Philip Yaeger’s Barber Shop FIRST CLASS WORK ONLY RESIST LEASE TERMINATION Little Rock, Dec. 30.—Special. —Attorneys for the Arkansas Brick and Manufacturing Co., which has held a ten-year lease upon th i state convicts, expiring tomorrow night, today notified the peniten tiary board that they would resist any effort upon the part of the state to terminate the contract Jan uary 1. They claim that the state should have furnished them 300 convicts every day during the life of the lease, which, according to their figures, would leave them en titled to work 500 convicts every day for two more years. Attorney General Kirby holds that the state is required to fur nish only 100 men, but has the right to increase the number to 300. The brick company threatens to sue the membersof thepenitentiary board aud their bondsmen for $100 000, the amount they allege they would be damaged, if an attempt Is made to recall the convicts. WILL RETIRE FROM OFFICE Retiring Auditor Moore will “Make Share Crop with Hie Wife.” “I am going to make a share crop with my wife,” said Dr. A. E. Moore, the retiring state auditor, before leaving for Little Rock to complete his term of office, which will expire about January .18. Dr. Moore, who has been spending the holidays with his family at Enders, said he would not occupy a position under his successor, John R. Jobe, who is at present deputy auditor. Mr. Jobe has an nounced that Col. J. C. Colquitt, the present insurance clerk, will be his deputy, and Karl W. Hodges will continue as printing clerk. It was thought that Mr. Jobe would retain Dr. Moore in the office if possible, but the latter has decided to retire to his farm in the northern part of this county. With a total approximating $175,000, the amount expended in building and construction in Con way during the year just ending was more than double that of any previous year in the history of the town. About half of this sum is of course accounted for by the State Normal and new public school buildings, but, on the other hand, the panic in the early part of the year was responsible for a consid erable reduction in building opera tions. From several contractors and mill men an estimate has been se cured by The Log Cabin Democrat of the amount expended in build ings completed aud under con struction during 1908. The list is by no means complete and the figures, while perhaps too high in some cases and too low in others, are believed to be an approximately correct estimate of the cost of the buildings. The list may be divided about as follows; State Normal and public school, $yo,ooo; business houses, $44,000; residences, $27,000; mis cellaneous improvements, $10,000; concrete sidewalks, $5,000; total, $176,000. GODBEY BREAKS CHAIN Defies threat of Disaster from “Chain Letter.” Professor in Hendrix College Characterizes Ghain Lettsr as “Veriest Voodooism” Dr. J. E. Godbey, professor of philosophy in Hendrix College, and one of the best known Metho dist ministers in the state, received yesterday a “chain prayer letter,” and, unmindful of the threat of disaster contained in it, will not carry on the chain, which he characterizes as the “veriest voo dooism. The letter received by Dr. Godbey was unsigned, and was as follows: “i2-i8-'o8. I am sending you a prayer please follow instructions. Oh Dear Lord Jesus We implore do have mercy ou all mankind. Keep us from all sin by Thy precious blood, and take us to dwell with JThee in Etirnity (Amen. This was sent out by Bishop Laurence commanding this to be sent out to nine persons, they who will not send this prayer will be afflicted by a great mis fortune. One person who paid no attention to it met with a terrible accident. He who will send this out to nine persons, commencing today, and one each day for nine days will on the ninth day ex perience a great joy. ,‘This was sent to me exactly as I am writing it to you. “Do not break the chain. “A-tnenn. ” In reply to the letter Dr. Godbey writes to the Log Cabin Democrat: “I cannot comply with the re quest of this letter. “First, because as a request it has no meaning. The prayer proposed is in general terms for the salvation of all men with our selves. All Christians who pray at all, daily pray for these things; therefore, the request is meaning less. I cannot be a party to this sham. “Second, the threat of some fearful judgment upon anyone who breaks this chain is a blasphemous presumption on the part of the author of this scheme. It is the veriest voodooism. I cannot be come an agent for a voodooist. “Third, the promise of rewards and threats of penalties here pre sented misrepresents the principles of God’s government, taught in the Bible; misrepresents God and his cause. I cannot become an agent thus to degrade and misrepresent true religion. “Fourth, the statement accom panying it and which I am to copy and send as I receive it, is a lie. Bishop Lawrence is successor of Phillips Brooks, Episcopal bishop of New York. He denies having any connection with this silly and sinful fraud, and I notify all whom it may concern that to circulate it is to circulate not only a lie, but a slander on a good man. “I have been familiar with this trick fora good while and have discovered that it works not with intelligent Christians who know that the Lord and his cause are not represented in it. The silly ones who fear to break the chain are folks who have not enough acquaintance with the Lord to lake any risks in the matter. “I break this chain, and if any friend fears for my fate let him know that more than two years ago I broke this chain and denounced this fraud. We pity the poor souls that can be scared by this bugaboo. A negro when asked if he was afraid of ghosts said, “No, massa, I'se seen too many of ’em.” “The letter bearing this request '"--1 GARY OWEN THE MONARCH OF 5-CENT CIGARS White Drug Company was mailed at Malvern, Ark. It must have been sent as a joke. I should be sorry to believe that any one over whom I have any in fluence should be fool enough to send it in sincerety. The editor of The Log Cabin Democrat is re quested to send this answer to the Malvern papers.” Wedding Last Night. Judson Goad and Miss Ruby Nelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. P. Nelson, were married last night at the Methodist parsonage, Rev. J. B. Stevenson pronouncing the ceremony. Sells Moving Picture Show. W. N.
