Mesa Free 1'resM: The new etock bill which has become a lavr gives the grower the right to kill three head of cattle per year, or twenty head sheep or goats for their own use or sale, hut they are not allow -fid to peddle the same in towns where butchers are paying a licence. The new law is very lengthy, and was far from satisfac tory to all interests, but it is con sidered as improvement on the old law. Holbrook Argus: Messrs. Henry Haley and Jack Caufman, two well known ranchers from near Williams, went up the country the fore part of the week to purchase catil.-?; tl;ey returned here last evening and received eighty head of steers from YV. J. Flake and Will Gibson. They also - bought several other small herds which will be delivered to them here about the 15th of next month. Florence Blade: Because spine less cacti contain in fattening quantities both food and water for cattle, the Santa Fe railroad will begin at once exhaustive inquiry into the practicability of planting a portion of the .southwestern, de- erts wiiti tnem. 10. this end an agreement bus been concluded with Dr. Arthur I). Houghton, of Los Angeles, under the terms of which he will at once begin a scientific study of the situation. ''According to official analysis," gays Dr. Houghton, .speaking of the com mercial 'possibilities of the cacti, "the spinelt.i varieties' show a percentage of nutriment next to alfalfa. Spineless cactus is almo-t as good as altalfa and the desert is natural habitat. Water rots it in propagation; all it needs is the lit tle dew that falls of a. morning;, and thus it furnishes abundantly both food and water for cattle." Prescott Courier: Joe Drew drov in from the Walnut creek section yesterday. He says the grass is making a good shewing on Walnut creek. The outlook, for crops, in cluding the calf crop, is exceed ingly - good. Mv. Drew says he drove by S. C. Roger'-? place a ft w days ago and found the old gentle man so sick that he look him home and he is now there and is 'quite feeble. Mr. Drew says the roads between Prescott, and Walnut creek are passable but have some very bad places in them. The other side of the burnt ranch, west of Prescott, Mr. Drtw's teams bogged down and he had to unload his wagon to get out. Another team came along and the horses sank so that only their backs and necks were above, the mud. They had to be dragged out by other teams. Mr. Drew brought to Pres cott with him three lion hides from animals which he killed in the Walnut creek section. One of these hides has been sold to a Chi cago drummer for $40.; An ex ceptionally tine hide of one cat has not been sold and will be hung up in Joe Archambeau's place today. During the recent floods Walnut creek had a salt and tobacco famine, and tobacco users com menced to smoke yerba santa. The direct cob ; i lections by the board not only s made a large amount of work for J an office already jrowded with clerical lalors, but was not so suc cessful as the new plan will be, ac cording to the ideas of those who were instrumental in having the law framed. There are numerous improvements in the new law to make the work of the board less laborious and at the same time will be conducive to better results. The last two years found affairs welt administered under the lead ership of Mr. Sturges, and it was largely due to his efforts that the present law was passed in the shape that it was. The new board is on solid footing, therefore, and the public expects good results to be accomplished. The present members are all practical cattle men, as was the old board, person ally interested in the great work they have in hand. Nogalcs Livery, Feed & Sale Stable. A, L.
