An Interesting Column of Items Culled
From Territorial Exchanges.
Mesa Free Press: The melon
growers are looking forward to
Saturday of this week with a good
deal of interest for it is on that day
that the contracts of the various
commission firms will be read and
taken under advisement. There
are a number of firms in the field
for next year's crop.
Coconino Sun: Al Doyle, the
old time guide and teamster, re
turned this week from a 1,200 mile
drive north across the desert into
Colorado, Utah and New Mexico
with a party who had been to visit
the snake dance. He came in with
himself and team looking as fresh
as ever, after the little jaunt of
1,200 miles.
Arizona Republican: Sheriff
Francis of Coconino county, re
cently visited Imperial Valley,
where he discovered that 07er 500
head of horses had been driven
from Arizona with all kinds of
brands on them. Many horses
have been missing from Coconino
county the past year, since the
territorial rangers were abolished.
Arizona Democrat: The highest
price ever paid in the valley for a
2-year-old horse, was paid by L.
Russell of North Dakota to A. H.
Davidson of this city for his mare,
Lillian Green. Mr. Davidson re
ceived $750 for the animal. Lillian
Green is a pacer and made a half
mile the other day in 1:06 1-2,
winning the race and going one
quarter in 0:32.
Tombstone Prospector: A new
acetyline gas plant is being instal
led at the court house and within a
few days the system will be in
operation furnishing light to the
various offices and jail. The plant
is of 100 lights capacity and 25
candle-power lights are used for
the light service. A similar plant
is being installed by the county at
the poor farm in Douglas.
Benson Press: Pasty O'Hagan
has dug the last of his sweet pota
toes, watered from flowing wells on
his place four miles south of Ben
son. He had no horse to cultivate
them and had to do all the work
by hand, but the yield was fine and
he made $150 from a little over a
quarter of an acre. Some of the
finest green corn and vegetables
that come to Benson were from his
artesian garden.
Benson Press: Messrs. Loring
and Kline are well satisfied with
experiments in dry farming on the
mesa west of Benson; not by rea
son of profits to their credit, but
because they have demonstrated
that paying crops can certainly be
made, even in the dryest years, on
the great desert mesa, from rain
fall alone, when the ground is
properly tilled, and preparation
made by levees and ditches, to use
flood waters from dashing showers.
Mesa Free Press: We are in
formed that Guy Attaway, who re
cently purchased a portion of the
Toney ranch, now contemplates
engaging in "the ostrich business.
Mr. Attaway has observed that all
the men who have taken up this
industry are traveling toward the
millionaire grade, and he has a
laudable ambition to join them.
Ostriches are now proven to do
better in this, valley, on valley
alfalfa, and produce better plumes,
than the original ostrich on his
native Asiatic and African heaths.
Tombstone Prospector: The Ari
zona Sunday School Association
will hold its annual convention in
conjunction with the Third District
Association in Phoenix November
25th, 26th and 27th. The railroad
companies have extended the
Thanksgiving special reduced rates
so as to cover the dates of the con
vention. Going tickets may be
purchased on the 23rd, 24th and
25th, with a return limit of No
vember 28th.
Tombstone Prospector: It is re
ported that the territorial road
between Bisbee and Douglas is to
be extended from Bisbee to Tomb
stone by way of the divide. This
road is said to be the most feasable
way of getting into Tombstone
from Bisbee. It is expected that
the work of building the Douglas
Bisbee road will be started within
a short time and the construction
of the Bisbee-Tombstone connection
will be started as soon as the road
from Bisbee to Douglas is com
pleted. Florence Blade-Tribune: Mon
day and Tuesday were red-letter
days in the history of this valley.
They marked the beginning of the
end of a twenty-five years struggle
for an adequate irrigation system
here, by bringing together, in an
equitable understanding, the con
flicting interests that held the solu
tion of this water problem in check.
The sky has been cleared and the
star of hope now shines forth in
the heaven of promise 'like a dia
mond lit lantern by angels out
hung." Benson Press: W. F. Fry who
has a place adjoining the famous
sweet potato ranch in St. David
district eight miles south of Benson
harvested seventy sacks of sweet
tubers from one acre of artesian
watered land, and sold them for an
average of 3c per pound, making
returns of two hundred and forty
five dollars from the acre. This is
only one item in the returns from
his truck garden this year, and
though he is a miner, and worked
at it for years in Bisbee, he likes
gardening better and will stick to
that hereafter.
