Chalmers, who was speaker of the House in the Nineteenth Legislative j Assembly of -Arizona, and whose Ieni-j ocracy is unquestioned, in 'which the! gentleman pronounces boldly for! jointure with New Mexico. My own j private correspondence with such sterling Democrats as Doctor Mark j Ilodaers, of Tucson, Hon. A. C. Baker, j of Phoenix, who was Chief Justice of j Arizona under the second Cleveland ad- i ministration, demonstrates that the -sentiment against jointure is not so unanimous in Arizona as has been represented. Judsre liaker has writ ten me a letter in which he says he has recently visited a number of counties and he finds everywhere a strong and growing- sentiment for the proposed jointure : and I have letters to the same effect from many counties in Arizona. In studying this question of statehood for Arizona, including the counties of! New Mexico, I find there is a great deal to be said in favor of aeeeptanee of the! proposition. What the people of Ari-j zona most need is; self government, and j lam prepared to demonstrate at any j time or in any place that they will have j in the proposed union w ith New Mexico ! in statehood, t lie full measure of self-j government, which they do not at all I possess under a territorial form of gov-1 eminent. Audi am further prepared to demonstrate that it would be for the j best interests of Arizona to accept the. i Hamilton bill, frame a state constitu-1 tioi under its provirdons, and .become a ' soverign state m the Cnion. ; Now I would like to discuss these I propositions with you before the people of Arizona, and I would suggest that we j might arrange for a series of joint dis-1 cushions, at some half dozen of the principal places, sav l'rescott, i'hoenix, j Tucson, Pou-idas.
