ACROSS THE BORDER.
A Mirror of Events Transpiring In the
Neighboring Republic.
Guadalajara Times: Reports
from Manzanillo this week state
that James B. Sparks, superin
tendent of the Southern Pacific' of
Mexico in Guadalajara, who left
here ill with scant hopes of re
covery several days ago, is steadilv
improving and will go to Tucson.
Arizona, for an extended stay. Mrs.
8parks is with him and their chil
dren are in this city.
Guadalajara Times: At the
outbreak of th3 insurrection in
Chihuahua a carload of Greenley
potatoes was leaving Juarez for
Torreon and was caught in the
congested railroad yards. It being
the only carload on the road be
tween Chihuahua and Juarez its
progress was easily traced and it
was learned this week that the
whole lot fell into the hands of
Pascual Orozco and his men.
Guadalajara Times: T. Phjlip
Terry of Mexico City, manager of
the Sonora News Company, has
been elected a Fellow of the Royal
Geographical Society of Great
Britain, in recognition of his work
as an author of the now famous
guide-book, "Terry's Mexico," and
his extensive travels. Mr Terry
has encircled the globe seven times,
and hag travelled and sojourned in
eome thirty countries.
Guadalajara Times: Rev. Lau
rence Reynolds, of the M. E. Church
South, has taken charge of the
work of that church in Spanish in
Guadalajara and will conduct
services at the Methodist chapel
on the east side. Manuel Gomez
will be his assistant. Rev. Robert
C. Elliott was reappointed presiding
elder for the western Mexico dis
trict at the recent conference in
Mexico City. Rev, E. Quifiones,
who has been in charge of the east
eide chapel, will go to Coliraa in a
similar capacity It is the inten
tion of the Methodists shortly to
open a mission in the central part
of this city.
El Paso Times: Mexico City,
Feb. 26 Roland G. Garos made
an altitude flight estimated at
3900 feet here today, which, con
sidering the starting altitude of
7800 feet, was regarded as remark
able. President Diaz and his offi
cial family were spectators. Rene
Barrier made a cross country flight
and Rene Simon gave a demon
stration of control. The fourth
flight of the day was by Edmund
Audemars. the Swiss aviator, who
barely succeeded in lifting his tiny
Demoiselle monoplane from the
ground. The rarified air would
not sustain the Utile craft owing to
the lack of lifiing surface.
Mexican Herald: M. Garcia,
an electrician, was badly injured
by a steer Sunday afternoon while
working in the water main, near
the San Lazaro station. The steer
had escaped from a herd that was
being driven to the rastro and
entered the patio of the water
works station at San Lazaro. Here
he ran away from some men work
ing and entered the water main.
Garcia, who was putting some
lamps in pbice in the tunnel, could
not escape fmm the animal and
was badly gored, rm-iving a seri
ous wound in tlie left thigh and a
dislocation of one arm. Continu
ing along the tunnel, tho bull gave
chase to Francisco Mendoza, Perez
Gonzalez and Perez Bofde. These
j men were able to escape 1 from the
animal. Bolde securing a horse
gave chase to the animal which
had entered a part of the cement
tube which has not been covered.
Bolde lassoed the animal and
threw it. Later, in trying to get it
out of the ditch, the bull was
strangled to death.
El Paso Times: The Mexican
gunboat Tampico, which ran on a
sand bar outside of Topolobampo on
the 9th inst., steamed into that har
bor last Friday morning seemingly
none the worse for her experience.
She was escorted by her rescuer,
thegunboat Guerrero. The Guerrero
; was ordered there on the tenth to
extricate the Tampico but unfav
orable winds made the task im pos
sible until yesterday. She will
I leave for Mazatlan in a day or
I two, presumably to perform the
j task originally assigned the Tam-
pico, that of quieting the fears
which that city lias expressed of
an attack by revolutionists. It is
not known how lng the Tampico
will remain in Topolobampo.
Friday Iat "El Pais" a daily
newspaper in the City of Mexico,
published a telegram from Chihua
hua to the effect that a report was
current in that city last night that
Pascual Orosco, whose fiasco be
fore Juarez was said to have cost
him his post as chief of the rebel
forces at the hands of Madero and
the junta, is anxious to make peace
with authorities at Chihuahua.
Under a flag of truce and at the
head of a large band of insurrectos,
Orozco was said to be proceeding
to Chihuahua for a parley with
Governor Ahumada. A messenger
was alleged to have preceded him
with an offer on the part of himself
and his men to lay down their
arms if the men would be permit
ted to go free. He alone would
bear the blame and suffer the pun
ishment due on account of their
rebellion. Orozco'a decision was
said to have followed a meeting of
the chiefs of the revolutionary forces
wherein Blanco was the only dis
senter to the plan of surrender.
Blanco was off for Sonora with his
men, according to the tale.
