stronger to-day than ever before.
No amount of opposition, either from
without or within our gates, can check
tho progress of our Order.
I will write you again from Wichita
if I stop long enough to do so.
I shall not return before the last of
tho month. Hence any delay in an

Practical education.
A bill has been introduced into the
State Senate by Senator Ilaldcrman,
and has been reported favorably by the
Committee on Education, which con
templates the introduction into the
common schools of the State, of some
of the useful branches of study having
special relation to agriculture aud the
mechanical pursuits. The bill estab
lishes a grado of tca"lierV certificates
which shall embrace such studies, and
as an incentive to teachers who shall
qualify themselves to teach the addi
tional branches iu addition to those re
quired to be taught iu the schools, the
certificate is to run two years. The
followingextract embraces the changes
which this bill makes iu the existing
law :
"Certificates issued by the county
board shall be of three grades first,
second aud third and shall continue
iu force respectively, two years, one
j car aud six mouths, accoidmg to
grade. Those of the first grade shall
certify that the person to whom such
certificate is given is qualified-to teach
orthography, reading, writing, English
grammar, geography, arithmetic, Uni
ted States history, book-keeping, in
dustrial drawing, the elements of en
tomology, the elements of botany, aud
tho elements of geology so far as re
lates tc tho manner of production of
soils and their adaptation to the pur
poses of production. Certificates of
the second and third grades shall cer
tify that tho person to whom such cer
tificate is given is qualified to teach or
thography, reading, writing, English
grammar, geography, aritmctic and
United States history."
This bill docs not require that these
additional branches shall bo taught iu
all, or any of the schools, but leaves it
still optional with tlic districts to in
troduce instruction iu these or other
branches, as they shall sec fit. In oth
er words, the bill docs not change the
courso of study required to be taught
iu the common schools of the State. It
is only intended to stimulate teachers
to qualify themselves to teach in dis
tricts where it shall bo required, some
thing of the characteristics aud habits
of noxious and of useful insects, some
thing of the classification aud of the
laws of growth of plant's, something ot
how to keep common accounts, to make
out bills and draw receipts, how to
sketch the plan of the new building
proposed to be erected, or to make a
sketch of the homestead farm, some
thing of the history and foim of gov
ernment of the State aud of the Uni
ted States.
This bill has been brought forward
to answer iu some measure the demand
growing out of the educational move
ment iu f ho Grauge, that a great deal
of what iu our present plun-i of in
struction is merely disciplinary aud
abstract, shall be dropped, and that iu
its place shall be substituted instruc
tion in what is useful, in what the chil
dren who arc receiving their only edu
cation iu the common schools can
nuke of use iu their occupations iu af
ter life.
It is not pioposed to add to the la
bors of the teacher or the pupil, but to
put iu that kind of instruction which
will be of lively aud useful interest in
placo of the dry abstractions of ad
vanced arithmetic, iu place of that
Kind of dull giammatic.il analysis of
our English which only teaches how
to tear sentences to pieces, but never,
iu practice, teaches how to construct
English sentences, cither iu speech or
writing. Ex.
Capital Grango Social
Capital Grange of Topeka is a live,
piogressivc organization, praciically
demonstrating the usefulness and val
ue of such an organization. This
Grange consists of about 120 members.
In the early part of the winter a course
of ten lectures were announced under
the auspices of Capital Grange. These
lectures are by the best scientific and
educational talent to be found in the
Stale. They are given on each Friday
evening in IJepresentativo Hall to large
and attentive audiences. To defray
the expenses of this course of lectures
the Grange held a social at Union Hall
on the 9th of February. Over 400 were
in attendance. From eight to nine
o'clock vocal aud instrumental music
was the order. From nine to twelve
supper was served of 11 good and sub
stantial character with separate tables
for oysters and ice cream. A rood
quadrille baud discoursed music for
those who wished to take part in the
dancing. The best of feeling prevailed
and a general good time was enjoyed
by all present. Tho net proceeds after
pajing all expenses was over one hun
dred dollars. As much of this fund as
will not be used in defraying the ex
penses of thn Iprturo count, will be
unco; iu adding books to tho library al
ready begun. Katisas Farmer.
The JIainc Farmer says that-a lady,
who always contrives to have plenty
of cg, says, that the best food for
hens is a dough made from meal from
corn aud cobs ground together. Meal
lrom corn alone, or clear corn, is apt
to fatten the hens too much, while
they do not, in order to be kept iu
pood laying condition, require much
concentrated fond.
The Patrons of Ohio are using the
power which they possess, by reason
of numerical strength, in controling
flections of officers of agricultural so
cieties, with the intention of putting a
stop to horse racing at fairs. They
soem to have triumphed thus far, and
it is said that they are to make the
same effort in cverj county where they
are strong enough.
There aro now 320 Granges in tho
Dominion, and liew organizations are
being formed at the rate of over thirty
each month. The number of division
Granges is now thirty-five.
There are over fifty Granges in Da
kota now, and all in a prosperous con
dition. The Order there is stronger
