Palmer in his own post, (Stephenson No. 80,) at Springfield. 111., by judge James H. Matheny, one of the most prominent democrats, and county judge of Sagamon county. The judge had been nominated for post commander, and in declining the honor, on account of a press of business that would prevent him giving the office that care and attention necessary, said: "Now is the time when every true grand army man must stand to his guns. It is a time when every old soldier must show his colors. I am a grand army man and I shall remain so J until I die. The order will never, never, be dissolved. It will continue to grow if not in numbers at leait in interest until I the last soldier is in his grave, and after that our sons will be organized in honor of their soldier fathers. No true soldier will desert his post, and the grand army of the republic is dearer to-day to the heart of the old soldier than ever before.' His remarks were received with deaf ea- iag applause." About ten days ago he was sitting in a hotel in St. Joe, Mo., and a couple of gentlemen sat near him who were talking of things in gener al. His attention, however, was attract ed by one of the gentlemen asking: "Well, have you heard the latest about Colby?" "No," said the other, "what about it?" "Why." said the first speaker, "Colby is now on the move to capture the land office of the district, and it is said that her effort will be successful." "Ha, ha, ha!" laughed the second man "that town Colby has more enterprise than any other town in the west. Every winter she gets up something new, and something that is of consequence to bring settlement and money to herself and county every spring. Have you any lots there?" "Yes," says the first man. "So have I," said the second. Dr. Martin got up at this minute, and introducing himself as a Colby man. told them to come and see us, and they would find that Colby made no false represen tations as to her many advantages. The gentlemen, who were traveling men, informed him that Colby stood sec ond to none as a city in which to do bus iness among traveling men, and that ev ery day her fame as a safe place in which to invest was growing; her aatural ad vantages, her large trade, her railroad probabilities of the future, combined with the fact that she was the eeBter of three railroads now, her iae hotel and numerous large brick buildiacc all rave her great prominence i the aiads of eastern people.
