STATE NEWS. Mre. Anna Beck, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Uihlein of Milwaukee died unexpectedly at the Pi lyclinic hospital in Chicago shortly after (> o'clock last Friday. Mrs. Beck was one of the victims of the explosion that wrecked the Chicago powerhouse of the Northwestern railway on the evening of Decemoer 2 and shattered the parlor car of the Milwaukee train that was just leaving the station. On Wednesday November 14, Anna Uihlein was married to August C. Beck, and one month ago the happy couple departed fur a wedd.ng journey through the South and East. They were about to leave Chicago on the return from the honeymoon jour ney the afternoon of the accident, and were seated in the train when the ex plosion occurred. The sadden death of Mrs. Beck was a great shock to friends and relatives. The only son of the Bey. Andrew Por ter, presiding elder of the Methodist church. Oshkosh ran away from home a week ago. The cause is unknown. The lad is 13 years old. Mr. Porter says that he has heard from his son, but re fuses to state when or whence. Anna Reichert, of La Crosse who lias been in the hospital four weeks on ac count of injuries alleged to have been received from trainmen on the Milwau kee road, is preparing to bring suit for $40,000 damages. She claims her fare was paid from Milwaukeee to La Crosse but the conductor gave her a station slip only to Columbus then ’-.sod violence in trying to put her off there. She was brought through to La Crosse and at once went to the hospital. In the preliminaries for the freshman declamation contest at Madison, held in Athena hall Saturday afternoon, the five winning contestants were members of the Athena Literary society. The suc cesssnl contestants are F. L. Randolph, Madison; L. Ludlow, Waukesha: L. D. Blackman. Ames. la.; G. S. Wooledge. Antigo and F. Arnold of Eau Claire. H. A. Smyth was elected manager oi University Cooperative association at a meeting of the Board of Directors at \. M. C. A. house. He succeeds T. S. Morris, resigned, and takes up his du ties at once. Mr. Smyth has been first assistant to Mr Morris for several years and is fully competent to take charge ol the large business of the association. Levi Hale, supervisor of the town of Crivitz while out hunting with twi other men, managed to bag four bears They felled an old tree and three cubs and the mother emerged. One cub was killed by a blow from an axe. The oth er two were captured and the old beat wa. killed after four shots had been fir ed into her. An active campaign on this topic will be organized and it is hoped carried to a successful issue. Fire Sunday morning destroyed the large tannery of Zzchetzsche & Sons. Sheboygan, entailing a loss of SIBO,OOO. The institute of the state normal teach ers was held at the Normal school in Oshkosh and 172 responded to roll call. This is the first meeting of its kind to be held in the W est and the State Board of Regents of this state makes attend ance of teachers compulsory. The meeting was called to order by State Supt. Harvey, who delivered an address of welcome. Two sessions a day— morning and afternoon are held and the institute will continue through the week. I. Q. Emery of the Albion Normal school opened the work with a paper on the conditions which influenced the Boirdof Regents to call the institute.
