Incorporated The Handy Doctor in Your Vest Pocket ’"tTS a thin, round-cornered little Enamel Box— When carried in your vest pocket <-1 it means Health-Insurance. It contains Six Candy Tablets of pleasant taste, almost as pleasant as Chocolate. Each tablet is a working dose of Cas carets, which acts like Exercise on the Bowels and Liver. It will not purge, sicken, nor upset the Stomach. Because it is not a “Bile-driver,” like Salts, Sodium, Calomel, Jalap, Senna, nor Aperient Waters. Neither is it like Castor Oil, Glycerine, or ether Oily Laxatives that simply lubricate the Intestines for transit of the food stopped up in them at that particular time. The chief cause of Constipation and Indigestion is a weakness of the Muscles that contract the Intestines and Bowels. Cascarets are practically to the Bowel Muscles what a Massage and Cold Bath axe to the Athletic Muscles. They stimulate the Bowel Muscles to contract, expand, and squeeze the Diges tive Juices out of food eaten. They don’t help the Bowels and Liver in Buch a way a$ to make them lean upon similar assistance for the future. This is why, with Cascarets, the dose may be lessened each succeeding time instead of increased, as it must be with all ether Cathartics and Laxatives. Cascarets act like exercise. If carried in your vest pocket, (or carried In My Lady’s Purse,) and eaten just when you suspect you need one, you will never know a sick day from the ordinary Ills of life. Because these Ills begin in the Bowels, and pave the way for all other diseases. “Vest Pocket” box 10 Cents. 737 Be sure you get the genuine, made only by the Sterling Remedy Company, and never fold in bulk. Capital punishment is still practised in many countries, though of late years, especially in the United States, it has been made as humane as possible. That creation of the French Revolution, the guillotine, is still used by some coun tries, and the old executioner’s ax deals out justice in Brunswick. The most humane method of execu tion, the electric chair, is used only in the United States. Spain employs the garrote, or iron collar, which is tightened until the victim strangles to death; and in Prussia the heads of prisoners are struck off with the sword. The guillotine is used in Bavaria and Belgium; and Russia destroys her criminals by shooting, hanging, and with the executioner’s sword. The gal lows is the official means of administer ing death in Great Britain; Austria has adopted the same means; but Chi nese criminals are killed by the sword. es, BUT PERFECTLY WELL. The sphinx sneezed with great violence, and her nose dropped off. Petrified with astonishment, she re mained rooted to the spot. Then why pause with indecision, When bright angels in thy vision Beckon thee to fields Elysian? Seest thou shadows sailing by, As the dove, with startled eye, Sees the falcon’s shadow fly? Hear’st thou voices on the shore, That our ears perceive no more, Deafened by the cataract’s roar? O thou child of many prayers! Bear a lily in thy hand; Gates of brass cannot withstand One touch of that magic wand. Bear through sorrow, wrong and ruth, In thy heart the dew of youth, On thy lips the smile of truth. Oh, that dew, like balm, shall steal Into the wounds that cannot heal, Even as sleep our eyes doth seal; And that smile, like sunshine, dart Into many a sunless heart, For a smile of God thou art. —Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. THEIR MARRIED NAMES. Homespun Parents Could Not Mas ter Foreign Pronunciation. International marriages are, in these days of travel, more common than they used to be; but they were not unknown to our ancestors of a century ago, and were least rare, It seems, In some of the old seafaring families. Old-time sea captains made friends in many lands, and were occasionally accompan ied on board ship by some adventurous daughter, eager, like Lord Bateman of the ballad, “far countries for to see.” One such, who traveled as far as Rus sia, did not return; she remained there as the wife of a prosperous Russian merchant. Her father's fellow’ townsmen were naturally Interested to hear all about the match on his return, but there was one important piece of information they never obtained —the bride's mar ried name. It was so unpronounceable that the good captain declined even to attempt It. He always spoke of his daughter as “my gal who married a furriner;” his mother called her my “my grand darter over in Rooshy,” and everybody else soon fell into the way of saying simply—and not at all jocularly— “ Maria Thingumajig.” Another old sea captain had two charming girls who accompanied him to France, both of whom married French men. French is a less difficult tongue than Russian, but the old man’s ear was not good, and the two brides, on their first visit home, were somewhat chagrined at the havoc he made with their names. They had become Madame Carette and Madame Le Boutilller; but he in troduced them cheerfully to strangers as Mrs. Lee Bottles and Mrs. Carrots. They gently remonstrated against such a perversion of their names, but in vain; be could achieve nothing better until a compromise was reached, In ac cordance w’lth which he ceased to try to pronounce them at all. Thereafter, when an lntr<duction be came necessary, he presented “My dar ter, Mrs. Nancy 8.,” or “My darter, Mrs. Polly C.,” adding, genially, “and if ye want the full of her name In French, she'll tell ye on askin’. She speaks the language.” —Youth’s Com panion The Bore Retorts. Midnight came and still the bore re mained. “Do you like music?” asked the beau tiful girl just to break the monotony. “Passionately fond of It.” replied tte bore. “In fact, music will alw’ays car ry me away.' She rushed over to the piano and played several popular airs. “You are atill here,” she said, turn ing on the stool. “Yes,” yawned the bore. "But I thought you said music al ways carried you away?” "So I did —music!” We have noticed that the people who talk a great deal about a “secret sorrow” are pretty apt to give the se cret away, if encouraged. So many people consider a wish ar ambition. -: iwi giLii .'1 i.. .".i 1 ...,, Mi Irn th 111,,., n ,1 1 1 „,",,,, 1 i ALCOHOL 3 PER CENT. 1 AVegclable PreparalionforAs similallng thelbodandßegtila ling (lie Stomachs andßowels of Infants ytHiibrfiK Promotes Digestion.Cheerliil ness and Rest. It is said that there have been only two thefts in one thousand years. One of these was that of a native who -was detected stealing sheep; but as he had done so to supply his family, who were suffering for want of food, he was not punished, the shame at tached to his condition being deemed sufficient degradation. The other was by a German who stole seventeen sheep, and as he was in comfortable circumstances he was sentenced to sell all of his property, restore the value of what he had stolen, and leave the country or be exe cuted. He left. There are courts of justice; but it is not an inviting field of operations for lawyers. ECZEMA COVERED BABY. Worst Case Doctors Ever Saw—Suf fered Untold Misery—Perfect Cure by Cutlcura Remedies. “My son, who is now twenty-two years of age, when four months old began to have eczema on his face, spreading quite rapidly until he was nearly covered. The eczema was some thing terrible, and the doctors said it was the worst case they ever saw. At times his whole body and face were covered, all but his feet. I used many kinds of patent medicines, to no avail. A friend teased me to try Cutlcura. At last I decided to try Cutlcura when my boy was three years and four months old, having had eczema all that time and suffering untold misery. I began to use all three of the Cutlcura Remedies.
