VOLUME XLIIL-NO. 8. THANKSGIVING IN MANITOWOC. Where Religious Services Will be Held Here. THOSE WHO ARE PREACHING. In ilie Afternoon There Will be a Foot ball Game. BETWEEN MANITOWOC AND MILWAUKEE. A Ball Eor Charily Has Been Scheduled For The Evening at The Opera House. Thanksgiving Day will be appropriate ly opened from a religious view point by a union service, to be held at the Methodist Episcopal church, in the the morning at 10 o’clock, the congre gations of the Methodist Episcopal and Presbyterian churches taking part in it, the Rev. D. C. Jones, of the Presbyter ian church, preaching the sermon. Special Thanksgiving music will be ren dered by the combined choirs of both churches; after service a social gather ing and interchange of felicitations will bv in order. To mark the day as one of praise a special high mass will be sung at 8 o’clock in the morning at St. Boniface's church, the Rev. Father Piel being the celebrant. To adhere to his wonted cus tom the Rev. Mr. Gray will celebrate the holy encharist at 10 o’clock in the morning, which will be choral. Prior to the creed he will preach a sermon appropriate to the day. At the Nor wegian Lutheran church, a service will be held at 7.30 o’clok in the evening, when the Rev. P. E. Thorsen will preach a sermon on the meaning of the day. Thanksgiving services will be held at the German churches and at the Polish Catholic church. In the afternoon of Thanksgiving day a football game will lie played between the Northside high school team and the Milwaukee high school boys. In the evening a Charity ball takes place at the Opera house. TO MARK FIFTY YEARS OF WEDDED LIFE THE FAMILY REUNITED. To mark the felicity of fifty years of wedded life many friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arne Auberg in Eaton on Saturday- Gathered at the hospital home of the aged were children and grandchildren and three score and ten guests, each bringing the happy and aged couple heartfelt good wishes. The day was one of great pleasure to all who participated. The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Aubery took place in Norway Nov. 23, 1851. Deaths of a Week. After hovering for weeks in the bord t *laud between life and death Mrs. Ve ronica Kodet died Tuesday night, her death occurring at the home of her son, John Kodet of Rapids. She had attain ed the advance age of 89 years and had been failing long. J* Kt. ADVENT SUNDAY BEGINS A SHORT'PERiOD OF SOMBERNESS Next Sunday the advent season in the churches begins. This is known as the commencement of the ecclesiastical year and always preceeds the Christ mas holidays. It bears the same re lationship to Christmas that lent does to Easter In the churches where ritual is used the glitter which usnalty sur rounds the sanctuary will have been succeeded by purple and somberness will be the order for the nest six weeks. THREE MEN ARE SPOKEN OF FOR COUNTY SUPERVISOR J. P. Watt, Joseph Krizenesky and Joseph Miller of Maple grove are candi dates for the office of supervisor, to fill the place vacated by W. C. Maertz. There will be no special election, how ever, to fill out the unexpired term. The candidates now in the field are looking for the place at the next spring election. SUPPER AND SALE TO BE HELD AT METHODIST CHURCH. A supper, with or without oysters, and sale will be held in the parlors of the St. Paul's M. E. church, Tuesday December 3, from sto 8 o’clock. ACCEPT THE FRANCHISE FOR STREET RAILWAY IN KEWAUNEE The franchise granted by the city of Kewaunee has been accepted and noti fication of acceptance tilled at Kewau nee by the Manitowoc & Northern Traction company. Northside Again Defeated The foot ball team attached to the third ward school of Appleton came to this city last Saturday and trounced the Northside team on the gr idiron by a sc ore 17 to 0. The County Board of Assessors closed its annual fall meeting yesterday after being in session for twenty days, and | all the supervisors have gone home, hav | ing done their work faithfully and well. The Assess ment committee went on the assump inn of making a raise in each town of #ISOOO, but this plan didn’t work. Meeme, for instance, was only raised #B,OOO and Centerville the same, so was Franklin, while Liberty suffered a raise of #20,000 and Kiel #23,000. All the towns have .een raised. It is a cause of great satisfaction to the people generally that the announce ment is made that Henry Hinrichs is rapidly on the road of recoverv. His illness, which, last Fridav and Satur day forbode serious consequence to him self and the community, has passed the critical stage, and if uo lelapse occurs he will convaleic'ag in a very short time. Mr. Hinrichs brothers, one from St. Paul amf the other from Milwaukee came here tube on hand if the worse had come. The family receivi and many mes sages of sympathy from various parts of the state. Oscar Torrison, of Chicago, was in town. C. F. Sweeting went to Madison on Tuesday. Joseph Vilas Jr. who has been in the city for some days has left for Kau kauna. M, H. Murphy returned from Chicago last night. Edward Thompson is home to spend Thanksgiving. Walter Green was in Fond du Lac. Henry Richards took a Hying trip to Milwaukee. Henry Vits was in Milwaukee yester kay. MINSTREL SHOW WAS A SUCCESS LAST FRIDAY NIGHT. The minstrel show given by the South side Ladies Aid societ> last Friday was a great success from a financial point of view, tin* ladies netting about #lsofrom the proceeds of the sale tickets, after all the expenses had been paid. While the programme was good and the various numbers well rendered, the preformance was altogether too long drawn out. Election Has Caused Some little Fric tion. THOSE WHO SOUGHT THIS POSITION. 