BUILDINGTHEROAD
Construction Work Now Under Way on
the Cananea, Vaqul River A Pacific
Extension.
Construction work on the exten
sion of the Cananea, Yaqui River
& Pacific railroad was commenced
this week, the contract for the first
fifty-three miles of grading having
been let to the contracting firm of
Leslie fc Jennings. Trainloads of
ties for the new road are passing
through Nogales and about eighty
trainloads of rails are already in
the southern country, having pass
ed through here during the past
month.
Practically the building of the
new road, which will eventually be
a through line to the City of Mex
ico, means more to Nogales than
any other town . in this country.
As Agent Bowman, of the South
ern Pacific, says, it will make
.Nogales the El Paso of Arizona.
All the southbound freight and
passenger traffic from the west that
now goes through the Texas town
will pass through Nogales when
the new road is in operation. Nor
will the line city have to await the
completion of the road before the f
benefits' will begin to be felt. Al-j
ready there is noticeable the effects j
of the work commenced, and as ;
fast as a part of the road is built;
connecting any two towns in the;
southern country. jut so much!
more railroad traffic will pass!
through the port of Nogales. j
An important matter yet to be;
j-ettled by the management 01 the
new road is the location of the :
general offices of the company.
According to the concession from
the Mexican government, under
which 'the road is being built, the
offices are to be either at Nogales,
Sonora, or Guaymas, Sonora. The
residents of neither town are
asleep to the advantages to be tie-
rived from the location of the coin-!
pany's offices. j
Here is an opportunity for or-;
ganized effort to bring to Nogales!
a great and lasting benefit. . With j
a. well organized Chamber of Com- j
luerce, including in its membership!
the business men of both the line j
ciiies, all pulling together for the!
location of the railroad offices at j
Nogales, its location here might be!
assured. Tin: Oasis has often in I
the past few months called atten
tion to the many benefits that
might accrue to the town through
a Chamber of Commerce, but there
ii hardly, any instance in which
organized effort would more likely
be prolific of results than in offer
ing the railroad company induce
ments to choose Nogales as its
headquarters.
TUCSON-NOGALES.
Both Teams Practicing for Game to Be
Flayed on Seventeenth.
Advices from Tucson are to the
effect that the Tucson Grays, the
champion base ball team of Ari
zona, are putting in all their spare
time practicing for the game to he
played with their most dangerous
rivals, the Diamond N team of
Nogales.
And the Nogales boys are not
lyiug abed late these fine morn
ings. They know well what they
are going upagainst and are strian
ing every muscle to be in shape
for the game.
Whichever side wins, it will be a
game worth traveling miles to see.

The Tuc?on fans are said to be
doing all they can to bring to
Nogales from the old pueblo a
larger crowd of rooters than accom
panied the Nogales team to Tucson
three weeks ago, and the present
indications are that they will
succeed.
