Reference to any authority shows
plainly that Arizona Is rapidly becom
ing an important factor In the gold,
silver and copper product ion of the
world. The gains of recent years in
the annual output have been laree and
the comments of mining papers, as
well as the mint reports, have all been
highly creditable to the territory.
Nevertheless it is a fact, easily demon
strated, that Arizona has been all too
modestly mentioned In this matter and
that the official figures given by mlut
reports are far too small to adequately
represent either the mining interests
or the mineral output of the terri
tory. The source of Information upon
which the mint reports arc based in a
general way, is believed to be the books
of Wells I-'argo and other express com
panies which handle the principal part
of the bullion produced. What other
sources of Information the mint may
have, of course, Is not ;i public matter,
but at the suggestion of some one in
terested in Arizona, officials of t he
mint requested Dr. PordtO forward an
-tinjate on the gold and silver pro
duct of this year, and his tigures have
been submitted by wire.
fie was seen last evening by r re
porter for The Republican and kindly
consented to the publication of his es
timate. Figures are always more
readily understood by comparison, so
the mint report of the two years pre
ceding are first given:
Mint report Wold production of Ari
zona, 1808, 12,517,000; 18M, $2,598,000,
Mint report-Silver production of
Arizona, 181(8, coin value, 2,!70.800:
Dr. Ford's estimate for 1900 Gold
production, $4,93(1,000; silver produc
tloo, .4,i"0,ooo ounces.
It wlil be at once observed that Dr.
Ford's figures are greatly in excess of
the mint report of last year, in fact,
oo gold, aim ost double. This la ac
counted for bv the fact that the mint
tigures are probably based, for t he
most part, on the reports of trpnspor
t it urn companies. Dr. Ford has util
ized the sani" ource of Information
and in addition has made calculations
ftom his personal intimate knowledge
nttie mines of the territory.
It Is well known that nearly every
big copper vein carries gold and silver
as well. The product of the copper
mines is sent out of the territory as
copper bullion, matte, etc., and the
gold It contains issaved at the refiner
ies. This the t ra sportsttoo com
panies have no knowledge of as to the
amount. Again, the product of many
gold mines Is sent out in the form of
concentrates and only at the reduction
woiks, is the real amount a the gold
product of tbet-e mlt eb km wn, It is
recorded there and probably credited
to the states wherein the reduction
woiksare locat'-d, In many of the
copper mints th I claim I made that
gold exists in sufficient quantities to
pay the cost of -operati ig the mines.
This Is do douljt true and it is a very
plausible explanation for the ditTer
encebetween the figure of Dr. Ford
and the previous mint reports.
Asked if he had made an estimate
on the copper production of the terri
tory, he said that he ha1 given it some
thought and had placed i he 1900 pro
duct at $30,000,000 which he inciden
tally remarked is a good deal of
