The | resi d<-nt and congn-s- it i* claimed, can rnle -nitride of tk • states that compose tin- Union, without regard to the limitations of the Constitution. If the American people indorse this claim by the re-elec tion of Mr. McKinley, they " ill mani fest indifference or disloyalty to the hitherto acknowledged principles of their own government. That they should fe evpeeted to do thi*. amt to abandon the ideals of the republic is disheartening to the friends of liberty everywhere, and encouraging only to those, at home and abroad who hate and fear democracy- For this reason also the re-election of Mr. McKinley ought to Is- prevented. In view of these considerations, it is comparatively of little importance how s ibordinate questions are met. Errors in currency legislation, if made, can be , corrected - and. if inconvenience or dis-, tress come from such errors, these can be endured: if only honor and liberty are saved. Tli*' only way by which Mr. McKin ley - re-election can be prevented, and the country saved froii the disgrace id' Isdraying its allies un i of repndii tinx its ideals of lilterty and justice, is by the election of Mr. Bryan, with whatever risks that election involves No one has the right to question Mr Bryan's sincer ity when he declares that if elected, he will immediately convene c 'tigress. and i will urge upon tl a‘ body to proclaim to the world that the United States will as ure to the Philippine islanders the same independence that has been promised to the Unbans and there is no reason to suppose that, when the will of the Amer ican people has been expressed by the j defeat of Mr. McKinley, congress will j disregard it Not to support Mr Bryan is to throw away the only chance that remains to call a halt in the policy, which is now j endangering t ic good name of the conn-! try. and the perpetuity of >ts form of \ government. The arguments that are being ad dressed to the people by the Republican leaders are appeals to the lowest and most sordid motives. They never speak i of American liberty, hut they snvLook at onr prosperity.' They do not sjieak | of justice to the Filipinos, but they tell i us that we must hold the islands to pro tect and extend onr trade; and there are among them professed ministers of the | gospel who justify the killing and liar row ing of Ihe Filipinos, hy saying that we are but fnltiling the ultimate purpose of the Almighty, by disobeying his po-i tive commands. There is nothing in the catalogue of crimes that cannot be justified by siieh reasoning as this.