1 The New Chairman Was The Last in The Field hut he Got the Poll. Owing to the fact that W. C. Mae tz, the supervisor from Maple Grove, resign ing his position as supervisor a vacancy in the County board chairmanship oc curred. To till this office until next spring Ex-Sheriff Henry Lehrmann was elected. The election to this office has not been accomplished without a little fric tion. It had been generally supposed that Joseph W. Finch had the best chances of reaching the chairmanship and he had been an avowed candidate from the time of the announcement l of Mr. Maertz's candidacy for the office of supervising assessor. When the board mot, however, other supervisors had ambitions fur the office and early in the session the name of Louis P. Grimm was announced, also the names of David W. Sheldon and \V • J. Guetzloe. At this time Henry Lehr mann was north ou a hunting expedi tion. When Mr. Lehrmann returned, however, he courted the office, threw out his lines and captured the prize. Someone had spoken of I*. J Conway as a candidate, but Mr. Conway was not a candidate. He gave assurances early in the session that at this time he could not consent to allow his name to go before the board, although someone did cast a vote for him. Four hunters returned from the north yesterday in the persons of Jule LinJ stedt, Chas. Spindler and Louis Knnz and Wm. Richards. Kwh man brought home two deer. Lindstedt claims he begged his game after four days hard searcaing and nearly killed a herd of cattle before he got the deer; Louis Knnz makes no claims, but Charles Spindles says it is very much easier to buy deer than shoot them. Richards won first prize. COUNTY PERSONS WHO WERE SEEN IN THE CITY THIS WEEK. Chas. Feller, of Kasson, was in the city on Monday. Dr. Cnrrens, of Two Rivers, was in the city on Tuesday. W. J. Wreith, of Two Rivers was in Manitowoc on Tuesday. Otto Zander, of Brillion, was in the city on Monday. Joseph Koenig, of Two Rivers, prose cuted business in Manitowoc on Satur day John Schriehart. of Brillion, had busi ness in the city on Monday. George Lecker. of Brillion, was in Manitowoc on Monday. J. E. Hamiltan was in the city yester day. Chas. Vondrachek, of Reedsville, was in the city on Wednesday. CHAS KRIESER KILLS HIMSELF. WITH CARBOLIC ACID. Chas. Krieser for some time foreman of the Manitowoc Malting company's plant committed suicide last Friday evening by taking a large dose of car bolic acid. Just what caused Mr. Kries er to commit the insane act is not known. He was in comfortable cir cumstances, having steady occupation and good wages. He was apparently in the best of spirits when lie retumel from work to his home on Friday. He paid his wife, who is on invalid, a visit, and then sent his young daughter out to purchase the poison. On receiv ing the deadly drug he gulped it down, and sank into a chair, dying in a few moments. He was buried on Saturday afternoon. Maertz, who has long filled tbo office of chairman of the the Comity Board of Supervisor.' has again been honored by an election to the office of county supervising assessor, which car ries an emolument of a day for nine ty days of each yen r. The office is a neW one and was created by an act of the last legislature. The question of election was settled on Tuesday, when Mr. Maertz received i majority of the votes of the members of the board on the informal ballot, only four votes be ing cast against him, three of them go ing to A. H. Zander. <)n the motion of ('has Groffman the informal ballot was declared formal and Mr. Maertz was de clared formal and Mr. Maertz w is duly I elected. After the announcement of hi lec tion the new supervising assessor t oik ed the members of the board for 100 I cordial support which had been g. o u him, saving that he would fulfill the do tics of his new office with an eye sincis jto the county's interest. He meant to be impartial, so that rich and poor should tie treated alike, and that no fa voritism should be shown. The election of Mr. Maertz was con ceded from the moment in* entered the raoe. Many other names had been sug gested for the office but they all with drew. and consequently only Mr Maertz and Mr. Zander were voted for. One stray vote was. however, registered for W. J. Guetsloe, of Kiel, but this was rather in the nature of a joke. Paid Dog Tax Gustavo Pautz was in Municipal court Tuesday afternoon to explain his refusal to pay the city dog tax and willingly produced the necessary $3 together with the costs of th< prose cution and was allowed to go.
