Although not personally acquainted with Mrs. Knight, we have often heard of her as a very estimable lady, a devoted wife, and kind mother. |3|r’Notwithstanding the herculean ef forts of the opposition, the circulation of all manner of false and foolish reports, and the universal assertion among the Cops., that Maj. Geo. 11. Otis would hardly get a majority in Dodgevillc, he received 380 of 523 votes, a majority of 249, and actually ran ahead of his ticket twenty votes. society of Good Templars in our village is reported in a very flourishing condition. Seventeen persons were initia ted at the last regular meeting, and others are now in waiting. The socictj” lias been established in this place about eight years and has been productive of much good. Let the good work go bravely on. KgrJ. V. Rogers announces by adver tisement which will be found in this issue, that he has lately received additions to his stock of groceries and provisions. As friend Rogers deals exclusively in family groceries and provisions, he may naturally be expected to have a better assortment than the generality of stores. Randall, in an article on the late elections, makes the following true and significant remark which we respectfully commend to our Democratic friends in this county : The Democratic party, as such, has dug its and we advise its leaders to hur} r the remains forever, and start anew with legitimate material. JcgT’The oyster supper given on Thurs day evening last by the Orphan’s Aid So ciety, of this village was quite a success, and although it was not patronized as ex tensively as suppers in this place usually arc, enough were in attendance to make quite a substantial addition to the funds of the society. The oysters were excellent and as they were the first of the season, in this part, they were highly relished by those in attendance. The receipts of the evening were $72,75. Improvements. —We are happy to be able to state that there has been more im provements made in our village during the last summer and fall than has been made in any five years previous, since Dodge ville has been in existence. Between six and seven thousand dollars have been spent in building sidewalks and improving and grading the streets alone. Quite a number of good buildings have been erected— stores and dwelling houses—fences have been built, houses painted, and an im mense amount of work and money expend ed in improving and beautifying our nat urally handsome village. JSp’We are requested to announce that the eminent Rev. Samuel Roberts, late of Lanbryn, Mair, wjll preach in the Con gregational church in the village of Arena, on Thursday evening, Nov. 15th. At Ridgeway at 2 o'clock on Saturday after noon, Nov. 17th. He will preach in W elsh at the Welsh church near Davis’Mill at 10 o'clock or. Sabbath morning tbe 18th inst. Be will also preach in English at the Division street Congregational church in Dodgeville, at 2 o’clock, and in Welsh at 7 o'clock I'm the evening of the same day. Mr. Roberts is a very eminent minister, and the mention of his name is all that is accessary to secure a good audience. DODGEYILLE, VIS., THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 15, 1866. lowa County Bonds. Elsewhere in this issue will be found a call issued by the County Board of Super visors, which is now in session, addressed tc the chairmen of the various town boards in the County, imviting the town boards together with other influential business men, to meet them at Dodgevillc, on Tucs dajq November 27th, for the purpose ot consulting on the County Bonds. The County Boards. have fought these Bonds for nearly ten years, suits have been carried to the highest Courts in the United States, and they have decided that the Bonds are valid and must be paid.— Mandamuses and other legal papers have been served on the Board, requiring them to obey the demands of the Courts and levy a tax to pay these Bonds; these de mands have up to this time been disobey ed, but the people cun not expect to always stave off these Bonds, and the time is rap idly approaching when they must be prid. Various plans have been proposed, some of which are thought to be quiet practicable by which these Bonds may be paid. The object of this proposed is there fore to adopt the best plan whereby the indebtedness of the County may be liqui dated, and by which the whole County may be benefitted, and the people suffer as little as possible. This is a matter in which every tax payer is deeply interested, and should not now be neglected. As the citizens of Dodgevillc will keep open house during that and the following day, the bills being paid by voluntary sub scription, we hope to see every part of the Coiyity fully and ably represented. The vote cast at this election being the largest for a number of years, may be set down as the best expression of the sentiment of the people of the County which it is possible to get. gggpThe Salt Lake Vedette of tho Sd has the following in pencil on its margin: “Things begin to look bilious; a squad of soldiers are now guarding our office. 7 ' — This is signed by Goldrick. The Mermens arc committing all sorts of outrages on the Gentiles in every direction, rioting at their own sweet wills. A few days ago they caught the heavy editor of the Vedette and made him promise to leave town within a specified time. He says they forced him to give the promise, and that therefore he shall not keep it. He says further on tho subject: “When a crowd of ten or twelve armed men glide from an alley at the dead hour of midnight, and crawling up behind seize us, we do not stand accountable for what is done, but if any of the cowardly dogs who assaulted us last Monday night wish an}' satisfaction for what has appeared in the Ved-etie they can obtain it by meeting us singly by day light at any time, place, or in any manner that suits them.” Lucky boys—those Vedette editors, they Lave fun, souieiluug to stir the bloou.
