made a vicious attempt to cut his
wife's throat early Tuesday morn
ing, at the home of the woman's
parents. They had previously had j
a great deal of trouble, and she j
had left him. Smith left Globe for j
a time, and only recently returned.
It is probable that he would have
killed her Tuesday had not the
pen-knife that he wielded struck
the bone back of the right ear, de
flecting the blade. Nevertheless
the gash in her neck is five or six
inches lone. Smith was arrested
