L. Ambrose, on a churgw of killiug
Charles W. Davis, at I'oaoh Springs, on
December 26th, 1SS0, closed at Kiug
maii ca Thursday, resulting in a ver
dict of not guilty. Tho cvidouoo hhow
cd that pro3 dispatches of that dato
wero false and did injustice lo Ambrose.
That ho was assaulted that morning by
Davis without cause, and Davis being
whipped made numerous threats to kill
AmbroeO beforo night. Ambrose tried
to avoid a difllculty, and attempted to
leavo town, but was prevented by
Agent R. A. Bailey, who threatunod to
report any conductor that would carry
him out. That evening while Ambrose
was en duty at the telegraph key,
Davis enleied in a violent manner and
assaulted Ambrose with a weapon,
bruising him seriously abunt the chin
and mouth, saying ho had coma U do
him up, and while Davis had hiiuby the
throat, with his head thrust through a
window-pane, tuo fatal shot was fired.
The popular feeling lias been with
Ambrose, and people generally arc re
joiced over tho verdict, Ambrose was
defended by JB. M. Saafsrd of this
Anothor Veteran Gone.
Although fajor 0. . Dake had bean
confined to his room far nearly a year
and a half, tho community was con
siderably surprised yesterday afternoon,
to learn that he had died, as it was not
generally known that his condition had
changed for the worse.
Early in the war of tho rebellion,
G. P, Dako raised a company at his
homo iu Michigan, and was afterwards
promoted to be major of the regiment
t which it was assigned, and he made
a record as a bravo soldier. It was du
ring an engagement that he received a
wsund which never healed, and which
after all these years was the cause of
Coming to Arizona, he was appoint
ed United States marshal for the terri
tory, at a time, ,too, when it required
tact and nerve to fill tho position, but
tho duties of which wero discharged by
him iu a manner to reflect credit.
Since retiring from this ofiice, he has
beca engaged in business pursuits
until over i year ago, when he was
compelled to re tiro on account of sick
ness and bos ever since been confined
tv tho house.
The funeral took place this afternoon
at 3 o'clock frora the family residence
oa Marina Etreet, and the reeiaius wero
followed to their last resting placo by a
large concourse of Borrowing friends
and citiiens of Preecott.
Ifore towns die for want of confi
dence cn tho part of business men and
ack of public spirit than from any other
cause. When a man is in search of a
home, cr business location, goes into a
towa and finds everything brim full of
hope and enthusiasm, ever tho pros
pects of the place, and all earnestly
building it up, ho-saoon becomes im
bued with tho same epirit, and as a re
suit ho drives down his stakes and goee
to work with the 6amo interest. When.
however, he goes to a towa where any
one expresses doubt and appcohtmsiou
movias about and indulging in mourn
iul complaints, he naturally feels it is
no place for him, aad at once shakes
tho dust off his feet, while he pulls out
with All possible speed for some other
place. Consequently, try and make an
enterprising town out of one iu which
you live. Whca you ar working for
your own town you aro accomplishing
all the mare for yourself. Las Vegas
